First cuts already. Mintyukov, Pastujov and luneau getting sent down already surprised me a bit. Thought they’d all get longer looks

I'm mostly surprised by Pastujov...Minty next surprised but I also get it...although interesting Warren didn't get cut. Luneau i understand. But Pastujov and Minty. Just yeah, seems a bit too soon.

  2. Just read the athletic article about Klingberg and I like his positive attitude and also like to see him embracing all the media and social media things like drawing the ducks logo…he seems like he’s in good spirits despite going from thinking he’d be on the Stars forever and have a huge contract to playing for a team likely to be near the bottom of the league, but on a 1-year contract.

I’m just concerned he won’t really have the ability to get his game back with Eakins behind the bench. I don’t know. We don’t have a defensive system at all and I don’t have hopes Eakins will suddenly get one this year.

it’s a fascinating year when you think about it. There’s no expectation the Ducks are a better team this year. But if Eakins doesn’t have a winning record you can basically guarantee he won’t be back. Eakins needs this team to be above .500 otherwise I don’t know how he’ll ever get another coaching job. It would be the first time in his career…yet the expectation is another bottom of the league year. 🤷‍♂️

anyway, sorry for the steam of consciousness haha it was meant to stay about Klingberg lol

  3. Nice little tidbits from Patient Verbeek about the young guys and the season etc... a little more insight. It's not so much he's just going to wait till the off-season to have ANY discussions about new contracts for Z, Terry, and Drysdale, but will hold off talks with the players themselves and not get into the nitty gritty negotiations, but will still talk with the agents. I was worried about that at first, but I do like the idea of helping motivate them to want to play for that new contract and avoid the distraction of negotiation.

Seems like he wants more speed and skill which is interesting looking at how he drafted. Draft size; trade/sign for speed and skill (and leadership).

I don't think any fanbase including the Kings, really disliked Selanne. Also I would say Selanne is an NHL legend while Getz is a Ducks legend. Getz was admired by his peers but probably not so much from all the fanbases. As mentioned, Getz didn't like the spotlight or attention at least publicly. I think very few players will get a standing ovation especially from division rival fanbases like Teemu did.

yeah also a really good point. Really shows just how Teemu transcended the barriers of fan bases in a way unlike many NHLers.

Respectfully, I was not surprised at all.  Not that Selanne is a self-aggrandizing braggart, but he's definitely a showman who doesn't mind the spotlight.  He wanted to show his appreciation for the fans around the league and didn't mind the the promotion and adulation that came with it.

Getzlaf is the exact opposite.  He probably expressed his appreciation behind the scenes, but he was not about to invite any pre-game ceremonies or mid-period video tributes to take attention for himself.  I think Getzlaf would have loathed a goodbye tour and all the extra interviews and self-promotion that would have come with it.

That's a really good point, I hadn't even thought of that. That does make a lot of sense.

MacKinnon signing for 12.6 mil per year. Hope the cap crunch is enough to start derailing them after next season but that core is still unbelievably good.

the fact that it's just a slither above McDavid's is amazing haha I think they will be fine...the only next "big guy" they need to sign is Byram who probably won't be asking for too much unless he suddenly explodes. Cap will increase. They probably will lose some of their quality depth, but they are set for a good while.

    Well, FINALLY <_< Especially Chara-lios...

At least Getz had the dignity to do it before the season ended, not after he wasn't picked up for a PTO in September.

I was actually a little bit surprised that Getz didn't do an 82-game goodbye tour like Selanne did...but Im still very grateful for him at least announcing it with plenty of time beforehand.

Bloody win one (1) game And this is our future?

I wouldn't read too much into. The results of these games don't have any correlation to how good any of these players will be whenever they end up with the big club (could be even 3 or 4 more seasons for some!). But it would be nice to win one! ;)

McTavish, Perreault and Zellweger looking like a well oiled machine on the PP

Sounding like Perrault is making a big step! That's great!

He has a well-documented concussion history. If I had to bet, teams have been scared off by that particular health issue.

Milano also had just 5G/4A in 31 games after this hit on January 4th (which caused him to miss a month of hockey), after getting 9G/16A in the previous 35 games, so it may be that he's still just not right physically due to the post-concussion issues:

Oh yes. This makes all the sense to me. That's just incredibly unfortunate. That's heartbreaking if this is what is the main issue, but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Flames have him in on a PTO

Happy to see that! I hope it goes well!

  10. I just wanted to say that it's absolutely crazy that Milano hasn't even been given a PTO contract or anything yet...like...you're telling me there are 31 teams that aren't interested in this guy AT ALL? Like, not even so much to give him a look?

There must be more to this than just his playing. Even Steel was able to sign with a team.

My preseason finalists are Beniers, Power and Nemec. If McTavish enters the convo at all then he’s ahead of schedule. He should be ripping shots and getting points from the right circle on the PP

Interesting, Nemec. Personally, I don't think Nemec makes it out of camp as an 18-year old.. Defensemen seem to get delayed a little bit.

Not to go completely off this topic but I think the finalists will be McTavish, Beniers, and Eklund. But it really is tough to ignore Powers or Johnson, too. Also if Edvinsson makes it out of camp for Detroit, they may have another calder winner next year!

I'll let myself be biased on McTavish for now ;)

MickyT is gonna be a Calder finalist next year, if not, the winner. He’s gonna get so much NHL coverage, Eakins is gonna have his hand forced by the league to play McTavish. And I’m here for it

Eakins doesn’t care. Everything I’ve seen with Dallas through interviews or quotes, he’s gonna do what he thinks is best regardless of best for PR or anything like that. The guy is stubborn in his ways. I do think we see more Z TOI but I wouldn’t be surprised to see McTavish get the Z rookie treatment. Even so, I believe McTavish will make a run for Calder.

It’s a crazy rookie year! Power, Beniers, Slakovfsky, Perfetti, Rossi, Wright, Holtz…I’m sure I’m missing some. But that’s some completion already!

I think they still had a roster.

Our 30th anniversary will be the 31st roster (and season, even if they didn't play one).  😃

that is just so confusing! haha

20 years ago Ducks celebrated their 10th Anniversary when it was 02-03 Hockey Season

did they really?? so that SHOULD mean they are doing that this season, right? that makes me a little sad as we should be a better team in 23/24

  14. 16 minutes ago, gotchabari said:

I do, too.  And this is the 30th roster.  It's not my view, it is literally the 30th roster.

is it though? I mean, technically?

There was a whole season missing in 04/05...I don't know if the roster actually counts there. So this would be the 29th roster. Which is great as the 23/24 season will be our 30th anniversary!

Yeah, maybe more than anything, the lack of desire to rush into something is what has impressed me about Verbeek.  He easily could have jumped in with both feet, signing Zegras and Terry to long-term extensions this summer at high prices to make a splash with ownership and the fanbase.  Instead, he's playing the long game.  Sure, it could cost the Ducks more in the long run if Zegras and Terry both go crazy next year, but at least then we'll have a lot more confidence that they'll perform up to the contract.

Yes! he truly has been patient. Patient Verbeek. And yeah, but if Z and Terry DO go crazy next year...and we have to pay them as such...well that's a good spot to be in!

If you've got The Athletic, an interesting piece came out today on teams that overpaid players based on ridiculously high shooting percentage seasons.  This was done in response to the Tage Thompson extension and I think it's relevant for us Ducks fans as we debate how to handle Troy Terry.

    https://theathletic.com/3559089/2022/09/02/nhl-contracts-shooting-percentage-tage-thompson/

Based on this, it looks like a really smart move to wait a while before negotiating with Terry.  He's not going to shoot at 19% every year.  It would be good to see what he settles in at next year before working on that next contract.

Oh that's a good read, thanks!

I can't imagine we give TT a similar contract...I remember when Nurse signed that ridiculous contract we were all worried about what that would mean for Lindholm, and (in my opinion) Lindholm wasn't asking for ANYTHING even close to that. And even that was too much for PV. So far what I've seen with GMPV makes me feel confident he won't be overpaying TT.

Just to add - I know I saw from at least one person that we would be upset with Bob Murray if he'd been this inactive.  Of course!  Bob Murray earned that scorn from years of mismanaging offseasons and trade deadlines.  He put together teams based on whatever whims he had after looking at the team that beat the Ducks in the playoffs.  I gave Murray a lot of rope before I turned on him for being incompetent.

Verbeek deserves a chance to show what he can do.  He hasn't done anything incredibly impressive so far, but I still feel like he's communicated that he has a plan.  I'm willing to wait it out.

I agree with this. He deserves the chance. I would have liked more action this off-season but there still is time. I wonder if he wanted to sign Josh Manson. But the fact that Josh re-signed before hitting UFA status Patty never had the chance.

Gotta Question for you My Fellow Ducks Fans Friends and Brethren. What do you think about Ducks Bringing Josh Manson Back?.

    MooseDuck

I like the idea. We need defense. I think the players like him and I really like the idea of signing back a player we traded. We basically got a promising prospect and a pick for being slightly worse to get a higher draft pick and a player went out to get championship experience.

I agree with you that Gibson would bring a good return IF he had less term on his contract and less annual salary.

All goaltenders that you and some other people mentioned here, they had either expiring contracts or few years left on it. In Gibson case, he has 5 years remaining with $6.5 mil per season. This make it difficult to move, agree?

P.S. Remember BM attempt to move last season 20+ goal scorer Henrique?

Yeah, but no team has a need for 31 year-old 20 goal scorer at that cost for another 3 years. Especially with the cap situation as it was in 2021. I would argue that goalies you want to put more money into. It’s a better use of percentage of cap per position. So it’s difficult to compare. Goalies tend to have an immediate impact on teams and effect the outcome of games much more frequently and individually. And particularly skilled goalies are capable of going further into their 30s I would say and still have that immediate impact.

Gibson would have an immediate, positive effect on any team floundering in net right now. And would for another 3 years (arguably more). So it’s a better use of cap space. More valuable to a team.

Where as Henrique arguably would not. Could. Maybe. But much higher risk with not as much of a reward.

I really love that Carrick got an extension. He's one a few grit guys on the team that can put up some good points. That said, I'm not happy with the contract. I think he deserved more than a meager 850k and only two years. With the contracts that some of the other players that been mentioned, Larson, Curran and so on have with a team that is miles below the cap floor, why shortchange Carrick?

I think this is because this is Patty’s team now and he probably wouldn’t have signed those players to those contracts. Clearly, based off of the negotiations with Lindholm, he doesn’t want to sign players for much money. There’s an argument to be made he’s lowballing these players.
