  1. I've watched the hit in slo-mo a few times and I think it's 50-50 whether that's a head injury or an aggravation of his previous shoulder injury. From the front camera angle, I don't see a lot of head contact on the hit and it also doesn't look like Kase's head hit the ice. However, his right shoulder sure does drive pretty hard into the ice. Anyone know which shoulder had the torn labrum? If it was the right shoulder, that definitely could be the concern.
  2. I worry less about a losing environment than having them in a "quitting" environment, which is what we had last season under Carlyle. Even if they have some lengthy losing streaks or goal scoring droughts, I don't think they're going to quit on HCDE this season. That said, this is currently a roster with a gaping hole at right-D, and I am in favor of finding a legit NHL veteran player to fill that role. Even if it's just a 3rd pair bruiser like Gudbranson or McQuaid. We already have six inexperienced players getting regular playing time (Terry, Jones, Comtois, Steel, Guhle and Larsson) and I don't think the answer to Manson's injury is another rookie. If they bring up another rookie, its going to put too much pressure on the veterans to try to protect all of the kids. Plus, I think it will slow the team's development to have too many young players in there learning on the job. I hope GMBM makes a move soon to get a guy who knows what it takes to play in the NHL. I don't expect an $8M/year top-pair guy, but I do hope for an upgrade on the right side over Holzer, Hakanpaa, etc.
  3. Not sure if you caught the start of this sequence of posts, but it was based on a discussion of acquiring Gudbranson to play with Guhle on a 3rd pairing. It’s all wishing and speculation, but Lindholm-Manson, MDZ-Fowler, Guhle-Gudbranson was what I had in mind, with Holzer and Mahura as the 7/8 D-men. I’m also fine with MDZ in every night for the time being. He and Guhle can also swap spots depending on score/situation. And next season, I want to see a legit right-shot top-4 D-man added to fill that gaping hole.
  4. I wouldn't call it "giving up", I would call it moving on due to proper asset management. Unless Larsson learns to play the right side, I think he loses out eventually in a numbers game due to the Ducks depth at his position. We're stacked with left-shot D-men who can play the left side with Lindholm, Fowler, Guhle, MDZ, and Larsson. MDZ likely isn't back next year, but with Guhle looking clearly better than Larsson so far, and with Mahura and Benoit (both left-shot LDs) looking solid in their development, where does Larsson fit into the lineup 2-3 season from now? Especially if Fowler moves back to the left side if/when GMBM finds another right-shot top-4 D-man? Outside of keeping Larsson as expansion draft fodder, I don't really see place for him in Anaheim long term. But unfortunately, like the Athletic article seems to confirm, GMBM appears committed to seeing him develop in Anaheim. So I'm guessing GMBM will be stubborn and won't be willing to move on from Larsson until his trade value bottoms out and he becomes the next Jordan Schmaltz. Just like what's happened with Ritchie.
  5. A Guhle-Gudbranson 3rd pairing would be solid. Of course, GMBM will never do that because he’s eyeballs deep in the notion that Larsson is an NHL-caliber defender and so he won’t want to block him.
  6. Gudbranson would be an upgrade over Holzer and I bet we could get him for almost nothing too. He’s been scratched a couple of times and tried on the left side for a game. It sounds like he’s just not fitting in there this season. I’d take a flyer on him. If we send Ritchie, maybe we could even get back that 4th round draft pick we wasted on Deslauriers.
  7. Schedule makers did him no favors either. So far they’ve had 6/7 games on the road with the only home game against Pittsburgh. 20 of their first 30 games are on the road too. I’ve never seen a schedule like that before.
  8. Unfortunately, this. It's too bad 3-way deals are not a thing in the NHL. If they were, a Buffalo-Winnipeg-Anaheim trade involving Byfuglien, Ristolainen, and our abundance of young forwards would make a ton of sense for all three teams.
  9. Even with a bad ankle, he still put up 2G/6A in six games against the Blues in the playoffs while averaging more than 25 mins of TOI per game. Also, as Nieder said there's nothing to indicate that Big Buff has been a locker room cancer in the past. Sometimes locker rooms just have issues between players and one or both needs to be moved. That doesn't mean they won't fit into their new locker room (See, e.g., Hoffman, Mike and Karlsson, Erik).
  10. So there are rumors circulating that Dustin Byfuglien has taken his personal leave of absence from the Jets due to a falling out he had with his teammates, Blake Wheeler (captain) in particular. Makes you wonder if there is a trade demand there and Byfuglien is just waiting it out until he is traded. If so, why not Anaheim?? He's 34 and is due $14M over this season and next, so that's a bit expensive for an older guy. But if there was ever an old and expensive guy I'd want to take a chance on, it's Byfuglien. He would immediately improve our PP by 150% and he would be pretty much the ideal RHD to slide into the #4 spot next to Fowler. If there's really a trade demand there, and with him not reporting to camp at all, you'd have to think the price tag would not be that expensive either. He's also got three kids under 10 and SoCal could conceivably be high on his list of places he'd like to raise his kids. Lastly, his contract expires before the expansion draft, so he would not need ED protection. Any other takers besides me?
  11. Nailed it! That's what I see too. Reputation or not, I would hope/expect that Kane will get the 10 games he deserves for this. Even if that was Connor McJesus doing it, that's a category II suspension for sure.
  12. This is what I originally thought too, but apparently teams can use LTIR during the summer after all. Capfriendly discusses it in their LTIR FAQs. You need a doctor to sign off on it and the player going on LTIR must not be able to play the first 10 games and not be active for the first 24 days of the season.
  13. This is just so they can be sent to the AHL affiliates. Anyone on an NHL standard player contract who is not exempt from waivers will go on waivers before being sent to the AHL. It’ll happen to our guys too. Carrick, Poturalski, Martinsen, Hakanpaa, etc will all go on waivers if/when they get cut from the Big Club’s roster. Bottom line... Roy and Megna are not NHL players, no matter where they sign in free agency.
  14. A bit the opposite of Laine though because Bobby actually wanted to move away from the Twins. He was a RW forced into playing LW (which he didn't seem to like) and he got tired of being the 4th passing option on a 3-man line since Getzlaf and Pears would spend a whole shift just playing catch with each other. So Bobby had a few too many pops at a charity golf event and shot his mouth off to a reporter, and everything deteriorated from there. But I agree that Laine is probably looking at a shortened career in Winnipeg. Those are tough comments to come back from. And they should definitely trade him for D now that their blue line has deteriorated this summer.
  15. Seriously, in less than 3 months the right side of their defense went from Byfuglien + Trouba + Myers to Neal Pionk and... and.. who else do they even have??
  16. According to CapFriendly: Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Kerfoot, Johnsson, Kapanen, Hyman, Moore, Petan and Agostino are all signed through 2020-21 and counting against that cap number mentioned above. That's 11, no?
  17. I count two forwards based on Capfriendly. Did you include Hyman? Or maybe you are saying three forwards after Nylander is traded? Either way, I don't think trading Nylander requires salary to come back. I see a handful of teams that could absorb his cap hit (especially if its pro-rated by an in-season trade) that could really use him and who would be able to deal just picks and prospects, such as the Kings (barf). And even the Leafs bring some salary back, it will almost certainly be a player who plugs right into their lineup. Nylander's contract is also extremely trade friendly since it has already paid him $12M last season, and $8.3M of the $9M he is owed this season was already paid on July 1st as a signing bonus. It's hard to imagine that Toronto couldn't find a good deal for him based on that salary structure alone. A team could snatch him up for just $700K in salary this season (pro-rated) and $6M for the next four seasons, which would be a great bargain for a 23-year-old 2-time 60+ point player who can play center or wing. It's almost a shame we are awash in good young RWs, because I would trade for Nylander now in a heartbeat.
  18. I think Hyman is expected back from his knee surgery in November, and when that happens they will have to do some salary shuffling to stay under the cap. My guess is that Nylander goes in a "hockey trade" once Hyman is healthy.
  19. They currently have more than $15M in cap space slated for 2020-21, and that's assuming the cap doesn't go up. I would think that Barrie and Muzzin are practically a lock to re-sign with that cap space. You'd also expect that Nylander is going to be traded sometime before the next draft, so that's another almost $7M of cap space available next season (and likely a 1st rounder in return), so they'll be able to re-sign Ceci if they want to (I don't think they will) or to chase another defender (Faulk?). I actually think Toronto's front office has played this perfectly and that they're now going to be a destination for plenty of aging NHLers to take hometown discounts for one shot at breaking the drought (see e.g. Spezza, Jason) for the foreseeable future.
  20. I meant for the Ducks' hockey team, not your fantasy team.
  21. Trade idea: The Sabres are currently $1.06M over the cap, so let's send them Patrick Eaves ($3.15M cap hit) in exchange for Zach Bogosian ($5.14M cap hit). Bogo is likely out until October due to hip surgery, but once he returns he could could step in as Fowler's SAH partner, which could free up Fowler to rush the puck more and take more chances in the O-zone. He's UFA after this season so there's no long-term ED implications, and IMO he could provide some solid "protection" for our young kids in their first official season while they figure out the NHL game. If Bogo plays decent and the Ducks end up as sellers at the deadline, he could also bring back a draft pick or two, which would make his net $3M salary increase more worth it. Anyone else in on this?
  22. According to Eric Stephens in the Athletic, GMBM did beat it. He apparently offered 2 years at somewhere between $2M-$2.5M. Shatty declined and instead signed with a real contender, closer to home, and in a state with no income tax. Oh well. I’m slightly encouraged by this though, as it appears GMBM is still working to upgrade the #4 D spot. Hopefully he can pull something off to fix that gaping hole before the season starts.
  23. If I'm a "contending" team, I'm not looking to sign him now, I'm looking to see where he lands so that I can try to acquire him at the deadline (if he proves he's worth it). Me too, which is why I had that crazy trade proposal for him earlier (which everyone knows Bob would never have the guts to do). But I also think people are too quick to dismiss the chances of him coming out West. He's 30, he just had his first child about a month ago, and he's been getting absolutely CRUSHED by New York media for the past two seasons. Given his stage of life and hockey career, why wouldn't he want to move someplace like Southern California to try to revive his NHL career? It's a great place to raise a family, there's no media circus, and he'd get top-4 minutes on a team that already has a world-class netminder and three other very good D-men. Given what Shatty has experienced the past few seasons on the east coast, I would think that he couldn't pack his bags fast enough if GMBM called up his agent and expressed some interest.
  24. The organization is almost at the 50 contract limit, so its unlikely we'll see any more free agent signings by the Ducks. Probably just a few AHL-only contracts to fill out the Gulls defense. If there are any player additions to the Ducks roster between now and opening day, it will be via trade.
  25. You could also likely flip him at the deadline if the Ducks aren’t in the hunt for a playoff spot to recoup some picks.
