  1. Our beat writers rarely asked tough questions to begin with lol
  2. Gudas is here for 3 years, and Killorn for 4. There will be plenty of time for that when they eventually sign.
  3. My top 3 players in this game were Carlsson, Dionicio, and Sidorov. Mintyukov had his best game as well. I’m really happy for Sidorov getting that goal because he probably put himself in good chances to score the most out of everyone in the roster during the tournament. Carlsson continues to look really solid; he brought it consistently in each game he played, and in all 3 zones. Even Bombay’s punching bag (Myatovic) had some really nice moments. He was a big factor in the 1st goal when he picked off a pass in the defensive zone, got the puck in on the forecheck and separated it from the Kings player leading to the goal. He had a really nice play finding a player wide open in the slot for a dangerous scoring chance. It’ll be interesting to see who makes a big leap this year out of Pitre, Myatovic and Terrance. Hopefully all 3.
  4. People really need to stop posting “rumors” from nonsense sources/websites on here. If it’s not coming from the usual, more well-known places then 99.9999% of the time it’s garbage. I can live missing out on .0001% situation where the rando actually knew something.
  5. Sidorov’s had some nice chances/shots. Would love to see him get a goal, but I like that he’s putting himself in good spots.
  6. Mintyukov post and then goal. 5 on 3 goal though.
  7. Great sequence by Zellweger there. Too bad Sidorov couldn’t finish it off.
  8. Luneau looks awesome in the offensive zone. Goal #2 for him.
  9. Great play by Gaucher to pick off a pass and set Sidorov up with a great chance at the end of the period.
  10. Carlsson sweet dangles and off the post.
  11. I think this is a good thing for fans. Wage suppression is also a good thing in a sport with a salary cap. Never having to worry about another team trying to poach your young stars, and being able to sign them as cheap as possible means a team that drafts well and manages their contracts/salary cap well can remain a cup competitor for a long time. That’s ultimately what fans should want.
  12. I think his plan is to build a core through the draft and the young players already here when he got the job. The next step will be to supplement that core through trades/signings. I think he feels good about his offensive core since they’ve been around for a few years, but this year will be all about evaluating which ones of Mintyukov, LaCombe, Zellweger, Drysdale, and possibly Helleson take steps to belonging in that defensive core. That’s going to be one of the most important aspects of this season; if these guys struggle then the Ducks are even further away from turning things around. Gudas and Killorn don’t really have anything to do with that. They aren’t here to dig the Ducks out of a hole; that’s the job for the upcoming core players to do. You need some veteran leadership, and Gudas especially fills a need as a RD. As far as lowballing the young guys, so far he’s 1/1 with the Terry contract. Time will tell how well he does with Zegras and Drysdale.
  13. And yet, even after that Kucherov ended up signing an 8 year extension to remain in Tampa. Should Zegras end up signing late like that, I hope the people that inevitably end up freaking out over potential “bad feelings” between him and the team remember this.
  14. Helleson isn’t beating out Drysdale or Gudas, so the last spot comes down to him or Lyubushkin. I think some crazy stuff has to happen for Helleson to get that spot right out of training camp. Helleson should be in San Diego and 1st in line to come up to replace one of those 3 guys for whatever reason comes up.
  15. That’s a pretty lackluster return for San Jose with the Karlsson trade. They are going to have to hope Hoffman has a good season so they can get a 1st for him at the deadline.
  16. Zegras is pretty awful defensively and on face offs as a center, but I’d be really surprised if he remains a center on this team in the future. All the signs point to his best position for him and the team being on the wing. He may not agree with that now, but I feel like the writing is on the wall.
  17. I think a bridge could look good from the Ducks perspective as well. I think the sweet spot is 7.5 x 8. If Zegras wants 8 or more on an 8 year deal, then a bridge probably looks better from the Ducks perspective. Consider this, say the Ducks bridge him for 6m x 2. That’s 12 million. He becomes a PPG player and now he’s looking at 10m x 8 years on an extension. That would get him through his age 31 season, and combining the two contracts that’s 9.2m over 10 years. If you can get him now at 7.5 x 8, you lose out on 2 UFA years which sucks because he’s still well in his prime, but you only spend 60 million instead of 92. The worst case scenario is giving Zegras big money and having him be UFA before 30. Either save a lot of money and still get him through age 29, or spend a little more and get him into his 30s. If he becomes a top player in the league before signing the big extension and now he’s looking at more like 12m/year, well that’s a good problem to have. At least you’re still getting him through age 31 even if it’s 2m more per year.
  18. This conclusion doesn’t make any sense, at least at the moment given that we currently don’t know anything about the negotiations. Just because we’ve been throwing out similar numbers/years for awhile doesn’t mean that would have gotten it done a long time ago. It’s crazy to think Verbeek looks bad today after he got the job done. If it comes out that Terry’s ask has been 7x7 all along, then yeah it would look bad. As of now, we don’t have the facts.
  19. Verbeek is hilarious. All doom and gloom and out of nowhere at the buzzer, bam 7 year deal. This is pretty much a perfect contract too. Ducks get Terry through his age 32 season, buy out 5 UFA years, and don’t go over 7 million. I think Zegras is going to struggle if he wants much more than this given the cost the Ducks just bought out UFA years for, and the fact that Terry has been better than Zegras.
  20. I don’t really care about arbitration shenanigans by team/player. I’m more concerned about what it says concerning a long term deal, and to that end we don’t know. What’s Terry’s thought process? What does the team want? Does Terry even want to be here long term? We can only speculate. If the reality is that Terry won’t be here long term - either by Terry’s choice or Verbeek’s reluctance to give him what he wants (I suppose both things could be true)- then the Ducks need to trade him ASAP. His value will be lower next summer when he’s only 1 year away from UFA.
  21. Everybody loves the idea of giving an offer sheet to a good young player until it’s a young player on your team who’s about to receive one. Certainly teams can do their best to plan ahead so they aren’t as screwed if one comes along, but that’s easier said than done when it comes to balancing “going for it” during a Cup window, and the uncertainty of when one of your draft picks might hit and suddenly need a new contract. Personally, I like the fact that GM’s aren’t screwing each other over trying to poach young talent away. It’s nice to know that if you draft a Zegras, the only thing you need to worry about is whether or not you can buy out UFA years far down the line.
