If Stamkos comes at a reasonable price, then I would take him. Like the Selanne 1 year contract for $1mil to show he still has game. At 35 years old signing Stamkos to his final NHL contract at $8mil per season, no thanks, as I believe that once he is removed from Kucherov his numbers will drop significantly. Yes he put up 40 goals but with Kuch setting him up all the time that's one thing. Who do the Ducks have that is comparable to Kucherov? Nobody. So if you sign Stamkos to a 3 year $8mil contract and now he puts up 19 goals and 45 points, is it worth it? I see Stamkos resigning in Tampa for less then he currently makes and finishing his career with one franchise.

I dont have specific moves, but he needs to make moves that actually improve this team. He has talked about players being traded away because of their age and being older when the rebuild timeline is complete, so I don't know how signing a 35 year old player would fit anywhere near those plans. He needs to quit losing all his trades and quit making terrible coaching hires, and have the guts to fire someone when they don't perform. So far the moves that he has made are just bringing in warm bodies and doing nothing for the team. He needs to start making moves that make sense and make the team better.

Agree with every single word you said. Question though: how do you get rid of FOWLer and Gibson? Who is going to take them? It's not Verbeek's fault that nobody wants them, it The Barstool Bob who signed them to these ridiculous contracts.  So, the Ducks just have to ride them until their contracts expire, although I do them buying out the last year of Gibson's contact.

.....Brutal.  53rd out of 54 goalies to play 25 or more games.

Wow. it's an interesting statistic. I knew he is bad, but I didn't realized he is SO BAD.  My educated guess is the Ducks will keep him for 2 more years and will buy out the final year of his contract.

20 min of nice talk about nothing. This girl accurately avoided asking him difficult questions, such as:

    1) Are you going to extend Cronin or let him go?  2) What are you going to do with several underperforming veterans on this team? 3) Do you feel personally responsible for team abysmal performance in the last two seasons? 4) When is a real target season for playoffs, next season, 2 seasons from now, 3 years? 5) When will you stop picking up borderline NHL players from waivers? 6)Do you plan to keep all your 1st and 2nd round picks this year or will try to trade one of the picks for offensive help? That's what I really wanted to hear from interviewer.

Yes, such a great idea to protect the Leo investment when he wasnt playing every game and got hurt himself. If that was the plan, then Johnston should have sat when Leo sat and been scratched while he was hurt. He wasnt.

The idea is not to mortgage the future. The idea is to get out of the rebuild faster and remain competitive for 10+ seasons. Not to be the doormat for 10+ seasons which is where we are heading.

oh, man, I am missing Burke. I remember him saying to Dan Wood of OC Register "If you don't play with an edge, you have no place in my team". First thing he did is got rid of Ozolinsh, who had some decent offensive skills but was softer than puffy toy defensively.  Does anybody really think FOWLer would ever sign 8 years contract in Burke's tenure? He would be gone after the first 40 games.

LOL, not sure I'd want the coach's job, but I'll gladly apply for the GM position.

Not a bad idea. At least I know you would not extend Mayers, McGinn, Linderstrom, Jones and Johnson, lol, and try hard to unload some of our underperforming "legends".

Verbeek won't trade his draft picks. Trading 1st round + prospect for a proven scorer requires some guts, versatility and persistence to bug other GM's, some merits that I didn't notice in Verbeek past trades. He'll use his early 1st round pick which may be a good player 3-4 years down a road, and late first round pick, which most likely will be Max Jones #2.

I never said good players make good GM´s but someone posted PV was unsuccessful as a player. I replied to that.

The vet signings aren´t bad IMO. You can´t have 23 20-year olds skating around. They´ll get murdered. Yes he overpays because that´s the price you pay for being a franchise in Anaheim. I´m sure he wouldn´t overpay if he were a GM in Toronto or New York.

Agree with you that Verbeek has to overpay to lure good players to Anaheim. My point is: I would rather overpay to proven, prolific scorer, someone like 26 y/o Kevin Fiala at the pick of his career, whom Hollywood team got for late 1st round pick + some meah prospect.

    Unsuccessful as a player?

He was OHL rookie of the year.

Played in the NHL (1400+ games played, 1000+ points and 500+ goals). He won a Stanley Cup and got elected twice to the All-star game.

Also World Championship gold. If that is unsuccessful I´m very curious what a player has to do in order to be successful.

    What is Varbick btw?

Being a good player does not mean this person will be a good GM. Remember Gretzky as a coach and GM of Arizona Coyotes?

While I am old enough to remember Verbeek as a good player, especially playing for Dallas, as a GM he made quite a few moves that questionable at least.  He signed Strome to $25 mil contract who by the age of 29 for the first and only time in his career scored 21 goals in a season. Before Strome even put Ducks uniform, I knew it will be a waste of money and cap space for the next 5 years.

How do you give 34 y/o Killorn 4 years retirement contract? Now  for the next 3 years we have to cross our fingers he won't go Kesler on us.

I also don't understand PV's love for rejects from another teams. While Leason is a borderline NHL player, what is it he saw in Meyers, Johnson, Lagesson, McGinn that we don't see? I hear the arguments "Oh, they are just fill in people, they'll be gone next season". Well, till Verbeek gets another bunch of warm bodies to fill up?  This summer he'll have 3rd chance to redeem himself, will see what happens.

  9. A very positive post. Parade on Katella in 2027? For some reason I am not as optimistic as Liquor guy is. The young guys you just mentioned, look good on paper, but it does not mean they all going to blend together as one unit. We still have FOWLer is our "best defenseman" with his abysmal -37 plus/minus ratio, we have a legend whos skills completely deteriorated, we have 4th line of McGinn-Johnson-Leason (oy vei!) and 2 other aging overpaid veterans with untradeable contracts. All of them are managed by head coach who has guts to bench Zegras time after time while playing FOWLer 25 minutes a game.

Trust me, dude, I want Ducks to win so badly, but why I am not so optimistic as you are?

  10. In defense of Cronin, do you think someone like Tortorella or other legit. NHL coach would have guts to bench our non-productive veteran players like FOWLer or Strome? Or let our legend sit out at least 5 straight games when he is healthy?

It's politics, higher paid players with long term guaranteed contracts must play, regardless of their performance.

  11. I wonder if someone from Samuili's family watching this team on TV once in a while. Not necessary Henry himself, he is a busy man, but maybe his son, nephew or someone else close to his family. I wonder if some of them would say "Dad (uncle) this team is regressing from year to year, and this is YOUR team. Are you going to do something about it?

  12. I would not be surprised if Verbeek signs Steve Stamkos in the offseason. Indeed, he fits all Verbeek's requirements:

    1. He is old.  2. Verbeek "knows him".  3. Stamkos won a few Stanley Caps in the past, and he'll bring "leadership to the locker room" 4. Seems like by now every player's agent around the league knows, if his client is over the hill and needs a good "retirement contract", Verbeek is the right person to call.

We'll see what happens this summer.

Let's be honest, for those who had been a Duck fan, it is the same story at the end of the season. The GM Osama Vabeek will tell us the same story we hear every year." We will be competitive on the free market, and we will sign our draft picks” and then comes training camp the wheels are falling off.

Face it, The Ducks' ownership does not make money by owning a hockey team that looses. The Samuaelies have other businesses that they make money on, the Ducks team is writing off for the taxes, and we the fans are the one suffering. Ask yourself why in 30 years we never had the draft or the All-Star Game in Anaheim? There are plenty of hotels around. THEY DON'T CARE!

I know that I am not wrong, I have to understand that the team I support will never be a big factor in the NHL.

In defense of Verbeek, we have to admit that he inherited a couple of bad contracts that can't be traded, specifically Silfverberg, Fowler, Gibson. While Silfverberg's contract will expire this summer (halleluiah!), the other 2 will be on the roster for the next 3 years. Gibson's situation is the most problematic. New Jersey was showing some mild interest at the beginning of the year, but eventually decided to go with the cheaper and better Jake Allex. Now we have no takers for Gibson, even if the Ducks would retain 50% of his salary.

Fowler has only 4-teams trade list, one of the is Hollywood team, which obviously don't need him. So, what are the Ducks going to do with these two? Any ideas? My guess is, they have no choice but to keep them for the next 3 years.

P.S. Fowler fans, please don't give me the same old BS "he is a cornerstone of our defense" and stuff like this. Just look at Ducks record, it speaks for itself.

    gauntlet is thrown.

Nice words, but....I have a question.

We have 4 underperforming veterans on this team, won't name them, don't want to upset their die-heart fans again. 2 of them play for this team for a decade, inherited a losing culture and are very expendable, IMO. The other 2 were acquired via FA and significantly overpaid as well. All 4 contracts are not tradeable. What should the Ducks do? Just play them till contracts expire? It means 3 more years of missing playoffs? Interesting what PV will do in the offseason.

    How many games are left?

Do the ducks win any of them?

Perhaps a repeat of the worst team in the NHL again?

    Might garner a 2nd pick?

Celebrini is already a Blackhawk. No way ducks pick first. Ever…

Thanks coach. Just stay the course.

And you too pat… We are all excited.

Even if the Ducks would have a 1st overall, where is guarantee Verbeek would pick Celebrini? PV listens to his "advisers", and I wouldn't be surprise if instead of Celebrini he would pick some no-name Ivashka from KHL, because he has "potential".

Oh yes absolutely! I wasn’t saying I think PV will have him on a short leash, I meant for me personally on my imaginary team that I own, he’s on a short leash next season lol

"Hm..... I don't know".     Is that how he starts he interviews?

  17. Charlatan. 3 years of promises, promises, promises. Someone needs to take pink glasses from his face.  I remember 3 years ago discussion on this forum that by 2024-2025 season Ducks will be a Stanley Cap contender. Now what? By 2027-2028, is so?

P.S. Nothing hurts more than watching opposition players laughing and giggling on the bench, like Dallas players did in the middle of the second period against Ducks in yesterday's game. This is your team, Verbeek.
