When Lindholm and Vatanen had their shoulder labrums repaired in 2017, they returned to game action just over 22 weeks after the surgeries. Drysdale's surgery was reportedly on November 4th, and exactly 22 weeks after that date is April 7th. Seems like he'd have to have a significantly quicker recovery than both Lindholm and Vatanen to get back into NHL games this season. I'd love to see him back, but I'm not optimistic.

Personally, I donā€™t want to see him back. Keep him away from this terrible coaching staff.

this is with the obvious caveat that this doesnā€™t mean I donā€™t want him to be healthy sooner. Just donā€™t want him to be ruined with a bad or lack of system.

  2. Eakins is the antithesis to people like Scotty and Perry. Where Scotty and Perry have basically won everything you can win, Eakins seems to be making an attempt to hold as many ā€œnhl worstā€ records as possible. He already has the worst power play in NHL history under his belt. 1 regulation win in 30 games has to be some sort of record. And I am sure there are others.

Our roster is at max with 23 and the only players that are waivers exempt are Z and McT.

I believe thereā€™sa certain time of day each day where a team needs to meet being Cap compliant. Itā€™s in the afternoon, so I think that means we can be above the max in the morning as long as we do something before the day is up to get us back to 23.

I thought about that, but the Ducks badly need one of the top 4 prospects, so I don't know that it makes much sense. Maybe if the team in the 4 spot wants to give up a later pick to move up one so the Ducks cam take Carlsson.

Ifanything, if I'm the Ducks I trade the 3OA and a 2nd rounder to move up to the 2OA spot. I'd want Fantilli.Ā

    Ā

I think Verbeek wants Fantilli. I donā€™t think he would pass up Bedard, but I think deep down he wants Fantilli. I also think he would pick Carlssson over Michkov if he has a choice. I think this puts us in a really good spot as long as we donā€™t end up better than 2nd from last!

  5. I guess I can create a new thread for him. But just saw he is centering the #1 line for the wild with Kaprizov and Zuccarello. Crazy. Also they have a 3rd line of Reaves, Erikson-Ek, Foligno which looks like a very, very, very physical line!

I would argue that Fowler is top 10 in TOI. There are 140 defensemen without a goal and 57 without an assist. While I understand the "fancy stats" to be analytics I could plainly say that just watching as a fan can provide an opinion on who brings value and who doesn't. In the case of the Ducks, it doesn't matter. Who cares? Wasn't this "the plan" for the season?

Yes it was the planā€¦But sometimes people like the idea of something, then when it happens, they donā€™t like it at all. Not saying anyone in particular here, just a general observation of society. I feel the most bad for players like Fowler and Gibson. They are talented, good players, who look bad due to situations and usage and coaching. I donā€™t think that really changes how players/GMs in the know look at them, but it certainly shades fans perspectives despite how much it was always the plan šŸ˜•Ā  but also Fowler deserves to play on a better team.

Upon further pondering I think it doesn't make sense to do that because it would mean that a team is short handed for longer which would also be unfair. But having a player leave the box and skate to the bench would be a decent idea but probably complicates the game further. What about a goal scored where the change happened to be that fine line for too many men on the ice? Would teams also be able to challenge that? I mean it's a decent idea but probably complicates the game and we don't want anymore of that!

Oh I see. Yeah that does make sense. Going straight tk the bench is an interesting idea. And I agree. We need less of all this review stuff! Statuette of limitations on how long after a play it can be eligible to be reviewedā€¦and also how long a review can go for. If itā€™s inconclusive after 3 min of review, itā€™s not overturned. If itā€™s been 30 seconds after a play, it is no longer eligible to be reviewed. There. You guys. I solved hockey. šŸ˜›

Nice goal, but I hate that he scored in that situation. He was in the box serving the 5-min major / match penalty for Aube-Kubelā€™s brutal headshot on Cal Foote (which should also be a suspension IMO). I wish there was some way to prevent a guy from scoring when he comes out of the box after a match penalty. Like, a rule that the guy in the box has to go to the bench before re-joining the play.Ā

Good for Sonny though. Dude has good hands.

Or like the 5 for fighting rule where you canā€™t rejoin till after play stops.

Iā€™m actually shocked itā€™s not the same for a match penalty.

I think thereā€™s a difference between being NHL ready and being good in the NHL, like Zellweger in my eyes is NHL ready, but it doesnā€™t necessarily mean that it will translate immediately. So like with Drysdale you just keep helping him along, and wait. Offensive defensemen, probably have the most difficult development, you need to learn to push offense effectively Make smart plays, be aggressive and play defense effectively, positioning, strong break outs, puck retrieval. Thereā€™s a fine line between struggling and letting guys figure it out and developed and rushing kids.

Ah. Thatā€™s a fair distinction to make. I see what youā€™re saying. And I think makes more of a case to why we canā€™t lose Fowler. I know some have soured on him over the years, and heā€™s having a terrible season. But heā€™s the only guy who would make sense to be able to mentor these new offensive defensemen coming in.

I think young offensive defensemen just take long to develop. But I think you see that mintyukov and Zellweger end up being so good that you canā€™t let them waste it in Juniors. Ducks are going to have 2 defensemen of NHL quality next year, gonna he wide open on the blue line.Ā

That's interesting about specifying offensive defensemen...I mean, that's my point. They should stay in juniors longer. At this rate, OZ will have his full NHL season at the age of 20, which is still older than Fowler, Drysdale, and Lindholm. But I see what you are saying about Minty. If he's ready, he's ready. Even if he's killing it, I still think he doesn't get a full season till after next season, which would also make him 20. But he probably gets some games in.

I don't think it's a lock, but Dmen are starting younger in the NHL.Ā  That's the trend.Ā  He is crushing Juniors right now - and he crushed Juniors last season -, and he's got an NHL body. He turns 19 this November 25th, so he would basically be a 20-year-old all of next season.

Depending on how he plays now and through camp, and depending on any personnel moves they make, I could see him being in the Opening Night lineup next October.

Yeah, I guess I don't know enough around the league to see how the younger D men are doing (besides someone like Power who was a #1 OA and certainly an exception). But I look at having Fowler at an early age begin his career and everyone criticized it and continues to do so, and now it's already happening with Drysdale.

Where as Vatanen, Lindholm, Manson, Montour, Theodore didn't hit their first full regular season till 23, 19, 23, 21, 23 respectively.

So, Lindholm is the odd one out and is also a high pick, so maybe there is a good chance we see Minty next season.

My only question is: Zegras + Strome + McTavish are all centers for years to come. Where is this guy going to fit? On the fourth line? Unless the get rid of Strome.

Strome can be moved ANYWHERE. He should have the absolute lower priority of where he plays when compared to Zebras, McTavish, or Fantilli (or other top-3 pick at C). But even so, any player can be moved to wing. I think Zebras could make the most sense, he's a good distributor, but so is Terry and he's doing great at wing.

If we get Bedard though, I think we have 3 years till we end up trading Zebras or McTavish or maybe Tory Terry or someone in some blockbuster trade. If they all pan out to their ceiling, we will have so much money tied up in them, it might make more sense to do that and get something great to fill a spot that we are lacking in at the time.

What a great problem that would be to have.

-- oh whoops!! My autocorrect change Zegras to Zebras. That's pretty funny. I'm going to keep it for the humor, but acknowledging I noticed it ;)Ā

I'll tell ya who GMPV should be looking to move - AS LONG AS HE HAS A PLAN FOR A REPLACEMENT STARTING NEXT SEASON.

    Cam Fowler.

It'd be good for Cam to go to a winner, he could add a lot to a team that has it's proverbial Dehydrated Donkey Dung together, and he would probably bring back a good asset or two.Ā  GMPV might have to take on a bad contract in the short term, but Fowler has three more years left, so as long as it was less than $6.5 mil and less than 3 years it would be a "win".

The replacement could be Zellweger, or Drysdale, or Mintyukov, or a UFA or a guy they trade for, doesn't really matter, as long as he has a player to fit in Cam's slot.

Iā€™m all for this. Cam deserves better.

but we need to curb how soon we can expect Drysdale, OZ, and Minty to be regulars and effective in the line up with the NHL club. Defensemen take longer to develop, and they should. To get rid of Cam and hope one of these takes his role once gone is setting the bar way too high and the wonā€™t be able to meet it.

I donā€™t expect to see Minty as a regular till about 3 or 4 seasons from now (maybe starts getting NHL games 2 seasons from now). Drysdale is already (obviously), but still so young. And OZ I think is ready for next season (but will also be a rookie still and have some growing pains).

Yeah, I don't see anything there.Ā  I think the Ducks are simply going to be making TDL moves to acquire assets.Ā

    Ā

I just hope this is the last season of being a doormat. 5 straight seasons is enough.

There are not many exciting names in the UFA market, at least ones that make sense, so anything to improve from without - outside of a HC change - will probably have to be a trade, maybe even a draft day trade involving draft picks.

I think I am most curious about what their blueline will look like in October of 2023.Ā  That right now is very unclear.

    Ā

I guess I am a tad bit surprised that they are battling so tightly with CLB to be the doormat of the entire league.Ā  Didn't really think that was gonna be the case.Ā  Not shocked, but still.

They had better stay in the "Top 3" for the lottery.Ā  Might as well get something good for being so terrible all season.Ā  No way they get the #1 OA, so I'm crossing my fingers for #2 and I hope to God they take Fantilli.

    2. Adam Fantilli ā€” C, University of Michigan, 6-foot-2

The best way to define Fantilli is the way one USHL source once described him to me: ā€œHeā€™s a horse.ā€

Fantilli is a big, strong, powerful kid who takes pucks from the wall to the interior with force, and ease, and speed. He can beat you along the wall on the cycle. He can beat you carrying the puck in rotations around the perimeter of the offensive zone.Ā He can beat you by pushing through lanes to the middle third, driving the net, or dropping a shoulder to take space that isnā€™t there. He can beat out flying out wide. He blew me away in Calgary at Canadaā€™s summer showcase last year and he has blown me away again to start his freshman year at the University of Michigan, where heā€™s off to one of the best starts in the history of college hockey.

And even at 6-foot-2 and about 200 pounds, he might be the best skater in this draft. Itā€™s not often we see players his size who can move like him. His skating is balanced. Itā€™s powerful when it needs to be and light and adjustable when it needs to be. Within his movement patterns, he can handle the puck on a string. Heā€™s going to be a transition monster. On top of it all, heā€™s physical, heā€™s strong in the faceoff circle, he can score from mid range consistently with his low-kick wrister, heā€™s got an ability to protect the puck and shade in and out of coverage, heā€™s got a dangerous curl-and-drag wrister, and heā€™s comfortable in traffic. When heā€™s on, he can completely take over a game.

Early on in his college career, surrounded by talent with the Wolverines, he has also shed some of the selfishness and force-it plays that could frustrate me and others at lower levels (heā€™s making better decisions onĀ shot selection, overhanding less, utilizing his linemates better, etc.). Heā€™s quite likely going to play in the NHL next year and be successful on raw ability from the jump. Once he refines his game some more and adds more muscle as he ages, watch out.

I think he goes 2OA and so unlikely we will be able to get him (as that is a lottery pick, too, and we wonā€™t win either lottery). But I think GMs are going to sour a little bit on Michkov and he drops to whatever spot we are picking. Fantilli would be sick to get!

Although if we are picking 2 OA I wouldnā€™t put it past Pat to pick Michkov.

    . ā€¦ put it past Pat to pickā€¦ šŸ˜

Because it's not really free.Ā  Reilly and Zaitsev both cost money, and not a little bit of money, either.Ā  Both are signed to mid-level contracts through next season.Ā  Neither one is going to be around for the next good Ducks team.Ā  If the goal is to give kids playing time while being bad, neither one serves that purpose.Ā

If they run out of bodies, the Ducks can very easily supplement the roster at the trade deadline by making a move for an AHL veteran or 7th d-man at that time.Ā  Heck, it could even be part of the deal to get rid of Klingberg or Shattenkirk.Ā  Klingberg for a 1st and Joe Schmo,Ā Ā

As for your concerns about messaging, I share that concern.Ā  However, that message is already being sent every day Eakins remains as head coach.Ā  If Verbeek isn't concerned enough about messaging to sack Eakins, I can't imagine he's concerned about throwing Helleson or Andersson or Juolevi out there instead of picking up a guy like Zaitsev.Ā  The defense is already absurdly bad.Ā  They might as well roll with the guys they've got.

I donā€™t know if keeping Eakins is as bad of a message in the locker room as it is to the fans. For example, Terry seems to love Dallas. Sacking Eakins could be sending a different message to a player like Terry. Just a thought. Not defending keeping Eakins, also want him gone asap. But that could have an impact on Troy and maybe other young guys.

Too early to call for the dismissal of GM but I wouldn't be upset about Eakins getting sacked. I want to give Eakins another month to see how he turns it around in November. If there is no improvement, then get rid of everyone.Ā

Eakins has had 3 years to turn it around. One more month wonā€™t do anything. He doesnā€™t seem interested in changing his ways.

It's not necessarily true. Look at Ottawa, for example. 2 years ago this team was bad, a new GM signed some really good FA the last 2 summers, and now they have a potential to go really deep in the playoffs.Ā

That Ottawa team was atrocious and looked an absolute disaster of a team 5 years ago. If we want to use them as an example, they are entering the 6th year of their ā€œrebuildā€ and looking competitive. They likely will be a bubble team this year and really start pushing contention next year.

Ā We are basically a year behind them. Entering our 5th year of mediocrity, could push to be a playoff bubble next year, and begin our real contention of a playoff team the year after that, 24/25

Development being done correctly. EXGMBM rushed too many players who are now stars on other teams (wild bill, Shea Theodore, Palmieri, etc).

Beeker is a proper GM. This is an accurate timeline and process. No worries :)

Completely agree this is an accurate timeline and process.

but I think itā€™s a bit unfair to say wild bill and palmieri didnā€™t develop well under GMBM. Both showed promise and then were shipped out for trades (one terrible trade, and another that basically got us Perron and Mcginn). I think if they stayed in Anaheim they would have flourished fine.

but D on the other handā€¦.I mean, thereā€™s a good case to say Shea didnā€™t develop right under GMBM and the same for Cam, Larsson, Mahuraā€¦ could we add Vats and Montour? I dunnoā€¦probably not, they looked legit lol

I get why they are sending him back, and it will hopefully be good for him. It's the right decision, I guess.

But he could play in ANA this season. Easily. On a 3rd pair, protected, time on the PP.

    Ā

He'll play more minutes and in more meaningful situations in Everett, so that's a plus. And be with his age-group peers.

I'm also all for this decision. But I really just want to see as many of our young guys away from this coaching staff as much as possible.

(not through injury though, much rather have them in the line up than injured) Sounds like OZ really could turn into something special and we really need to be careful with how he gets developed.

I can't help but remember an interview Zegras gave last year some time where he said that Drysdale was the laziest dude.Ā  Now, I know he said it somewhat jokingly, but that stuck with me.Ā  Drysdale might just be a lazy guy who doesn't work that hard in the offseason.Ā  I hope that's not the case, and we're just seeing a guy who's a bit rusty, but I know there were some who questioned Drysdale's makeup when he was drafted.

oof, really? oh boy....I hope that can be remedied if it is indeed true. I also hope that's not the case. He's still learning...maybe he didn't realize how much training he's gotta do in the off-season.

  21. I didnā€™t have a chance to watch, but it sounds like Drysdale is suffering from over thinking from a lack of quality coaching and thus starts his dissent into not meeting expectations.

Of course I say that in jest as he is like 20 and a D and is one game in the preseason. Ā But I am not surprised that after a full year of this coaching staff he comes back looking confused. OZ hasnā€™t had them for very longā€¦he hasnā€™t had to completely take his instincts and shove them deep down into the bottom of his soul to make room for a lack of defensive structure that fights every instinct he has. But OZ is young and will be open to learning from this coaching staff just like Drysdale did. šŸ˜•

Iā€™m just saying I remember Drysdale looking amazing and promising early on and then he got a full year with Eakins. Maybe Iā€™m being too harsh on Eakins. Just really worried what damage having him another year will do to our young guysā€™ futures.

  22. Oh wow, I just saw that Fleury is only 32 wins away from passing Roy on the all-time wins list and being 2nd OA. That's insane! He could do it, too.

    Unlikely he catches Marty

    But man...those french canadian goalies...
