This doesn't really affect me since I don't listen to the radio calls very often.  And now that they're not even on the actual radio, it's very rare there's a time when I can listen to the game but not watch the game, and hockey is very much a visual sport for me.

I used to listen a lot more than I have recently, and Dan Wood was...fine.  I remember when he was hired and I was incredibly glad he replaced Brent Severyn, but I never really cared for his voice all that much.  He had a great rapport with Steve Carroll (who is excellent), and he seemed friendly and well-informed.  Overall, he seemed to do a good job.

I'm more interested in whether this means changes are coming on the TV side.  Ahlers and Hayward have been doing it forever (literally, in Hayward's case, who joined the organization in their first year).  I wonder if the team is going to let them ride off into the sunset together.  But neither is necessarily close to retirement - Hayward is 62 and while I can't find Ahlers' age, I'm sure he's younger.  So does the team push them out at some point as well?

Basically, I'm wondering what this indicates:

    • Is it as simple as the fact that someone in the organization wasn't satisfied with Dan Wood and wants to replace him?
    • Or are there larger changes coming for the media personalities or broadcasts?
    • Are other personalities in jeopardy?
    • Are they looking to change the way they broadcast games entirely?

next broadcaster will be some AI

    LOL

  2. I haven’t been in this thread practically all year and reading all these comments about people wondering why Eakins is still on surprised me a bit. My thought from the start of the year was the that the goal was not to win but to in fact lose. It’s no coincidence that this years draft is so crazy deep and includes a generational player. As the season went on the Ducks stayed at the bottom and I could see how this has all played into GMs plan. If the Ducks do manage to grab one of those super hot draft players everyone here is going to forget what they said and thank Eakins as he was critical to keeping the Ducks low in the ranks. We will then see next year what is done with the coaching situation as we should have all our draft players GM wants and can now begin to deal and there will be a better team to build around giving more reason for a new coach.

I like that Verbeek is cleaning house sans Eakins, especially with development personnel. Good on the Samuelis for allowing him to freedom to do so, so far. We’ll see what happens when the checkbook needs to start opening up

The GM has always had the freedom to pretty much what they want under the Samulelis. The thought that the owners hand tied Bobs hands in dictating budget and /or player move constraints I think was always just Bob being Bob and what Bob proponents said in his defense.

Verbeek strikes me as a Brian Burke 2.0. I like it.

I still think a lot of that was on the Samuelis. When they bought the team and after the Cup win the motto was "Get into the playoffs every year, have a perennial contender year in, year out" - and Bob was trying to follow that order to varying degrees of success, seasons of '15 and '16 being pretty close and painful in how they ended, but it was a good run after the team got back up again from the horrible 2008 season.

In the articles about hiring Verbeek which mentioned Scotty and Teemu's involvement, the MO seems to have changed, now we are embracing the traditional rebuild - throw out all the old non-blue chips and draft like madmen, also looking to trade up for better players. It was said that during the GM interviews the ownership was 'very much onboard' with Verbeek's idea on how to build a team, but what bugs me in that regard, is that their initial ask way back in '05 and what they agreed upon just recently are two diametrically opposite approaches - Bob was strictly following the 'perennial contender' mantra like a zealot - always having a solid core and looking to add, even if through the bargain bin...and now suddenly let's tear it all down and go full Zegras. Just...strange.

Some will say well yeah what did you expect Verbeek said he'll do just that when he signed up, but again, the change in course happened up top in the office, be it their experience after 16 years or a sudden change of mind, recent team changes are mostly the ownership's doing and I'm generally on board with throwing away the old core (Manson-Lindholm-Rakell, Getz will expire soon, Silf no longer untouchable) because I really felt it got stale, uninteresting, and the results were not there. What The Beek did was right for the future, and nobody cares about Bob's pet projects anymore because he was a barstool-throwing alcoholic to begin with. Almost feels like being out of a toxic interpersonal relationship, which the removal of Bob epitomized.

And on a completely unrelated note, when people say 'Verbeek' all the time now all I can sensibly think of is a 'Vrblther' creature of Star Wars fame - the nickname 'Litlle Ball of Hate' fits the man and the fictional creature just right. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Vrblther

I don’t think it was the Samuelis holding back or limiting Bob. I just think that was just how Bob operated. I always maintained that he struck me as a good asst GM who is good at drafting but the guy for long term team planning or conducting trade negotiations with other GMs. In my amateur opinion, Most of the time Bob got subpar deals because he was limited in his ability to build relationships and negotiate with other GMs so he got stuck with what he could do. He had no sense of long term (vision) planning as he changed the course of the team make-up a few times back and forth from skating team to a big hard hitting team. He also was usually late with reaction time in making changes only to get some over the hill player most of the time. Best player he got was Ryan K in a trade though but graded with all his other trades and he’s just below average

  5. Seems like a good hockey trade. The 50% retention seems justified as the Ducks get a 2nd rd pick and also a much younger dman who has size, some experience playing big games on gold metal team and is rated pretty good for a young player. GM also considered personal fit too as he played with Z perhaps. Anyhow, win win trade here for both teams. AVS are looking for NOW so they get maturity and experience and someone who can hit and play hard. Manson may potentially be the small piece to push them over the top.

Kudos to the new GM in actually making a good trade that involved a bit of negotiation and moving pieces to improve the team.

Bob either would have never traded Manson or would get back an over the hill past his prime star player (or spare parts) thinking in the short term and also thinking that the team is close to playoff contention. Never thought he was a good consistent trader. Seemed like he got fleeced more often than not.

BTT2Zs is a fun show and whatever he had with the Podcast was funny too, sure, in that regard he fits to the description, but the man himself, the personality, what I remember, mostly looked like Getzlaf - cool, collected and level-headed when not enraged, a quiet personality, low-key when docile.

Zegras jumps out @ you through the screen and you can't help but smile, feel moved or puzzled by the big eyes or the grimaces he delivers. They're childish still, not like Getz' or Kes's, but that should change with age.

    Got it

Patrick Kane, whom Z says he modeled his game after, immediately comes to mind. He was pretty dope in the previous decade and his SC-clinching goal that one time was controversial if a bit convoluted and long-reviewed. He's a guy full of masculine power and manly energies\celebrations, so the problem with Kane is that he's a Dark Side person akin to an Anakin Skywalker, we all remember how the Chicago Forward later became labeled permanently as a dangerous Sex Predator, but the NHL merrily swiped it under the rug because reasons.

With Z, I believe he's a more Light Side guy and won't devolve into some of the shadier type of antics down the road, and I agree with you that we never had that kind of an outwardly person on our roster. Kariya was a notorious hermit, still is, Selanne is just regular like Getz or Scotty. Maybe Pronger, people used to post stories like you could randomly meet him on Katella and have a beer with him and his posse if you're lucky...or was it some other player? Fowler and the Swedes are all quiet.

No, not really, we didn't have anyone like that. Zegras is unique and is the staple of the 3d decade of the Ducks, first decade being Kariya-Selanne-Ruccin-Giguere, and second one mostly Getzlaf and Perry. Luckily, we avoided most sex and abuse scandals and crap like cap circumvention by trash like Kovalchuk, only Bob faltered, but everyone knew about the bar stool for years, and they swiped him away quickly and mostly silently.

Zegras is getting noticed for his unorthodox approach and theatrics, a breath of fresh air, really.

Kess Boss a bit off the ice?

If the stories of a history of abuse are true, I have greater concern about the overall lack of involvement by team ownership.  Are the Samueli’s so disengaged that they were not aware of any issues?   We need to hear from Henry and Susan.  Why did they let this go on as long as they did?  What did they know and when?

I would say they are disengaged as they failed to see the need to have replaced Bob a long time ago. I don’t think they have been involved with the Ducks (it would seem to be) for quite some time.

Games will be on Bally Spirts So Cal, Bally Sports West, ESPN, and TNT.  NBCSN no longer has hockey.

Thanks! I must be way out of the loop. Never heard of Bally Sports. Had to look it up. Good info. I appreciate it.

  10. Just posted in NHL thread but I really just care about the Duck games only sooo reposting here…

How are all you going to watch the upcoming Ducks games on tv? Is it still only Prime? Or also ESPN 0-3, TNT and NBCSN? Hard to find something on internet with straight forward info on all channels playing certain games. Sling Blue package has all 3 of these (except ESPN+ And still no Prime). I had Sling until they lost Prime. I like Sling it’s cheaper than the rest. What info do you guys got? What streaming service will you watch on?

Still glad it happened. He deserves a proper ending. I don't mind the $. It's not that BM is so busy signing free agents.

Define “proper ending” and what the chances are of obtaining this ending this year … or next… or next

This draft does seem to be ripe for "let's look back at the 2021 draft 10 years later! Wow! Crazy so many teams passed on that #15 drafted player!"

Or, "Looking back at the biggest #1 picks busts in the past 10 years! At #1....the 2021 #1 pick!"

I would have been excited for Power...I would ahve been hopeful he could have developed into a great complimentary piece to Drysdale. Not that the others couldn't. Also would be excited about Beniers....or anyone we'll be getting haha

It's the #3 pick! 2nd best pick in our franchise! And now all those people who keep saying you need a top 5 pick to win the Cup....we got that!!

Yes you need top picks to win the cup but depends on who is picking and ultimately running the show. If that person (cough cough) is just mediocre at what they do then the top picks don’t amount to much.

I am sure if Bob was a manager back then, he would not trade Tverdovsky - he would treat him like he treats Cam Fowler - our untouchable "franchise player", creative defenseman, how can I trade second-overall pick, bla, bla, bla.....Jack Ferreira had guts to do it, something Bob does not have.

Also, if memory serves me right, at the time of this trade Selanne had like 3 years remaining on his contract at very reasonable $2.75 mil per season. It was a steal for this team, perhaps the best trade in Ducks history. Selanne turned out to be a Hall of Fame member, Tverdovsky was bounced from team to team before he end up playing in Europe, and Chad Kilger? I never even heard of him since he got traded.

I agree. Bob is ultra conservative and takes no risks. He can only see what is in his own cup at the moment but fails to see  the potential in making moves to achieve the optimum results. My assumption is that He shrivels up when another GM counters his initial proposals. He lacks the art of the GM deal making.
