I don’t think that’s the case, depends how you define “all-in” though. I usually refer to it when you’re in your contending window and you start mortgaging future picks, prospects and maximize spending to win a cup. We aren’t close to that and have no key players except Terry locked up long term. Spending to get a RD and RHW may not really change the current internal budget after the Ducks shed over 13 mil in cap space with Silf, Henrique and drysdale now off the books, with maybe more to come. I’d be surprised if there is a significant increase in actual salary costs next year than this year.

What else does the top 6 need according to Verbeek? If he adds that and solidifies the bottom 6, what else can he do? Also adding a top 4 RD? These aren't cheap moves. Also he said he didn't want to be a seller anymore.

The dude isn’t even available, and you’re blaming the owners for being cheap.

why would the owners not have an internal cap when we are in the rebuilding phase.   Hey guys we are trying to suck enough to get Bedard, why don’t we sign a bunch of guys to $7-8 mil deals …. GMPV already said in an interview, I spoke with the Samuelies before I accepted this job and they assured me when I say it’s time to go all in, they will lift the internal cap.

That should be this summer since Verbeek said he wanted to add a top 6 RS RW and a top 4 RD.

I don’t think there will be a shortage of suitors for Marchessault or Reinhart whether Stamkos is on the market or not.
I think they know what their ballpark values are and it will be more about who they sign it with. Now that I think about it, I don’t think whether Stamkos signs here makes a difference because those other guys likely aren’t waiting around for him to sign to use as a bargaining chip. The longer the wait in free agency, the more you risk of options drying up and not getting the best deal.

Sure but if the basic working theory is that Stamkos signs with Tampa and Reinhart signs with Florida, that just leaves Marchessault and Toffoli. There are no other legit top 6 RS forwards unless you throw Elias Lindholm into it and the basic working theory around him is Boston. Honestly, I don't think we specifically need a RS wing. What's happening with Grumpy in that scenario? I thought Cutter-Leo-Grumpy looked good together. I also like Z-McT-Terry together. What's left? Vatrano-Strome-? You do not specifically need a RS and there is an abundance of LS forwards that you could consider top 6 in free agency.

You’d think him getting more money elsewhere would do that. I think they’d love for him to sign in Anaheim for that reason.

tampa is in a tough spot with 8 UFAs and only 12 mil in cap space next year. Seabrook’s LTIR comes off the books so they need to get creative if they want to try to make another run next year.

Taking him off the market increases the prices of the others. Basic supply and demand. Marchessault might have increased his value by $1M just by Stamkos being off the market.

  5. Martin Madden became the Director of Amateur Scouting in 2008. I'm not saying these were all his picks but it spans 3 GM's:

2008- Jake Gardiner, Justin Shultz. Both turned out to be very good players but never played here

2009-Mat Clark-Sami Vatanen (one of my all time favorites)-Scott Valentine

    2010-Cam Fowler-Tim Heed

    2011-Andy Welenski-Josh Manson

    2012-Hampus Lindholm-Andrew O'Brien-Brian Cooper-Jacob Meygna

    2013-Shea Theodore(never got a chance here)-Keaton Thompson

    2014-Marcus Petterson-Brandon Montour-Mark Berkovitz

    2015-Jacob Larsson-Steve Ruggiero

    2016-Josh Mahura

    2017-No defense drafted

2018-Hunter Drew (but was converted to a forward)

    2019-Jackson LaCombe-Henry Thrun-William Francis-Mathew Hill

    2020-Jamie Drysdale-Ian Moore-Thimo Nickl

    2021-Olen Zellweger-Tyson Hinds

    2022-Pavel Mintyukov-Noah Warren-Tristan Luneau

    2023-Konnor Smith-Rodwin Dionicio-Vojtech Port

I don’t think it’s debatable that the Ducks have had a lot of recent success drafting defensemen regardless of the round they picked them in, and regardless if they went on to have their best seasons elsewhere. They absolutely do a good job on the whole of identifying defensive talent.

When you say recent, how many years back are you going?

  7. 8 minutes ago, Spencer_12 said:

If he’s the Ducks’ guy then I doubt he trades back. You never know how teams evaluate players compared to the public rankings, and all it takes is one to agree with the Ducks and snatch him up. I also don’t think it’s anything to worry about. The Ducks certainly know better than us, and defense has been their speciality.

I don't know about defense being a specialty. Larson was a bust. I personally would have picked Trouba over Lindholm. Drysdale has developed into an injury prone player. The Ducks have picked better defense in the second round than they have with forwards.

For whatever it’s worth, Pronman of the Athletic has Yakemchuk at #3 right now. Not saying he’s my guy, but I’d be confident in any D the Ducks picked if that’s where they end up going considering the track record.

I don’t know that the Ducks would have to move up to draft Sennecke. His rankings are all over the place including a bunch of 2nd round grades. Right now, if the Ducks are going to trade up in the middle of the 1st round I’m taking Connelly. He’s really impressing me and he’s got everything Verbeek wants in a player. Doubt it happens because those kinds of trades are rare to begin with.

Pronman also had Makar ranked 18th in his draft year while just about everyone else had him no lower than 7th. I'll take his rankings with a grain of salt. From what I've seen of Yakemchuk, he's the next John Klingberg.

I agree and the only thing I’d bet money on is that Leshunov is our pick if he’s on the board. After that, I’m not confident in predicting. Taking Silayev either puts an LHD on their off side or there’s a trade in the near future. Silayev definitely fits the Verbeek profile. Rather take him than Yakemchuk. If he got Leshunov then pulled off a trade up to get Sennecke then I’ll be floored with the draft.

Meh for me on Sennecke. I've watched a shifts video on him. I would rather move up to pick Chernyshov or stay put and pick Hemming (who has 4 goals in the U18's and 6 points). However, if Verbeek moves up, I could see him picking Adam Jiricek.

I don't think he moves up though. If I had to guess the Ducks draft targets would be Levshunov, Silayev, Badinka, Ej Emery.

    Thanks for the breakdown!

I don’t think there’s any chance Eiserman is our pick. Helenius is much more of a Verbeek guy on top of being right handed. I don’t think he’d be a center either. Hes my dark horse forward but it’s still a bit of a reach.

Connolly seems like his stock is rising and we’ll miss out on him unless we traded up but I think he’s going to high for us to get with a 2nd first.

    1st choice is Levshunov

    2nd choice is Silayev

    He's going defense

He’s the belle of the ball this season. Hes coming off of a 57 goal 94 point season. I’d be surprised if he takes less than 10-11 million.

And after they pay him that (which I seriously doubt they will) he'll go back to being a 30 goal player. No one is going to be paid more than Barkov and I'm not convinced he's worth as much as Tkachuk.

  12. 12 minutes ago, saskduckfan said:

Which is why when everyone is saying the Ducks should sign Stamkos for 8mil per, I'm saying the Ducks should take that and the extra two mil and sign Reinhart instead. Age fits our rebuild. Florida can sign Stamkos as their backup when they lose Reinhart.

Stamkos wouldn't be a long term signing while Reinhart would be.

That said, this debate or discussion is based off of what Verbeek says he wants. Personally, I think he's screwing the pooch by wanting to put all his eggs in one basket i.e. putting all the young talent in two lines.

    Cutter-Leo-Grumpy

    Vatrano-McT-Strome

    UFA-Z-Terry

That breaks up the scoring amongst three lines. I'm not calling it lines 1-3. I'm not calling it a top 6 or anything like that. Just three lines that can score. I don't think there is a need for a top 6 forward.

You know where I could see Stamkos signing if he doesn't go back to Tampa. Florida. Contending team, still in Florida, doesn't have to uproot the family, etc. And just over $20mil in cap space going into next season. Even needing to resign players the Panthers have the room to get this done and if staying in Florida and winning championships is a top priority, this would be his best option. The Panthers could easily offer him $9mil per season and still be fine.

You think Florida would sign Stamkos over Reinhart who is 6 years younger? That would be crazy. If Stamkos wants to stay in Tampa, he's taking a cheap contract.

Comparing Killorn to Stamkos is ridiculous. A guy with career earnings of $30 mil vs $116.675 mil is comparing apples to oranges. Of course Killorn is going for the money, he hasn't earned all yet. Stamkos has earned $80mil more then Killorn in his career. He doesn't need the money. If he retires before 40, I bet there is a front office job in Tampa with his name on it. Will he work at Tim Hortons? No, he has earned $116 mil, he doesn't need to work ever. If you want to compare apples to apples, Ryan Getzlaf is a good example. A guy that also made $100mil over his playing career. Came off his big $66mil contract, was a UFA, had options to make a lot more money (Oilers were willing to offer him close to $7mil), play for more competitive teams, etc, but decided to sign for less, stay in Anaheim and retire a Duck as that is where he spent his entire career, started his family, etc. Sounds just like the Stamkos situation that he has now. I can guarantee he is not leaving Tampa and especially to chase money on a rebuilding team. If you think he is coming here for a big pay day because he needs it, then that is the ridiculous statement.

I didn't say he needs to come here for the money but if he values himself more than a $3M contract with Tampa he'll go wherever is going to pay him more.

  15. 3 minutes ago, saskduckfan said:

You really think he is looking for a big pay day to be financially sound for his family? He doesn't need it. He's had contracts of $11.175 mil, $37.5 mil, and $68mil. You dont think that $116.675 mil is enough to financially support his family? He also is listed with a net worth of $14mil which is more then any of us will see in our lifetime. I think his family is pretty financially secure already. Not to mention the amount of money that he would have made on endorsements. The guy is already financially sound for his family. With kids in school, does it make sense to uproot them from a school system for a 3 year contract with someone because they offered you more money then Tampa, and then have to move them again in 3 years. No. Stamkos is not going to leave Tampa. I guarantee he will resign with them for less then he would probably get on the open market. Why? Because he doesn't need the money and his life is in Tampa Bay.

Gauthier or Carlsson are not Kucherov. I don't see Gauthier or Carlsson hitting 150 points in any of the 3 seasons people want Stamkos for, if ever. So you can't call Gauthier or Carlsson a replacement for Kucherov. We dont have a player the likes of Kucherov. And if Stamkos came here, he would draw more attention and his numbers would drop, plain and simple. I also don't know how one player makes the rest of the team more competitive. He could come into the team and the players that took all the lazy and dumb penalties continue to do so. Just because Stamkos is here doesnt mean players will play better because of it. They may choose not to.

That's ridiculous. If he retires from hockey before he turns 40, what job opportunities does he have? You think he's going to work at Tim Hortons? Look at Killorn. You know why he's in Anaheim and not being paid less in Montreal (his lifelong dream)? For money. His career earnings before coming to Anaheim was in the $30M range. Of course you're going to go to the place that offers you the most.

That will be the issue.  If ANA can significantly overpay any other suitor's price, then he could end up here.

4 years, $6.5 mil, for example.  Does that beat all other offers?  Does that make sense for ANA?  Those are the turning points.

A three year contract makes more sense for Anaheim. The kids by then should have in theory have made the playoffs and should be the "veterans" ready to take the reigns when Killorn and Stamkos (whoever else) are ready to ride off into the sunset. Tampa can offer him the hometown discount which I don't think would even be $3M. The Red Wings could offer $6.5M. Verbeek has to offer more. If Marchessault or even Toffoli do not want to come here and Stamkos does are you going to say nah?

  17. 2 hours ago, saskduckfan said:

I don't want him to lower the asking price for Gibson, or even trade him. Just let Gibson play out as your backup. I said if nobody is willing to offer Verbeek's asking price for Gibson and he really wants to dump the contract, then he will have to lower his asking price to dump him.

Gudas is the only player that made the Ducks better. Vatrano is listed because he almost scored 40 this year. Did he score 40 last year? No. Did he take a bunch of stupid penalties over and over? Yes. Did that make the Ducks better? No as they lost games because they needed to kill his penalties. Verbeek said Killorn was brought in for penalty killing. Did he make the penalty kill better? No, they were worse then last year. So that didn't work. Vatrano, Killorn, and Strome are all playing too high in the lineup.

And how does an aging 35 year old Stamkos make the Ducks better? Sure he put up 40 goals and 81 points which on paper makes the Ducks better, but take him out of that system and away from his setup man Kucherov (who put up 144 points) does he continue to have the same success or does his production drop significantly? I think his production drops. Teams are so focused on Kucherov that Stamkos gets open and he produces. Who do the Ducks have that is a comparison to a 144 point Nikita Kucherov? The Stamkos/Kucherov in Tampa is the same as McDavid/Hyman in Edmonton. On any other team Hyman does not put up 50+ goals, but teams focus so much on McDavid that Hyman is available. And better yet, how does bringing in an aging Stamkos for only 3 years until he is 38 and then telling him to take a hike help? I'm sure if that's the plan the player will be thrilled to move his family for 2 seasons, likely get traded in the third season and then do it all over again. If I'm a player and the negotiation is a 3 year contract and knowing you aren't getting resigned due to the raises coming to the core players I'm not looking at your team. I want to play in the playoffs, compete for a cup, and the Ducks are not doing that in the next 3 seasons with or without Stamkos. The guy will be thinking what is best for his family at this point in time in his career and I can fully see him resigning in Tampa for $3mil a season just so he doesn't have to move his family. He has played his entire career there. Had a chance to leave with his last contract, and left more money on the table then to stay in Tampa. Now he is going to take more and leave. I highly doubt it.

Just to be technically correct, Stamkos turned 34 in February. He makes the Ducks better by making the kids more competitive. Replace Kucherov with Gauthier or Carlsson. That will make them better. He's also a winner. The team needs more of those to change the culture.

If your choices are a $9M contract in Tampa, $15M in Detroit or $25M in Anaheim which do you think helps your family financially the most? He's already won cups. He's already a HHOF candidate. If he's really thinking about the best for his family, he'll go to the place where he will make more.

What big name coach did you want them to get that would also come here? Top coaches have more and better options. The capitals hired carbery before this season started. Were they being cheap? Cronin was an assistant with the islanders and Toronto.

The Sharks need a new coach now and they are in the rebuild boat as well. It’ll be interesting to see who they hire. Is someone like Berube going there? My guess is they aren’t landing a top coach though

I wouldn't be surprised if Hakstol ends up there.

  19. 25 minutes ago, BombaysTripleDeke said:

Pro sports is littered with cheap owners. Vegas was a contender since day one which is why they’ve ruthlessly spent since. I don’t blame the Samuelis for not allowing a spending binge through a rebuild as long as the bank is open whenever they become contenders again. Look at the free agents they’ve spent money on the last two seasons. They’ve got long term financial commitments coming up.

The NHLPA should push for a higher cap floor. Next season there should be a space of $23M between the floor and the upper limit. Make it something like a $15M difference and the cheapskates will have to spend.
