Eric Stephens put out a fantastic article on Zegras.

Zegras opened the season with a lesser grade of the same groin injury that kept Couture out pretty much all season. Pretty impressive his defense was as good as it was.

“That’s a bit of a grind to go through,” Zegras said. “For hockey players, your groins are obviously very important. And I don’t want to say breaking my ankle was a blessing in disguise, but it gave me time to fully recover on the groin front. I’d say now it’s probably the closest I’ve felt to 100 percent. I’d say it’s a pretty good feeling.“

Zegras identified this season as the most adversity he’s ever gone through. Kind of general hockey player quotes of “controlling what I can control” stuff.

he did have a interesting quote at the end of the article:

“Obviously, it’s very exciting,” he said. “All these guys are great hockey players. I feel like they’re all around that age, 20 to 24. Nineteen, some of them. If my role is to be a leader and help, try and work on that. If my role is to pass the puck to Leo and let him do his thing, that’s the role I’ll play.”

it’s pretty clear he’s getting pushed so hard to be a leader for this team. Maybe contradicts the idea that management doesn’t want him. article has an interesting tone, but I stand by that it’s clear the ducks should not trade him. He’s a vital piece to this team.

I think this quote is the most interesting:

“It was at the end of summer that Zegras estimates that he began to feel something wrong. Add in missing camp and most of the preseason as his camp and the Ducks slogged away toward a three-year bridge extension worth $17.25 million, and the injury worsened as he tried to play catch-up with his teammates.

“I started feeling some stuff,” he said. “Didn’t really know what it is. Kind of when I got back on the ice. Just skating. Might have ramped it up a little too quick or something. I didn’t take care of it like I should have and maybe been on top of it. Obviously coming back into training camp is a whole different animal. These guys are playing at a different pace than you skate in summer so that probably didn’t help too much.”

We all speculated that his lack of training camp caused the groin injury, but it seems he had it before training camp and wasn’t smart about it.

If they take Silayev or Dickinson, then either a) zellweger likely gets dealt at some point or b) someone is playing on their offside. Theres too much of a logjam on LHD with Lacombe and possibly hinds. Verbeek will likely want to see what 6’6 Konnor smith can do next season in SD.

I think LaCombe could be the odd man out instead of Zellweger at the moment. Verbeek does love size, especially on defense, but carrying one smaller defenseman wouldn’t be a big deal. Zellweger’s looked like the real deal since scoring his 1st goal. I also think if we take a LHD he’ll move slower through the system unless he’s dominating the AHL and forces a decision. Even that could be 3 years out. Dickinson for example doesn’t turn 18 until June, so he’ll spend 2 more years in the OHL. A lot can happen after all that time.

Agree with you that Verbeek has to overpay to lure good players to Anaheim. My point is: I would rather overpay to proven, prolific scorer, someone like 26 y/o Kevin Fiala at the pick of his career, whom Hollywood team got for late 1st round pick + some meah prospect.

That prospect has 7 goals and 45 points in his rookie season as a right shot defenseman.  He’d be the Kings 2nd best defenseman right now.

  4. Here’s a fun thought exercise. Odds are we won’t win the 1st overall pick in the lottery, but if we did and Chicago drops to 3rd, who ends up being happier about the lottery over the last two years - the Ducks with Carlsson and Celebrini, or Chicago with Bedard and whoever is available at #3? Carlsson and Celebrini probably don’t end up as good as Bedard, but this years #3 pick could be a decent level below what Carlsson and Celebrini end up being. I think there’s a decent chance the Ducks come out ahead in this scenario.

Fowler is 6' 2" and listed at 214lbs. So he's "big" but one of the softest bunnies in the field.

LaCombe also... 6' 2" and listed at 204lbs. Big but not physical.

Vaakanainen also... 6' 2" and listed at 196 (probably wrong). Height but not really physical.

Physicality and size are two different things.

That’s exactly my point with Gudas and Parekh. It doesn’t make sense to compare them because Parekh doesn’t play a physical game. So them being the same size not only is irrelevant, it’s also a minus for Parekh because it’s two strikes against him - 1 strike for being smaller, and 1 strike for playing on the softer side.

Gudas isn't "big" but he plays big. Matter of fact, Gudas and Parekh are listed at the same height so you basically already have Zellweger and a "smaller" defenseman in Gudas already in the line-up.

Gudas and Parekh aren’t anywhere close to the same type of player. Physicality is Gudas’ brand of hockey; Parekh doesn’t have a physical bone in his body. It’s not the way he plays.

The size issue is being a little overblown. If it were about size, Zellweger wouldn't be here and Verbeek wouldn't have made a trade to get Ben Meyers. If it was purely about size then Silayev would be his first choice in this draft. We are also under the presumption that he will pick a defenseman. In last years draft, it was pretty easy when it came to the choices while this years, not so much.

I think size matters more for defensemen than forwards. I remember Verbeek talking about it at one point saying we needed more size there. I think Zellweger being in the lineup actually helps that argument because Verbeek’s already carrying one offensive minded smaller defensemen. I’d be surprised if he wanted two.

I’m assuming that we’ll drop back to #4 after the ping pong balls get pulled. At that point, I think Leshunov is off the board (he might be gone at #2) which then puts us in an interesting position. I’d take the upside of Eiserman followed by lindstrom but don’t think Verbeek will.

if Verbeek is thirsty for a RHD prospect then I think he takes Parekh at #4 which would be the first curveball of the draft. Can’t rule out he doesn’t have Yakemchuk on his board either. At forward, I think he values Helenius and lindstrom.

such a hard draft to pin down.

I’d be surprised if the Ducks took Parekh that high. He doesn’t seem like a Verbeek type of player. He’s on the smaller end for a defenseman, and his compete level defensively sometimes isn’t there. Even when it is, he’s not a guy who engages physically. I think with a pick that high he’s going to have plenty of other options he likes more. Never know though.

  9. Locked up #3 lottery odds. That’s probably where we’ll finish. Chicago is in reach and have a game in hand but their final stretch is brutal. I don’t even think it’s a big deal if we were to drop from #3 to #5 in this draft, at least as of now. The only player ranked #2-5 that I have any confidence in being thought of  around the league as a consensus top 3 pick is Levshunov, and he might not make it past #2. So if the Ducks feel that way about him then we probably can’t afford to fall back and have a chance at him. Other than that, I think there’s going to be a lot of differing opinions on the top ranked guys.

One thing I hope to see is Eiserman destroying the U18 World’s just to see what that will do to his draft stock. It’s been down all season, but that would open up some fun conversation leading up to the draft.

No single team can advance in the draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two times in any five-year period. This limitation will not affect a team’s ability to retain its presumptive draft position in any Draft Lottery, nor would it preclude the possibility of the team moving down in draft order to the extent other teams advance by reason of winning the Lottery Draws.

Yep, this is what I read. It’s all about advancing, not winning draws. You could theoretically draft #1 5 years in a row if you finished the regular season last 5 straight years and won the lottery for the 1st pick each time, because you did not advance in the draft order. You merely held your position.

Any word on Colangelo? I know his team was eliminated but they can still be invited to the tournament

They made the tournament. Matchups get announced in about 3 hours. It’s single elimination and the tournament starts on Thursday so it’s possible his college season ends either Thursday or Friday.

    Celebrini

    Demidov

    Lindstrom

    Levshunov

    Are my picks in order

I’m curious what will happen with Lindstrom. Maybe he’s about to return and he’ll play in the playoffs or at the U18’s in a few months, but right now he only has half a season playing at the level of a top pick. I don’t know if it’ll have any effect, but it’ll be interesting to see. Demidov is probably my #2 at the moment as well.

I don't see why he should be a dark horse though. Kid has 90 freakin points in the OHL. As a comparison, Mintyukov (OHL) had 62 points in his draft year and Korchinski (WHL) had 65 points in his draft year (both 2022). In the 2022 draft, one of the complaints about Nemec was his defensive game yet he was the #2OA pick. For a team like Anaheim who is starving for scoring from the back-end, Parekh checks all the boxes.

Have you actually watched a full game of his and not just highlights? I watched one of his games a month or so ago and his defense was atrocious. Not only lacking in the fundamentals, but also in effort. He played like he was a 4th forward not a defenseman. If he doesn’t take a huge development step in his defensive game then you’re essentially hoping he becomes the next Mike Green. If he’s not that good offensively at the NHL level then he’s probably going to bust. It would be a risky pick.

Oh, boy.  This kid is giving off great vibes.

This was his best play of the game. Should be a fun one tomorrow in the finals vs Celebrini and Boston. For those wondering, even if BC loses they’ll still be going to the NCAA tournament.

    Thanks for posting.

Fisix didn’t post the context behind Luneau when he mentioned him, and I think it’s important. Starts at 45:27:

“Luneau will probably step into the lineup next year and be a full time player.”

That line says that Verbeek doesn’t think Luneau will have any issue getting over his infection from earlier this year, and he thinks he’s going to be one of the RD’s next year. So that potentially leaves one spot open on that side, and zero spots if he’s fine with a lefty there. Make of that what you will, but no matter what it’s a great update for Luneau’s health that some were concerned about.

If both reports are true, this report along with the report stating the hold up was a first round pick, deal could be more possible than  thought

Kaplan is pretty reliable. I’m glad the Rangers didn’t do that deal because it’s bad for the Ducks. Henrique on his own got a 1st rounder, so this trade is essentially Kakko for Vatrano straight up. Absolutely not. The guy has had 1 good season in 5, and his best season (last year) was still just good for a 3rd liner on a playoff team.

I’d do Kakko and a 1st for Vatrano, but I’m thinking the Rangers aren’t going to pay more for less than what they turned down a few weeks ago.

We could very much finish with the 6th worst record and draft 7th. Chicago and SJ are the bottom two and we can easily surpass CBJ, Arizona and Ottawa. Would be a pretty awful note to end on

I’m not concerned about this right now. I’m not seeing much difference between drafting 4th or drafting 7th. There looks to be a steep drop off after #1, and not too much of a difference between guys who could go #2 and later in the top 10. That’s as of now; it’s possible in the remaining few months and especially at the U18 worlds a top 5 could be solidified. Compared to last year we knew at this time that the top 5 was already written in stone.

If we get Zegras, Carlsson, McTavish and Terry playing together and finishing strong, along with Zellweger, Mintyukov and LaCombe doing well too that’s worth falling from a few spots in this draft.

Well I think Verbeek has waited far too ling on Henrique. Should have pounced on a trade after Monahan went for a first. Now Tarasenko only goes for a 4th and 3rd. I cant see Verbeek getting a 1st let alone a 2nd anymore for Henrique.

    Nice call.

I think because Vatrano wouldn't cost them a 1st round pick.

There's still a good case for Henrique to go to Vegas, Colorado or Boston.

What makes you assume that? Vatrano has more value than Henrique, and Henrique should bring back a 1st.

  20. 2 hours ago, Sexlaf15 said:

That Kakko and a 1st round pick for Rico and Frank is gonna hit so good

Henrique on his own should bring back a 1st. Vatrano should bring back a 1st +, and that plus is more than just a throwaway. That would essentially be trading a 1st + for Kakko, and I think that’s a big overpay.
