The NHL needs to get rid of that weak every team gets an all-star rule already. Talk about participation ribbons. There's no reason for teams like Seattle or Arizona to be represented considering the product they've barfed onto the ice this season. Even though I'd generally rather see our guys get rest over an ASG nod, this is the kind of year where it would've been really neat for a youngster like Terry to get that sort of recognition for his efforts. I mean, Timo Meier and Adrian Kantskate? Is it supposed to be an All-Star game or synchronized diving?

Honestly I think it's a joke they're even proceeding with the ASG when they continue to postpone real games.

Hey, I have a great idea. Let's get at least one player from each team in one place, then send them all back to their teams! Nothing could go wrong!

Yeah, according to marek. Makes no sense unless they are planning to move out pending UFAs to help offset the cost though, imo. AZ is asking for a first round pick, high-end prospect and a young player. I’m not moving McTavish, Perreault or Zellweger

The speculation is that the Ducks are in on Chychrun because they are expecting to lose Lindholm in UFA.

  3. Well after being awarded just 3 power plays in 2 games, last night we got 4. One of which ended after 30 seconds and one of which was due to a bad review by Philly. But still, those 2 games against Vegas and Colorado were certainly frustrating as the refs decided only one team in each game deserved any penalties.

4/7 on the PP over the last 3 games by the way, without Getzy for 2 games and Zegras for all of them.

You're going to have to show me data that says that over 60% of people vaccinated do not get the virus let alone 80-90%.  That does not seem to follow ANYTHING that is being reported right now.

I'm vaccinated.  Just got my test back.  Positive. Felt like a common cold.  Little headache, a little sneezing and runny nose, felt a little run-down for a day or two.  Lost sense of taste and smell completely.

I think the main purpose of the vaccines are to prevent severe outcomes - so you felt like you had a cold instead of something worse. The vaccines don't seem to be doing much, if anything, to actually prevent infection, especially with the Omicron variant.

US to miss next world juniors game due to Covid protocols.

World Juniors are over due to Covid.

    Crazy stuff.

Sounds like all the Ducks that have tested positive are asymptomatic so hopefully nothing to worry about long term. I speculate that when Silf went on Covid protocol early in the season he was sick with Covid, as it seems like he is not 100% since then. Maybe he is having some lingering symptoms. Nothing behind this, just a theory.

The Olympics are no more for NHL players.  I'm glad the Ducks are playing well this season, otherwise I would be EXTREMELY upset about this.  I love the Olympic hockey tournament when the best in the world are playing.  As it is, this just falls into the giant bucket of disappointment that the last two years have been dealing with COVID.

Admittedly, I count myself blessed not to have had to deal with tragedy, as so many others have.  Being bummed about missing sports is hardly up there on the scale of things to worry about.  But it's not nothing, either, and I feel for guys like Stamkos (and possibly our own John Gibson) who might not ever get the chance to play in the Olympics.

Hopefully Covid is over in the next 2 years and they can play a World Cup or something. It's not the same though. 2 straight years without NHL players at the Olympics is pretty lame.

I hope so, but then you get a Keystone Cops mess like last night and wonder.

They played maybe their best defensive game of the season on Wednesday night, then played one of their worst last night. It happens, I won't be getting too upset over one game.

The idea is that they'd use those 3 weeks as a mixture of break and catch-up for teams that postponed games due to covid.

3 more teams have games postponed through Christmas now (Anaheim obviously caught up in that too since they were meant to play Calgary next week). They have also postponed the Montreal-Boston game that was to be played tomorrow, and it sounds like more Boston games will be postponed. So at this rate there might be quite a few games to catch up on come February.

At this point I don't see them going to the Olympics.

Seeing the NHL might go into A Pause nooooooooooooooooooooo!

Anaheim vs flames postponed for sure

Flames, Panthers, Avs games all postponed until after Christmas.

Hmmm, I'm sure they will be doing everything possible to avoid a pause. There are teams like Anaheim that have no players currently in Covid protocol that should be able to keep playing. The thought will be that this is going to be with us for a long time, and they can't just pause the season every year.

I don't follow the NFL but my understanding is that they will now allow positive players to play provided their viral load is low, meaning they are not really contagious. It's also my understanding that many of the NHL players that have been on the Covid list this year have been asymptomatic, and they felt they could have played, so there's a growing sentiment that they should just stop testing on a regular basis, and only test if the player has symptoms.

i really don't think any player with a decent salary is going to risk going.  i would make a small bet that Gibby won't want to go.  there might be some younger players under entry contracts that'll be willing to go and risk the 3-5 week quarantine... and i think some spots will be open for younger players and others not normally considered, but man, things are looking pretty scary right now.

Yeah, I don't think any NHL players will go if there is a 3-5 week quarantine requirement. However, hockey is one of the biggest events at the Winter Olympics, and China want this event to be a success, so I could see them waiving this requirement for athletes. We will see what happens.

If they don't go I wonder if the NHL will change the schedule, otherwise they just have a 3 week gap with all players sitting at home.

First in the pacific yes, but everyone else seems to have 2-3 games in hand on us atm. This season so far has been refreshing to say the least.I’ll be pretty happy with whatever the outcome this season.

I usually look at points percentage instead of actual standings, and Anaheim is still second in the Pacific on points percentage.

season has a long way to go and we've been very lucky with D injuries....im excited as anyone else is! But I still think we are a bubble team and wouldn't be surprsied to see some fall off as the season comes to an end....just out of a lot of these young guys maybe losing some steam as they play a full 82-season that is very condensed...

But super curious to see what Solomon does at the TDL.........especially if we are still deciedly in a playoff spot....

The Olympic break could do us a big favor. How many of our guys are going to the Olympics? Gibby for the USA. Lindholm and Rakell for Sweden probably. I think that might be it. The rest of our players get to rest and relax for a few weeks before the stretch run.

Every single player was above 50% in expected goals last night.  That was the best defensive effort I've seen from the Ducks in a long time.

They were very clinical. I know it's only Seattle but they have beaten some good teams this season.

Milano, wow. His back checking was fantastic. He's gone from a guy that offered nothing on defense to the guy that's first man back supporting the defensemen.

The max I would offer Rakell is 5 x $5.5M with some trade protection (like a 10-team NTC) or a 4 x $6M with a full NMC for the first 3 years and a 12-team NTC in year 4.

I basically agree. I was thinking 5 x $5.25M would be fair for Rakell. If Anaheim can get him in that ballpark I think that's a good contract for both parties.

It feels great knowing we have a high chance of winning with both goalies! If one gets hurt we know the other is going to step up! As a fan it’s a great feeling having that confidence in our back up!

Stolarz is a great backup, it's a perfect role for him IMO. But he's kinda like Koskinen in Edmonton - the more he plays, the more he will get exposed as an NHL starter. Hopefully Gibby's injury isn't too bad.

I still have no idea who will start for the USA at the Olympics. Gibson and Hellebucyk have almost identical stats:

    Gibson: 11-7-4, .918sv, 2.57GAA, 1 SO

    Hellebucyk: 10-7-4, .917sv, 2.64GAA, 1 SO

I don't know, why do we need that role?  It doesn't draw new fans (in fact, they're probably turned off by that kind of thing).  It just makes current fans frustrated.  I'd rather just have someone smart and reasonable discussing hockey.  I don't need it to be someone I agree with; I just want someone who is being genuine and promotes the game.  I think Tortorella is the former, but I don't think he does the latter.

That said, he probably does generate plenty of clicks for ESPN from angry hockey fans, so he's earning his money.  He won't get any from me.

The fans in Edmonton were so angry about his McDavid comments. As somebody living amongst Oilers fans, I couldn't get enough of it.

Torts braying about how the Zegras/Milano goal is bad for hockey and not how the game should be played makes perfect sense for why so many good players bolted out of Columbus. Eakins won’t have to worry him taking his job.

Torts is such a great 'analyst' (studio guy), he's doing what ESPN pay him to do - generate views and clicks. This is the same as when he said McDavid should shut up. He gets people riled up and passionate about the game. He plays the role of angry old man now that Don Cherry is gone, except without the bigotry. I think it's great.

Red Wing fans are still very upset about Zegras since the "Dish-igan". A brief scroll through twitter and I've already seen several hot takes like "he's not a true rookie" (24gp last year on one of the worst hockey teams ever but ok) or "he's only a 1c cause Getzlaf is hurt" (even though most of his points have come after Getzlaf went down).. If anything all these arguments only strengthen his case. He played on those god-awful Ducks from earlier in the year who brought the exact same sorry roster into this season and now they're near the top of their division based off the improvement of their youngsters. They've managed to maintain their standing after their leader went out because of Zegras stepping up into his place and running with it. I don't even care if the Ducks miss the playoffs, the Calder is his. Give him next season's award too just to be safe.

I'm guessing the same Red Wing fans have no problem with Nedeljkovic being a rookie of the year finalist despite playing 28 games for Carolina prior to joining them.

The market matters, too.  I love the team no matter what, but the SoCal sports market is fickle.  The Ducks have been successful and exciting this season.  Yet they're 28th in the league in attendance.  I don't know how much a playoff run would goose those figures, but it will help and might get the casual fan excited about this team again.

My thoughts on pending UFAs are evolving on a daily basis, but here's where I currently sit.

Deslauriers - No one is giving you more than a 4th round pick for him and the Ducks clearly value his locker room presence and on-ice toughness, regardless of my views of his hockey skills.  I'm all for trading him, but that seems to me like it might not be worth it.

Getzlaf - I'm against trading him.  He should be a lifelong Duck.  I'm sorry, this might be foolish on paper, but I don't care.  I don't want him putting on another jersey.  I know some of you want to see him get another deep playoff run, maybe even with Perry in Tampa, but screw that.  Duck for life.

Manson - He's the one guy I think should be traded no matter what.  I don't think he's good any more.  He's been ok this season, but I think Fowler's been carrying him a lot.  That said, even though Murray's gone, I get the sense the organization still loves him.  He's got an 'A' on his chest.  But if you can get a 2nd rounder or better for him, you've got to do it, regardless of whether you're in a playoff chase.

Rakell - Now we get to the tricky ones.  He's rehabilitating his value this season, but I'm still skeptical as to what he'll bring in return.  I'm guessing a 2nd is where he'll be, but he could bring a 1st.  He's also the most internally replaceable of the Ducks' UFAs (outside of Deslauriers), particularly if Comtois and Jones come back and play decently.  I like Rakell a lot, so if the Ducks are still in the playoff hunt, I can't be sad if he's still around.  But I also think the best move is probably to trade him since there's no reason to re-sign him this offseason.

Lindholm - This is the big question.  The Ducks really have to get him re-signed before the deadline because he is too valuable an asset to hold onto as a UFA and he is too important to the team to trade (assuming they're in a playoff run).

That's a lot of words to say that if the Ducks are in a playoff chase (meaning in a playoff spot and playing decently), I could see them holding on to a lot of these guys.  And I can't say I'm all that opposed to it any more.  I'd love to see the franchise get rejuvenated.  Just don't trade any future assets for short-term help.  That would be a disaster.

I pretty much agree with everything you have said. The one guy I slightly disagree with is Rakell. I want Anaheim to re-sign him as I'm not sure he's as easily replaceable as everyone says. Comtois had one good season, but he struggled this year before he got hurt. Jones has never really proven himself as a goal scorer. We have Perreault and a few other goal scoring prospects in the pipeline, but there's no guarantee they will be able to score at the NHL level.

I don't know. Anaheim has been so bad at scoring goals for so long, I don't want to lose one of our proven goal scoring wingers if we can help it.

The teams I’m interested in watching what they do is Detroit. They are still rebuilding as well and currently in a playoff spot. I wonder if Yzerman make a push this year. He’s got much more of a reason to do it than the Ducks do, imo.

Detroit are only in the wildcard right now because they have played more games. Based on point percentage they are on the outside looking in. I don't think they will be close to a playoff spot by March. Yzerman will take his time I think.

I've always got the sense that Eakins is a great locker room coach, but a terrible behind the bench coach...

The fact that he plays guys like Deslauriers in the last minute of tied games makes me pretty certain that this is the case.

Various sites are now listing their top 10 candidates to be traded at the deadline. The lists I saw not one Duck was mentioned.

Personally I'm trying to re-sign Lindholm and Rakell, so I wouldn't move those guys. Though I'm not sure if management agrees.

Getzlaf I think it's up to him if he wants to go to a contender at the deadline. Since the team is competitive he may want to stay.

Manson is the one guy I think they have to move at the deadline. Competing teams want defensive depth, and Manson plays a physical style that works in the playoffs. He could bring back a first or second round pick depending on the market.

I'm sure the team would love to move Silfverberg and/or Henrique but there won't be many takers for their contracts.
