It's not that complicated, and it's always been a thing:

RH D on the right side can clear pucks and make outlet passes from their D zone on their forehand, as opposed to their backhand.  Same for holding pucks in along the wall in the O zone.  Same applies to LH'ers on the left side.

You can play off-hand, but it is more difficult.

F's used to always play on their strong side, way back in the day.  Russian and Swedish players decades ago shifted that to a degree, and it was intentional.  Those hockey schools of thought argued that having a winger on his offside allowed players to position pucks on their sticks more into center ice, giving them better shooting angles.  What you sacrificed as a LW coming down the right side in forehand puck protection, you gained in being able to get the puck on your forehand in a much better shooting position, in terms of angle of attack.  It's why you see most PP point guys - if there are two guys on the point - switch sides and play on their offhand sides.  Better shooting angle for your forehand.

I can certainly see how the marginal defenseman benefits playing on the correct side, but it should not matter in selecting someone projected as a top pairing d-man.  I could not tell you whether Niedermayer, Pronger, Bourque, Coffey, Stevens, etc. were right handed or left.  I imagine it did not matter to them when it counted

Ya I know he said he wants RH this summer, but not sure if that applies to the draft. Unless he thinks that Levshunov can make the team.

I’ve been watching hockey for the better part of 50 years.   This whole RH /LH defensemen seems only to have a been a thing for the last couple.    Take the best player.  I don’t care if he’s RH LH or ambidextrous

  3. No doubt the defenseman position has evolved, but physicality is still required.   Puck possession is meaningless if you don’t separate your opponent from the puck first.   This is how you end up with Cam Fowler as your top d-man.  I guarantee that Verbeek wants the team to be more difficult to play against.

You are alone in that assessment:

    Artyom Levshunov's Player Profile

Rachel Doerrie - ESPN - April 2nd: "He has developed at light speed, leading scouts to believe that he could be an impactful two-way defenseman at the NHL level. He makes a good first pass, finds shooting lanes and is a dominant force."

Scott Wheeler - The Athletic - March 25th: "He’s a heady passer and shot shaper but mostly impacts games offensively with how eager and loose he plays as a carrier and activator who confidently leads exits and entries and loves to hop off the line (including deep into the O-zone) and join the rush whenever he can with his skating. He also walks the line proficiently and can escape and control the puck against pressure, which allowed him to produce very high shot totals at MSU."

Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - March 13th: "All the elements in his game are translatable to the NHL. There are times when he tries to force plays as opposed to taking the simpler way out, but his talent will outgrow that picky criticism."

Corey Pronman - The Athletic - March 12th: "He makes enough stops to ease most evaluators' concerns given how much offense he brings. He has the potential to be an impact NHL defenseman who scores at a premium level."

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - March 9th: "Levshunov is a great triple threat as a physical, two-way defenseman and, he’s as competitive as it gets. But then you’ll find his spatial awareness seems to lack in his own zone from time to time."

Peter Baracchini - The Hockey Writers - March 7th: "He can take too many risks and his reads and positioning can be off and ultimately costing him on the defensive side of the puck. However, with his size, mobility and offensive upside, there are going to be teams lining up for a player that can be active and impactful in the offensive zone."

Mike Morreale - NHL.com - March 1st: "Levshunov (6-2, 208) defends well, exhibits poise along the blue line, and gets shots through on the power play ... His ceiling is tremendous for a player at his position and that's the reason he claims this spot."

All of this reads third line pairing to me.  I want a shut down, minutes eater on the first line.   None of these assessments, or what I have seen says he has that type of potential.

  5. As a 17 year old college player, it does not seem completely impossible that Celebrini does not sign and holds out to become a free agent.   The NIL he commands is not insignificant.

As for the Ducks, I would be entertaining offers for #3.   Most of the top defenseman seem to be puck movers vs number 1’s.  Not sure there is a true power forward in the mix either.

  6. If not number one, does it really matter this year?   Seems like most everyone feels the next 5 or 6 are fairly equal based on team needs.   Would be great to win, but won’t be broken up if we don’t

Ovi, goes to circle, waits for one-timer pass😁

It’s stunning to me to see Ovi age so quickly.   I would not be surprised if he retires next season (or sooner)

  8. Fowler is not a HOF.   Frankly, he is in the hall of above average.   His numbers are directly related to longevity.   He is the Don Sutton of the Ducks.  Never dominant.   Never a Norris Trophy consideration.  He lucked into a situation where we had no one better for a while and locked him up to a long term, un-tradable contract.   As I have posted many times, I have not seen a player with his physical ability and  incredible lack of hockey sense.    I am willing to give him a bit of a pass since I think that shoulder injury changed the trajectory of his career.

Yes because sometimes you need to get better at other things first before you start seeing the results. SOG for example is significantly better this year. That’s big. That will result in more points over time.

i still stand by that they will be better in the 2nd half than the first…which is coming soon! lol injuries are becoming an issue though…as they were last year but this year feels like a lot more.

be prepared for 41-0-0 to end the season!!! 😛

It was an absolute train wreck last season.  They were not competitive and were historically bad from a goals against basis.    Yes, they are still losing this year.   But the product is night and day better. Flip half of those one goal losses into wins, and you have a fringe playoff team.

his family isn't out west, from what i can tell.

Thought his hometown was Scottsdale.  Could be mistaken.

Still, the Flyers don’t strike me as a poverty franchise to run from.   Something just doesn’t make sense.

  11. I can’t imagine this deal gets done without a guaranteed signature. I just wish I knew what drove the Philly dislike.    I don’t believe it’s Torts as it’s even money that any coach survives more than a couple of years.   My guess is that he wanted to play in the western Conf for family reasons.  It can’t be a money issue since the $ would be the same wherever he signs

I guess we are now officially “Tankin’ for Macklin”

  12. They are literally burning Gauthier in effigy on the Flyers boards.   Throwing batteries at him, etc.   I don’t ever remember having a player on the Ducks hated by another organization

  13. While we won’t really know about this trade until Gauthier makes his decision to play or hold out, I am excited to see the team finally do something that sends a shock throughout the organization.   I fully believe there has been a level of complacency over the last several years.   Hopefully this lights a fire.

  14. There has to be a bigger back story as to why he would not sign in Philly.   While they have had their challenges the last few years, they are a strong franchise with a passionate fan base.  Seems very strange to me.

  15. You have to think that Drysdale’s hold out for no reason, followed by missing 20+ games had to contribute to the decision to trade him.   However, unless Gauthier is signed, it’s the end of Verbeeks career.

  16. Can someone explain how Toronto can fit in Nylander, Matthews and Tavares and still have enough cap room to skate the rest of the team next year?   I must be missing something.   When does Tavares come off the payroll?

Wow. It was totally a head hit, just didn’t seem hard enough to break a normal jaw.

Defenseman is a good 6 inches taller than Bedard.   Of course the hit was going to be high.  Next time he will think twice before skating though the middle.

i'm still going to take this all at face value..., but man this seems more and more like he partied it up after his first NHL game and they're sitting him either because he got himself sick afterwards, or he breached some kind of team rule (on accident).  i mean... the drinking age where he's from is 16 (if that), and he could have been pulled over somewhere (even as a passenger) and...

anyway, the above is all complete speculation with no basis whatsoever on anything, other than a very, VERY wild guess as to why his playing schedule is different from pretty much every other rookie's schedule i've ever heard or read about.

This kind of speculation, even when caveated is irresponsible and should be taken down.
