It's disappointing to me because I think Hakanpaa was a solid 3rd pair guy who had the ability to slide into a 2nd pair role when the Ducks inevitably start losing defensemen to injury, which they do each and every season. Fowler also played pretty well with him, which has been the opposite of what we've seen from Fowler when he's paired with Manson. I agree that Hakanpaa shouldn't be getting 21 mins/game, but you don't pay anything less than $3M/season for a UFA that is going to play 21 minutes. I would have been very happy if the Ducks had brought him back in the $1.75M-$2M range for 15-16 minutes per game, especially with Manson being a pending UFA at season's end and possibly on the trade block.

Speaking of $3M 3rd pair D-men, I'm old enough to remember Bob Murray giving Bryan Allen 3 x $3.5M during the 2012 offseason after we finished as the 6th worst team in the NHL (against a $70.2M cap, btw). Doesn't seem like a stretch that we could have given Hakanpaa 3 x $1.75M against an $81.5M cap this summer when we still have $18M+ in cap space.

Ahh yes the times we had a few big stiff overpaid defenseman Allen-Souray-Stoner.  Good times.  Agree that Hakanpaa for the right price would have been nice to bring back.

  2. It's well known I am no BM fan and have criticized him constantly for trying to make a team led by Getzy and Perry to a "faster" team.  It's led us to where we are today, a disaster.  He should have been fired for what he did to the team.  But if we're stuck with him....at least he's off this crazy notion of speed, speed, speed at any cost.  I like the McTavish pick a lot now.

  3. Anybody catch this?  Couple big things I took away from it was that Bob doesn't appeared to be interested in free agency much and all but said we will be making a trade of some sort.  Secondly and most importantly....Bob realizes we have to get back to our old identity.  That was music to my ears!!!  Get some heart and pride back!

Mahura is a not an effective defender and IMO we need a solid SAH defender to play with Drysdale on the 3rd pair. I'd rather pay for a veteran 3rd pair LHD in free agency who can bring Drysdale along. Bring in someone like Hjalmarsson or Jordie Benn. Mahura needs to be traded to give him a fresh start somewhere else.

I agree with you.  I've seen enough of Mahura to feel the same way you do.

I still don't buy that you need guys to protect anyone any more.  Dirty players are going to play dirty regardless of the number of "enforcers" you employ.  It's not like Deslauriers will ever be out there on the ice with Zegras (I hope).  These aren't the 80's and 90's when tough guys would actually make guys pay for their cheap shots and the league was okay with it.

Deslauriers seems like a good dude, and he's not completely useless.  But he's also not helping score goals.

I agree with you but...we fans like to see retribution if one of our younger guys is being abused.  ND serves that roll and like we've said he's not totally useless beyond that.

I'm still trying to get over the shock that WE want Deslauriers, much less that other GMs might want him enough to trade an actually good player for him.

I see why teams would want ND, low salary, better than average skillz for an enforcer.  You need guys like him to protect your young skill guys, like Zegras for example.  Protectable?  Not sure I get that but we have so many players on our roster that are expendable....why not?

Of those names to me Jones has the most upside.  At least he plays with heart, is young and drive the nets.  I wouldn't give you a bag of pucks for  Rico & Silf,

I agree with you on Jones.  I give Silf the benefit of the doubt playing injured last year.  Rico and that contract can go.  I've lost faith in Steele too.

Because he's still a good player. He plays all three forward positions and is a solid defender too. Just because Eakins scratched him doesn't mean he should have been scratched (see: Adam Henrique, David Backes).

Yea not seeing Danton Heinen being a protectable player in any way shape or form.  Seattle wants him, they can have him.  I'll even go out on a limb and guarantee Danton Heinen will not be protected (Sonny Milano as well).

Eric Stephens reporting in the Athletic re Solomon: "In addition to being the lead when it comes to managing the Ducks' cap and budget, he'll also handle contract and arbitration negotiations. Those and the CBA were among his duties with L.A."

Interesting note about handling arbitration negotiations. A couple of guys speculated to be on the trade block who are RFAs and are arbitration eligible: Laine and Reinhart.

Too funny just read this article.  Back in the late 90's early 2000s they guy behind us that had season seats was good friends with "Solly" and we were introduced to him and saw him at several Ducks games over the years.  He was never a big fan of the Ducks organization back then but then again it was Disney owned...understandable.

Elliotte Friedman mentioned on his 31 Thoughts podcast that he thinks Bob may have not made a lot of trades at the deadline because he’s holding onto players to do a big trade this summer. I wonder what kind of player Manson/Rakell + the #2 overall would get us in a flat cap world?

Ha!  I was just talking about the same thing and with the same two people you listed + the draft pick with a friend yesterday.  Too funny.

For the upcoming draft Seattle will be slotted as if they finished with the 3rd worst record.  So the difference between finishing with the 3rd worst record, as the Ducks currently have, and the 2nd worst record is huge.  Odds of having a top 3 pick would increase from 19.6% to 55.5% if the Ducks fell behind New Jersey or Buffalo in the standings.

    http://www.tankathon.com/nhl/pick_odds

I know this year's draft is more muddled as to who are the top prospects because of the Covid disruption of the junior leagues, but I would still much rather have our scouts picking in the top 3 than 5th or 6th, which is likely to be the case if the current standings hold.  Also, because it's more likely that good prospects are going to fall to later rounds due to the Covid disruption, the picks in the 2nd through 7th round become more important.  I'm not sure, but I believe finishing with the 2nd worst record would have the Ducks picking 2 spots earlier in each of those rounds compared to if they finish 3rd worst.

So for the first time I am going to hope the Ducks lose as many of the remaining games as possible, preferably in regulation.  I have heard the arguments that we shouldn't hope for the Ducks to tank because it creates a losing culture, but the Ducks finished strong each of the past 2 seasons and still played awful in the subsequent seasons.  In short, i don't think winning any or all of the remaining 9 games will make a damn bit of difference to the Ducks' culture going forward.  But losing them could significantly help their future.

So let's go Devils, Sabres, Blue Jackets, and Senators.  And please lose Ducks.

Sadly...we just aren't good.  But Jersey and Columbus are in full tank mode.  Kings have started too IMO.
