Hasn't helped our guys yet. Eakins probably sends Instagram and Twitter messages on what they need to do on the ice.... secretly of course....🤫😂

We haven't played any games yet.

Two guys I’m gonna keep on eye on are Strome and Jones. I’d really love if Max Jones can take a step, at this point it’s slim, but man there was a few games last season in a row where he looked dominant. And Strome is really important that he rebounds as they’re spending a lot of money on him for awhile. I like him as a player, but think he needs the right set up. I wonder if we ever see

    Zegras - Carlsson - Strome

let’s you spread some offense with Terry and McTavish, Strome played his best as a complimentary piece for elite players.

I agree that Strome definitely needs the right line to succeed, but I'm not sure about sticking him with two other playmakers. I like the idea of putting him with McTavish and either Killorn or Henrique on the left side.

A guy like Zach Aston-Reese who I believe plays that style of game that Cronin says he wants, would have been cheaper and only for one year. Johnston is the kind of acquisition that we roasted Murray for. If he was only for one season then it might be ok but 3?

He averages 19 games a year and less than 10 minutes a game. He's just a plug until Carlsson and Killorn get back? So for the less than 10 minutes he plays, I hope he lays down some hits for that $1.1M and stays out of the penalty box in the process.

Johnston was the type of acquisition that we roasted Murray for because the Ducks needed every dollar to acquire actual good players who could help them go from very good team to great team.  Instead, Murray picked off the scrap heap, which meant that the Ducks spent every season as a two-line team in the playoffs.

Johnston doesn't matter to the current version of the Ducks.  I don't like him as a player and don't think he'll be at all useful on the ice, but apparently he's a good leader, and I do think these Ducks need some solid personalities in the dressing room.  His money can be buried in the minors, so he doesn't affect the cap ever.  Whether that $1.1 million could have been spent more effectively to win more hockey games, not really.  Or at least not this season.  Maybe Aston-Reese helps you win one additional game?  So the Ducks wind up with 71 points instead of 69.  I would hope that, next season or the season after, if the Ducks are looking to make a playoff run, this money won't stop them from picking up a player who matters.  If it does, then that will be a problem.  I'm not worried about it at this point.

Carlsson is only supposed to be out for 3 games. Three games then send Nesterenko back down. Johnston isn't a full time player anyway. He a 2 PPG player. not points, penalties. Unless its a major for fighting, he's going to put your team on the PK. He's also signed for the next 3 years. He must have doubled as Godfather Lou's bodyguard in New York to get $1.1M per year.

Far be it from me to defend a player like Johnston who doesn't really play hockey.  But this isn't accurate.  In 16 games last season, he only had three penalties that put his team down a man.  All his others were fights or even-up stuff.  The season before, in 32 games, he also only had three penalties that put his team on the PK.

He's a guy who, like Peter Cetera, will fight for your honor.  He's not a cheapshot artist or a guy who's taking a bunch of dumb, hotheaded penalties.

  5. Sigh.  Apparently the ghost of Bob Murray still haunts the building.  Ultimately, who cares, since it's a low dollar amount and it's not like he's blocking anyone on the 4th line.  But still, we need more forwards who know how to use a hockey stick.

I'm not so sure about the bolded. I think he's more likely to be centering Vatrano and Silf if/when we have a healthy line up with Killorn and Carlsson back. They did start training camp with him at center. I think that was intentional.

And btw, I don't consider Vatrano a legit top-6 player. IMO he's a middle-6 winger who is better suited as a 3rd liner on a good team.

I guess I disagree on Vatrano.  I think he's a solid 2nd line winger.  I think a Henrique-Vatrano-??? will be fine.  Put McGinn over there if you want and have a nice checking line that can also score a few goals.  I don't see that as misusing Henrique at this stage of his career.

Rico has been a good solider for this team through some pretty trying times, and apparently his reward is to watch Brett freaking Leason get top-line minutes on LW with Zegras/Terry while he's dragging Silfverberg around as a boat anchor and trying to mentor a career-AHLer to be a 3rd line center. Of course he'll be alright. He's a pro. But that's gotta make him a little hot under the collar after speaking out publicly last season about this team's need for better players.

Here's basically how this has gone down for him:

Reporter: What does this team need in order to improve next season?

Rico: We need better players. Having all these AHLers in the lineup isn't working.

Cronin: Adam, we're going to give Brett Leason a shot on the top line with our two best players. Here, you can play 3rd line minutes with Silfverberg and Groulx.

    <_<

As you said, he's a pro.  There's no reason for him to be upset about being asked to carry a line.  Cronin is trying to distribute talent throughout the lineup.  If Leason were on that third line, the Ducks' bottom two lines would be the worst in the NHL.  As it is, maybe Zegras can bank some goals in off of Leason, and maybe Henrique can help that third line at least not give up any goals.

This is temporary anyway.  Once Carlsson and Killorn are back, Henrique will be playing with at least one legitimate top 6 player.

Dang. Dahlin got 8 years at 11 mil aav. Just need to lock up Owen Power and they have a good looking core.

Zach Benson might make their opening roster and has been lighting up preseason. Future is getting really bright in Buffalo.

I'm definitely rooting for Buffalo in the East.  They deserve some success after this long drought.

  9. The plan is to get players to compete for jobs.  Every team does this.  Verbeek has a bunch of young players who have played well enough to earn roles with the NHL team over veterans.  How is that a bad thing?  Or any sort of evidence that there isn't a plan?

Bob Murray was criticized for his dumpster diving moves because he made those moves at a time when the Ducks were legitimately good and needed one more piece to be a true Stanley Cup contender.  Instead, Murray tinkered at the edges of the lineup, trying to find gold by digging in a trash heap.

Verbeek is trying to build a team through the draft with youth and by adding some veteran leadership through free agency.  His waiver wire pickups are intended only as placeholders until the youth is ready.  If the youth is ready earlier than projected, then the waiver wire pickups get sent packing.  I'm not sure why this should bother anyone.  The Ducks have not lost anything of value by waiving those three guys.  If anything, we should be happy that Verbeek is committed to playing whoever earns a spot in the lineup, even it means dumping guys he picked up.

Man, looking at that lineup, how can you not feel bad for Henrique?

Do you think he texted his trade demand to his agent right after practice, or did he wait until he got home?

The Ducks have two top six pieces out of the lineup.  At this point, Henrique should be somewhere in the middle six playing a strong two-way game.  He'll be alright.

  11. I just watched some of the Gulls-Reign preseason game. While I'm bummed Zellweger isn't staying up, I suppose I can wait. And the Gulls desperately need his dynamic skating ability and offensive skillset. They looked anemic. Tracey is about done as a prospect.

Now that preseason is in the books…

Predictions for the Ducks record, anyone?

I’m going with 32-41-9. 73 points. 5th in the Pacific. 29th in the NHL.

I think that sounds about right. I think they're going to start very slowly (like 2-9-1) and then be just run of the mill bad for a while before coming on with a decent stretch to end the season. I'd go with 31-44-7 for 69 points, probably 30th in the NHL, in front of San Jose and Montreal.

Here is the 1st post in this thread.  It has absolutely nothing to do with whether Zegras & Drysdale would be signed.

As the title says worst GM in Ducks history. From questionable trades to questionable free agent signing to questionable waive pick ups and coaching hires and then still thinking he has a playoff team when anyone with a brain can see how poorly they are built. And handing out bad contracts to Vatrano and Strome just to meet the cap floor. This guy has got to go sooner rather then later. The Ducks were still somewhat respectable when he took over. Not anymore and especially not with that ugly winking duck jersey. Just wait until Gibson and Henrique get traded this year for 3rd and 4th round picks and a B or C prospect. Other GMs know that Verbeek has no clue what he is doing. In interviews he sounds like he has no clue what he is doing and he is being fleeced in every move. Im not even sure he would have been smart enough to pick Bedard if he had 1OA. Time to move on before the Ducks have 5 last place finishes to go with thise 5 division titles.

It's just as unproven and speculative now as it was then.

He's done well in pre-season. I honestly don't think he's ready though. First game is against Vegas. Next night it's against Carolina. Four nights later it's Dallas. I really don't want to put a 19yr old defenseman out there on back to back nights. Besides that, I don't even think the team is ready.

To be honest, I'm not convinced either, or at least not nearly as much as I am about Carlsson. I'm fine if Mintyukov goes down. I was really hoping Zellweger would make the team, and I still think he'd be ok up there, but I understand why they might send him down.

My point is more theoretical. If Mintyukov is clearly ready, I don't want to manipulate his service time. If there's an argument that he's not ready, then I'm fine giving him to SD.

  15. 14 minutes ago, dtsdlaw said:

^^ I'd still like it if Mintyukov's ELC could slide for another season. It'd be one thing if the choice was between juniors and the NHL, but since he's AHL eligible I'd be 100% fine with him spending the whole season in San Diego (where I could watch him in person too).

As long as we're using the CBA as Thor's hammer on our best prospects, might as well just slide his ELC for another season and keep him another year away from arbitration and UFA, right?

Not if he's ready to be in the NHL.  If he's ready, let him play.

Not a good game, but there were some positives - Carlsson, Zegras, Terry, LaCombe, Mintyukov, Lyubushkin

Would like to see them be as physical as they were in the first few preseason games, but the personnel may not necessarily lend itself to that.  Still too much room for the opponent in the breakout/neutral zone.  They need to buy in more to the "hunting" mindset, get after pucks.  Saw it in the first and third.

I hope the top line stays together for an extended stretch to see what they can do.

I think I'd rather see Henrique/McTavish/Vatrano on the second line than any other combo.

I'm curious to see how many games Gibson gets in the first 20 or so.  He is still the victim of goals via blown coverage, but he is also looking VERY mediocre on some goals that he should not be allowing.  That first goal was a terrible turnover by Thomson and a completely disengaged and asleep Gibson.  Does he stop it even if he is fully focused?  No way to know, because he was out to lunch.

    A couple of things here:

    • I think Strome on the third line without offensively talented players around him is basically lighting money on fire.  He succeeded in New York when he was paired with a dynamic offensive player in Panarin.  We don't have anyone at that level, but I think Strome, as a pass-first guy, could succeed alongside McTavish and a scoring winger like Killorn (or even Zegras).  Relegating him to 3C duties might be what he deserves, but I think the Ducks get nothing from him at that point.  I'd rather see Henrique there since Henrique can actually play defense.
    • I got on Sexlaf last night in the game thread about the Gibson criticism.  I don't take back what I said, but I'll tone down my defense of Gibson a bit.  I thought he was victimized by some bad defense, but it's also true that he looks checked out at times.  That first goal happened when a guy skating by the crease knocked Gibson's stick out of his hands accidentally.  There was no urgency to Gibson picking it up.  To be fair, he probably wasn't thinking that his d-man would just turn the puck over immediately, but his compete level was pretty low on that play.  And even Cronin had no idea why Gibson left the game, which isn't a great sign.  So while I still think Gibson can be good behind a better defense and in a better system, I'm a lot less sure than I was before.  Even in past seasons when the Ducks were garbage, Gibson came out in the opening weeks and was pretty incredible.  Maybe this is just preseason malaise, but I'm a bit worried.  The first 20 games will be very telling.

Carlsson by far has been the best player on the ice I think.

Yeah, he looked very good.  He couldn't bury a couple of chances, but the goals will come.

Also, he blew by a couple of guys with some good first strides.  I'm not worried about his skating.
