Everybody seems to hate the Meruelo guy, but for some reason Buttman keeps reassuring him that everything will be fine and he'll het his team back. Now, does mr. Meruelo have some incriminating evidence against Gary the sly?

What's even weirder is the guy is a real estate magnate? How do you not know the process? I've read that we wants special tax status and that's being denied. He likely has piddleed a lot of people off in the higher ups of Arizona it seems...

    That's the spirit...

We're cautiously optimistic over here. I'd like to see some more structure and creativity in our pp. Last year was pretty boring and predictable with all the perimeter passing for a minute and a half. We'll see.

I think if FL somehow pulls it out, Bobrovsky doesn't get the Conn Smythe.  It either goes to perhaps whoever is the Game 7 hero, or possibly even McDavid, just like happened with Giguere.

If the Oilers win, obviously McDavid gets it.

Yeah I can't see a scenario where McDavid isn't the Conn Smythe winner regardless of the result.

Just quietly forget about this debacle and carry on with 32 teams which is optimal...

Can we just imagine if Utah was never given the team and the league decided to let the yotes stay and win the auction? Lol I think the league was afraid of exactly this result. Someone hasn't done their due diligence, I don't think it's a city thing. When you buy a property isn't it on the buyer to find out what they can and can't build before the purchase? And is there only one bidder? The whole thing seems kind of weird.

You really aren't making any sense.

From what I know, and what’s been written about his contributions to the team, Scotty hasn’t been a scout for the draft. There’s a slight chance he’s had some input since he rejoined the team to help select Beek as the new GM, but before, when he was part of the coaching staff for our AHL affiliate, he wasn’t involved (which, among other things, i think contributed to him sort of matriculating away from the team until the Samuelis asked him back (with Teemu and Paul) to help select a new GM.

There’s a difference between a locker room being “bad”, and a locker room not having a good mentor in it. Some players just play, set a good example, and go home. They don’t teach, they don’t mentor outside game nights, and that’s fine in general, but not fine for a team in a rebuild.

i listed who I think are actual decent positive reinforcers on the team, but I don’t think they’ve been supported as mentors within the team hierarchy. It seems like something missing from the team, and it feels like Beek trying to force something that’s not effective. I hope Cronin can get a bit more involved in those decisions, cause I heard him talk about V and G being good energy for the team, but I’m not sure he’s utilized them as mentors as mich as he could to good effect (Gudas has been doing pretty good with his line mates, but I think Beek wants to force it out of Cam, and it’s not happening).

and yeah, I’ve been blaming Getz for being a Dehydrated Donkey Dung mentor since he gave up on Nick Ritchie. Getz had some mild success with TT, but I think the stuff that really helped TT came from elsewhere.

I think I do have insight, but I’m not sure any is needed. Look at individual player performance year over year for our developing youngers, and tell me you see a healthy mentorship system.

as for who’s being groomed for leadership, how, and why?  That, I do know, and you would too if you listened to what Beek and Cronin and the rest of the team staff keep saying month after month, game after game.  I certainly think the team is failing at said grooming, and I think it’s because Beek is trying to force a square peg into a round hole AND can’t recognize leadership when it’s not in a Lightning uniform.

I fear Beek is so narrow minded that he’s effectively blind to good fortune. Jury is still out on how the trade pans out, but I don’t know how Beek lucked into the Cutter trade.

Also, you can totally buy beer at 23.

It's weird the team doesn't have a good transition of leadership after Getzy. We've had pretty good leadership since the Scotty years but Getzy couldn't or didn't want to mentor someone to the same effect. You could see the void left, and it's not the kind where it's big shoes to fill and someone will step up. No one has yet. That's concerning. And the rest of the vets don't want the leadership role either (like Fowler, who refuses the C). I think that's why Verbeek is trying to get that part of the process kick started by bringing in vets. The team is currently leader less and if we select a captain (which we are supposed to) do we credit Getzy? Like idk. It doesn't feel like we should. That's all I'm saying...

Did you just say ….  “to be fair, Niedermayer hasn't panned out as an off-ice mentor for the Ducks”

Like wtf, Zelly / Pavel / Tristian / LaCombe all rookies playing in the NHL this season, all seem to have a future in the NHL as well.   Just a weird comment that has not basis in reality.

and then the Getz comment, our captain so important it’s we haven’t replaced him yet, and you’re blaming him for his inability to mentor ?

you are grasping at things with no real insight.   You don’t know that locker room, don’t know who’s being groomed for leadership roles and how or why.

you are looking at a painting of a sunset, with just the sky painted and saying, this will never amount to any of value.   Our core players are all 23 years old or younger, let them buy a beer legally before blaming the infrastructure of mentors and leadership…. Geez

Just because those guys were rookies doesn't necessarily amount to Neidermayer=good mentor. He's been in the organization for how long in this role? Either he didn't do much before or he started actually trying. For someone telling others about the locker room you sure seem to know a lot yourself then eh? How everyone acts proper or whatnot. Getz doesn't even live in the area anymore and sometimes travels to Anaheim but not too often. Getzy for the great leader he was while he was here doesn't seem like he was able to mentor any of the kids to take over like Scotty did with Getzy. Maybe, just maybe Getzy isn't that kind of person off the ice. And that's fine. Not everyone has to be. Gretzky was the greatest player to ever play the game but sucked as an NHL head coach. Great players on the ice doesn't equal great leaders off the ice. Not sure why that would be a hard concept to grasp.... Geez

As I said, it was a mistake by Blake, and he admitted it by partially fixing it. Dubois was a multiple 60+ points scorer prior to being dealt to Hollywood team, he looked very good statistically. Didn't work out, and Blake found a taker for this bad contract without retaining any salary. Look, we signed 34 y/o Killorn to generous retirement contract, Terry to 7 x $7 = $49 mil after only one successful season, Strome for 5 x $5 = $25, and I don't hear you guy talking about it.  Somebody said, "we are in a rebuild".  For how much longer? Any meaningful date when rebuild is over? Does it mean we don't need to do anything with our own bad contracts because, who cares, we are in rebuild?

The bolded is exactly my point. You're never satisfied either way. Like I said you would critique him if he does or doesn't do something. Maybe we should have traded Terry to the Caps for Kuemper? What a win that would be for Verbeek! Sadly he missed his chance.....

Good trade by Hollywood team tonight. Not only they will save about $44 mil down the road, they also cleared about $3.5 mil a year under salary cap. This trade shows me that Blake has 2 merits our GM doesn't.

    1. Blake is not afraid to recognize his mistake. Yes, he does mistakes, like every other GM, but only few GM's have guts to admit it.

2., Somehow he finds a way to get rid of bad contracts without retaining any salary. Our Ducks, IMHO, have 4 bad contracts, and Verbeek is personally responsible for 2 of them - Strome and Killorn.  Is he going to wait for 3 more years till these contracts expire or he'll try to get rid of at least one of them?

Lol your defense of Blake is fascinating! First off, you would have been the first one to call Verbeek an idiot if he EVER signed a contract that bad. So you're sort of playing a double standard here by defending Blake through this whole dilemma.

Second, he still traded for another bad contract. Yeah maybe it's less bad but it still sucks. What do you want Verbeek to trade Strome for another pylon? Stop pretending you would be ok with that. You'd once again call Verbeek an idiot.

Besides, we've already discussed why we signed them to those contracts and it's because we're at the bottom and getting talent willing to come here right now isn't easy. You make it out like Verbeek wants to overpay players. And we're also in a rebuild. We've gotten rid of a few others just waiting the contacts out because we're (gasp) not at the cap ceiling and needing room because we're competing for the Cup.

Also stated plan is for Demidov to play his last season in Russia this year and sign immediately after. Which I think would mean he would be able to play this hear in the NHL. I could be wrong about

If Demidov is willing to come to our team, so we pick him? I think we should. The Russian ban in Anaheim is over.

FOWLer, due to his contract and team's politics, can't be on 3rd pairing. He is our legend.

Rumors are Zegras to Montreal for David Reinbacher. Hm.... I don't know. If this is true, this team will never stop rebuilding. Not in my lifetime.

Maybe PV is purposefully keeping him in the rumor mill to kind of get him to work harder. Like "you want to not be talked about in the rumors? Then work harder and those rumors will disappear I guarantee it!" Just a thought.

4 Suitors With ‘Premium Goalies’ for Devil’s No. 10 Pick: Report (msn.com)

“There are four premium goaltenders to target in the offseason, and you could probably get any of the four for that No. 10 pick,” Duhatschek wrote. “Realistically, with a few restrictions and quibbles, their targets should be, in order: Jacob Markstrom of the Calgary Flames, Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins, John Gibson of the Anaheim Ducks, and Juuse Saros of the Nashville Predators.”

Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald confirmed that New Jersey will trade the No. 10 pick if the return yields a valuable asset.

So Gibson is still considered a "premium goaltender" in some circles. That's good for us. He's probably still a good goaltender and likely needs a change of scenery. I'd trade Gibby for sure.

There are so many good stories to root for and bad ones to root against in this series...

With Florida, love rooting for a first time Cup for a franchise. Love rooting for a team that on paper is just solid top to bottom, sets a good precedent. Love rooting for us to get a 31st pick over 32nd (lololol it doesn't matter). Rooting for Montour. Personally, I do like Tkachuk. Love seeing solid goaltending. Love Paul Maurice. Rooting for Kulikov and Mahura a bit too i guess, even though mahura i don't think has played a game in the playoffs.

With Edmonton, would be amazing to see Canada get their first cup. Love McDavid and Draisaitl. Truly would love to see Rico and Carrick get a cut, and Perry get another one. But it's so hard to root for Kane. And also I don't love how weak they are in goaltending and defensive -- BUT I must admit, they are being coached very well and I have been impressed by their defensive side of things at times this playoffs. And even their goaltending. And Bouchard is having a CRAZY good playoffs. So it's not entirely just a top-heavy team with 2 of the best players ever carrying the team. Also if they win, kinda love how often "fire head coach beginning of season, win stanley cup" would become a thing...

I still think I'm rooting for the Oilers....but i'll see how I feel as I watch and who I seem to be rooting for as the game goes on.

I'd have to think this is perry's last go. With pavelski retiring I think this is also the end of the Perry era. So going out on a winning note would be awesome!

Let the Zegras rumors fly again. Remember I always said I'd be shocked if he was still on this team next year.

"TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun writes in The Athletic(opens in a new tab) that Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek is listening to offers for Zegras and Gibson, though moving either is far from a sure thing."

  14. We need to be rooting for Edmonton. I saw someone comment and had to look it up and it turns out that the additional 5th round pick gets upgraded to a 4th rd pick if they win the cup. So not that great but hey at this point it would be something. So we'd be looking at the #32 pick and #128 instead of #31 and #155 of they lose.

Dang it, it's for 2025.... eh better than nothing. Lol

Then who would be the 3rd LHD? LaCombe or Vaakanainen? I wouldn't sacrifice Zellweger to keep either of them.

Trading Zelly is asking for another Theodore like situation it feels like. Give him time to grow and see what he turns into.

The comparison of stats between two goalies on the same team doesn't really matter much here. We're talking about a goalie who plays on better teams vs someone who played on worse teams. Of course Freddy's numbers will be better. Dostal was better than Gibby this season but his stats aren't that much better. Stolarz also played the lesser opponents if I remember correctly (because we've discussed that during that season). Gibby has his faults no doubt. But the comparison between keeping Gibby and Freddy I think is probably settled in that we made the correct choice but the team was on a downhill trajectory. No matter who we kept though it wouldn't have mattered too much as we ultimately entered a rebuild and both would have suffered the same fate.

Anderson in the last six seasons:

    238 games, 29 shots faced avg. per game, .914 Sv%, 2.57 GAA

Gibson in the last six seasons:

    299 games, 32 shots faced avg. per game, .903 Sv%, 3.26 GAA

For goalies that played more than 120 games over those 6 seasons, Anderson ranks 11th in Sv% and 9th in GAA, out of 53 total goalies.

Gibson, respectively, ranks 43rd and 50th.

Yeah but I'm going to keep repeating it (and I don't think that was your intention) that Gibson has played on far worse teams over the past six years so of course his numbers are going to be worse. Anderson has played for Toronto and the canes, two very good teams especially lately. Compared to the dumpster fire that the Ducks have been.
