No worries, your first post just throw out numbers with no explanation.   So I didn’t know what point you were trying to make.

Also, yes the Eaves (getting a disease or something) and Kessler (exploding hips), Perry not playing like a top line player, Getz being hurt, Manson being hurt all the time.    I understand why Bob tried to put bandaids and stay competitive.   I wonder how he would have handled the trade deadline when we shipped off Manson / Raks / Lindholm / Deslauries, and officially started the rebuild.

I think Bob wasn't planning to tear down this team. He likely would have tried to continue to salvage the team by applying even more band aids. The problem with that approach would have been an even deeper and harder rebuild because our picks and prospects wouldn't have been as good and the best we'd get to would be like the wild, who were decent but never more than a borderline playoff team that didn't go far in the playoffs.

Who knows though, maybe Bob would have bumbled his way into decent players. If Verbeek doesn't sell some corner stone players in 2022 we don't draft 10th and grab Minty. We might never draft Leo. But on the other hand we might also be worse because if he puts band aids on the team they could fall off and it would be a big fail. We don't really know that alternate universe whether it would have been good or bad. And while it's very hard to see the good during these rough times I think we're still building towards something. Which couldn't be said about Bob in his final years.

  2. Just looked at the 18-19 season and man oh man was that insane! 432 man games lost due to injury that year! Absolutely crazy.

The 17-18 season was 316 man games lost.

I think those two seasons really killed the team. Players went down with career ending injuries and threw the team into spiral. Bob wasn't able to recover from it all and we've been going downhill ever since.

McDavid misses 51 games due to injury …… Ross Johnston misses 51 games due to injury.

Which one hurts Edmonton more (assuming Ross Johnston was their 13th forward )

Well duh. No one is arguing that. I just wanted to see the total number of man games lost due to injury and was surprised to see that last year we actually had more than this season even though this year feels like there's more injuries. And that makes sense because if you look at the list of injuries we've been hit harder to our top guys more than last year. Besides, I also mentioned that the load management and the trade of Drysdale also should technically count and would bring the numbers closer to last year. And to top it all off, guys were getting injured when someone would just get back so we never really got to play with a full healthy roster.

Last season the biggest loss among our forwards was Rico who was out almost a quarter of the season. And among d men it was Drysdale. This season we've been hit with injuries to both the forwards and defensemen that are more important to the team. It's quite a difference if you compare the two lists.

Being a good player does not mean this person will be a good GM. Remember Gretzky as a coach and GM of Arizona Coyotes?

While I am old enough to remember Verbeek as a good player, especially playing for Dallas, as a GM he made quite a few moves that questionable at least.  He signed Strome to $25 mil contract who by the age of 29 for the first and only time in his career scored 21 goals in a season. Before Strome even put Ducks uniform, I knew it will be a waste of money and cap space for the next 5 years.

How do you give 34 y/o Killorn 4 years retirement contract? Now  for the next 3 years we have to cross our fingers he won't go Kesler on us.

I also don't understand PV's love for rejects from another teams. While Leason is a borderline NHL player, what is it he saw in Meyers, Johnson, Lagesson, McGinn that we don't see? I hear the arguments "Oh, they are just fill in people, they'll be gone next season". Well, till Verbeek gets another bunch of warm bodies to fill up?  This summer he'll have 3rd chance to redeem himself, will see what happens.

I'm fine with the vet signings. I think we need guys who can help the young guys along, it prevents the Edmonton disaster during those years they won the 1st OA several years in a row. But those waivers and low level guys just annoy me. Ok fine we need players to play those positions but they're whatever and we keep playing Johnston over other guys who are better. I get the rebuild but we have to transition from these dumpster diving pickups to better quality players. In that regard Verbeek is similar to Bob and I'm afraid we become hesitant and don't pull the trigger when it's time and miss out on a really good chance at the cup.

You’re gonna have to show your work:

Zegras 81 games to 31 games

McTavish 80 games to 64 games

Lundestrom 61 games to 46 games

Drysdale only played 8 games last season, came back healthy and only played 10 games

Carlsson will have played in 55 out of 82 games

Gudas will have played in 66 of 82 games

Killorn will have played in 63 of 82 games

Mintyukov will have played in 63 of 82 games

Fowler, Terry, Strome, Vatrano, and Henrique were the only constants from the two years in terms of games played.

The games missed by guys that matter between last season and this season is huge. 9 guys played 70 or more games last season. Only 6 this season.

I went based off this website so I'm not exactly sure how accurate this is.

I think it is hard to argue they are better OR worse than last season.  I feel like they are about the same.

The only difference between the two seasons is how many man games missed due to injury.  Zegras, Carlsson, McTavish, Drysdale, Killorn, Mintyukov, Gudas, Lundestrom, McGinn.

If you compare the games missed in the two seasons to key guys on the roster/guys who could allow everyone to slot into their roles it's not even close.

I just counted up the man games lost for last season and through April 12 this season.

Last- 352 man games lost due to injury

This- 292 man games lost due to injury (doesn't seem to include Leo load management and if we're getting technical then Dryadale should also be included at least up to the dead line since he was healthy enough to play but got traded for someone who isn't on the roster)

Do they really think they're going to attract more fans in Utah than in Arizona?  I don't.  They will at first, just like Phoenix did at first.

Arizona seems like a far bigger Sports state than Utah.  They have well known College teams, and "had" all 4 major sports.  Utah has Basketball, and that's it.  The Basketball team hasn't been good for awhile, and I don't think they ever won a Championship.

I'm sure the Ownership will get a nice fat paycheck from the deal, so that's all that matters.  Perhaps if they had a better team, they would have been more popular in Arizona.

I guess that's one good thing about the Samueli's being the owners.  They're in O.C., and have said they won't relocate the team.  But if they ever leave, and the Ducks continue to flounder, attendance will decline even more, and they're certainly a possibility to relocate.

Well it worked out for Vegas. If they have less competition for entertainment it could do a lot for that team.

There's nothing to look at.  Every GM signed off on it and agreed that it is a good thing.

Sure but it's not with this kind of intent to bend the rules. There's nothing wrong with finding loopholes in the rules to get an edge but this just seems like one of those that should be dealt with alongside the college loophole.

Stamkos immediately makes the top 6 better, gives you the ability to shift guys like Strome, Vatrano down, making your depth way better. Gives you a legit shot on the PP and a guy who can pot the sick passes Leo and or Z have been dishing out all year just for someone like Lundestrom to whiff the shot

You could also plant him on the left side one timer on the pp with mct on the right side. That could be real interesting to watch. Zegras behind the net dishing to one or the other.... make it happen lol

    Let's see (where to begin):

0 SOG, 0 points, 1 hit, team low -6 last night.  I saw one MTL goal where Slafkovsky was wide open in front and Drysdale was motioning for someone to cover him.  Would have been a head's up play, except Slafkovsky was Drysdale's guy.  Oof.

Previous game (L) against CLB? 0 points, 4 SOG, -2

Game before that (L) against BUF? 0 points, 4 SOG, even

Game before that (OTL) against NYI? 1 assist, 4 SOG, even

Game before that (L) v. CHI? DNP, was week-to-week

31 games played this season (10 in ANA, 21 in PHI):

    3 goals, 7 assists, -19

The guy has played 144 NHL games and is a -60.

If Drysdale doesn't significantly improve this is going to get ugly pretty fast because they overhyped Drys and downplayed Cutter. Especially if Cutter ends up playing pretty well.

Zegras at the start of the year can be blamed on missing training camp and getting back into game shape. Though he is playing better now, he is still not putting up the numbers and I feel it is the system he is being forced to play that is holding back his offensive game.

Yes, but Zegras also has made some really nice passes and the only problem is the guy getting it can't finish. I think Zegras game isn't scoring goals but more of a set up man. And when he sets one up, he really sets it up! But guys have hands of stone. Honestly we need a finisher really really badly and I hope Cutter is going to be that guy. We have too many play makers and not enough finishers. Leo, McT, Terry and Zegras are more play makers then actual scorers although McT has that ability to become that guy. One reason why Milano worked with Zegras was because he knew his role and that was to be ready for that pass from Zegras and shoot. He didn't over think his role with the team. Terry tries to dangle the opposing team and do it himself. He's got a good shot but he needs to give that play set up to the other guy and get open. Vatrano and to a lesser extent Killorn are really the only guys with a real sense of shoot first mentality. Strome is a passer too. I'm not even going to get into the bottom 6 because that's a mess. We're basically trying to pass the puck into the net most games. It's like Getzy, he had a good shot but 9/10 times be looking to pass. Now we have a whole team of Getzy lites (for now) but no Perry to finish.

So yeah partially it's our defensive system and partially it's the players we have. Tommer you mentioned the PPG line, they brought in roughly 100 goals. At our current rate our personnel isn't capable of that. A lot sort of hinges on what Cutter can bring. If he becomes a 40+ goal scorer then sure between Leo and Z we could get close to those goals totals of 100. I think we're a long way off from that yet but if they continue to improve we could get there sure. If Cutter plays in a couple of games this season, I'd like to see that line together.

Also keep in mind those stats from last year are not a full 82 games either as guys were hurt as well, so to say that they are identical on an 82 game pace isn't correct. If they put up those numbers playing 69 games last year, then on an 82 game pace this year still means they are lower. Based on a point per game using last years stats and this year's 82 game pace

Zegras - Last year .8 PPG, this year .33PPG

Terry - Last year .87 PPG, this year .71 PPG

McTavish - Last year .54 PPG, this year .5 PPG

Vatrano - Last year .51 PPG, this year .71 PPG

And I said McTavish hasn't regressed, just hasn't taken any step forward. Terry and Zegras have. And all these guys may not get another point this year which will hurt the final numbers.

Ok that makes sense now. I guess I just assumed it was based on 82 games last season. Zegras is really the strange one. I think he was playing hurt at the beginning of the year because he's been playing well the few games he's been back since his return.

    Last year

    Vatrano 22G 19A 41P 66PIM

    Terry 23G 38A 61P

    McTavish 17G 26A 43P 44PIM

    Killorn 27G 37A 64P 53PIM

    Carlsson

    Zegras 23G 42A 65P

This year (in brackets is pace over 82 games)

    Vatrano 30G 23A 53 P(33G 25A 58P) 79PIM

    Terry 19G 30A 49 P(23G 36A 58P)

    McTavish 18G 23A 41P (23G 30A 53P) 86PIM

    Killorn 15G 16A 31P (22G 23A 45P) 52PIM

    Carlsson 9G 15A 24P (15G 26A 41P)

    Zegras 4G 4A 8P (14G 14A 27P)

Doesn't really seem like they're producing less. Only Zegras production has significantly dropped. Seems to me like the issues with their production is injuries. Otherwise most everyone is producing about the same or better when projected out to a full season. Killorn can't really be compared either since he's played on a far far better team. But even so his numbers seem more in line with his historical average. I don't think you can discount injuries in this case. And saying everyone deals with injuries, what other teams have dealt with a majority of theirs going against their top players? We can also deal with bottom 6 players getting injured fairly easily. Maybe even a top player, although it would be harder since we're not as deep. Top 4 d men also injured often. That's a lot of the team's meat and potatoes. We had guys like Jones and Leason on the top line for parts of the season. What other team has done something like that?

  15. 5 hours ago, perry_mvp said:

I don't think that side really matters. McTavish was being set-up last season on his off wing and ripping pucks. For some reason this season, the strategy was different. Also next season, Gauthier is going to be on the PP.

That's pretty interesting. Although every time they set somebody up it's like it's being done in slow motion. You can see it coming from a mile away. Brown needs to go asap. I want a newer looking pp with some actual strategy. Give the players more room for creativity. Z, Leo and Zelly should be given free reign, those guys can make magic happen. But I'm fine with McT ripping pucks since he can hammer them. Just set him up better. In fact put guys in positions to succeed and we'll see a better pp that's more aligned with actual nhl level play.

Very good post considering today is 1st of April.........

But it is true though. We have spent to the cap. My biggest issue so far has been our, and to be fair we've only had two GM's closing in on two decades, bargain basement GM's. I'm not sure what the issue is, maybe Bob took Verbeek thrifting once and he fell in love. I mean why is Bob even allowed in here at all? Verbeek has so far been much the same way. He's like the coupon guy who buys the whole store and only pays a couple bucks. I've refrained from the direct comparison to Bob but he hasn't really helped with his weird bottom of the bin pickups. The only difference so far has been that he's willing to pick up some more expensive vets.

And I can't help but notice that Cronin and Eakins have some weird love for fourth line guys. Eakins with Dlo and Grantzlaf and Cronin with Johnston. I'm honestly almost ready to jump on the bandwagon of firing both of them. Though I'm still holding onto a sliver of hope that we can turn this around. We'll see...😮‍💨

  17. If what Sask posted is true about the 1 yr contract that Cronin is on then I think the decision to keep him may come down to the players themselves. If enough players complain about the coach I don't think the gm wants to deal with a bunch of trade requests like Calgary is going through. If a few players complain Verbeek can chalk that up to them not wanting to conform and/or are stubborn and will look to trade them out of the locker room. I'm worried about Zegras. To me he seems like the guy with possibly the biggest complaint against Cronin and if he's not backed up by the other players, he might as well already be good as gone. And I really don't want that to happen. If I'm choosing between Z and Cronin, I'm going to choose Z. Cronin hasn't done enough to justify keeping him over Z. Pat might see it otherwise but I think the treatment of Z is not justified. Why is he one of the only ones being punished?

Samuili family has many businesses that generate cash flow. The Anaheim Duck team is the write-off. Face it, we will never have a proper team. We trade good players. We keep the mediocre ones. We hire incompetent GMs and coaching staff. Everyone wants to win but only the angry ones and the committed ones win. we are neither of the two.

You will hear on APR 16 from Osama Verbeek that he will do his job and look for talent in the free agency market every year, and nothing will happen.

I disagree here. We won the cup in 07 under them while spending to the cap. We spent to the cap in the mid 2010s while we were cup contenders. They're willing to spend the $ but what's the point if we're rebuilding? We went after some of the most expensive free agents the past couple years as well. We do have an internal budget, that's been well discussed. We seem to hire thrifty GM's and they become so thrifty that they don't spend when the time comes to do so. I'm sure Henry and Susan are willing to spend the money when the time comes to hit that level but for the time being we can't buy our way out of the rebuild. We're not a big market and we're not located in Canada where fans will come even if the team sucks. We have to be smart with our finances sure, and come to think of it perhaps Bob knew it would be difficult to spend our way out of a deep rebuild which is why he really wanted to avoid going that route.

I would not be surprised if Verbeek signs Steve Stamkos in the offseason. Indeed, he fits all Verbeek's requirements:

    1. He is old.  2. Verbeek "knows him".  3. Stamkos won a few Stanley Caps in the past, and he'll bring "leadership to the locker room" 4. Seems like by now every player's agent around the league knows, if his client is over the hill and needs a good "retirement contract", Verbeek is the right person to call.

We'll see what happens this summer.

Stamkos would be a decent signing imo. I wouldn't mind instantly making him the captain for a few years. But I think for everything said about him, all the trade talks and cap issues the lightning face he'll probably re-sign for a lower cap hit. The only way I see him coming here is if we overpay (and longer contract) and convince him of his role with the team.

Can y'all believe it? I started this thread a little over 10 years ago, and Ovechkin's now less than 50 goals away from breaking Gretzky's record! Might have seemed a little unbelievable to some 10 years ago but looking forward to history being made. Only 47 goals away! Let's just hope goal 47 isn't an empty netter. Lol. Hopefully he'll break the record next year. We shall see...

He's been picking it up lately and looks like he'll have another 30 goal season. I don't think he breaks it next season but the following sure. Although, who knows right ovi could get 50 lol

    Two problems with man-on-man:

    1. If you can't stick with your check, and stay inside of your guy, it won't work.

    2. You often end up chasing guys to very "undangerous" parts of ice.  There are times to pressure guys, and times to let them have space because they are not in a dangerous scoring area.

    Some other stats:

The Ducks are good at blocking shots.  8th OA in the league.  That's a plus.

They are pretty good at not giving the puck away (12th OA) but terrible at takeaways (26th)

They suck at generating shots (30th).  The best team, PHI, has almost 500 more shots than them over 70 games - about 7, on average, a game.

Their team Sht% is terrible - 26th OA.

Those last two are a BAD combo - can generate shots, can't beat the goaltender.

In 72 games, they have scored first 28 times (31st).  They are 14-11-3 in those games.  Getting scored on first? 44 games (also 31st), with a 10-33-1 record.  Whoa, momma.

Aren't some of those stats partly due to the injuries we've had? I'm not trying to excuse this team by playing the injury card but at some point we've got to admit that injuries have taken a huge toll on this team. Especially our top players, who can't even develop chemistry properly.

I do think the systems we've employed aren't helping since a lot of guys are still trying to find their game in this league. I think we need to simplify the way we're playing, at least for the time being. But on the other hand you start running into the issue of guys getting lost and confused as to what system/ role they're supposed to be doing.

I go back to this example a lot:

When BB was the coach and we had serious issues with scoring what did the coaching staff do? They implemented a defense heavy approach to balance out the issue of scoring. And it worked. We saw our goalies win the Jennings that season. But, I think we're not actually capable of doing this for several reasons.

First is our coaching staff. I believe we had Yawney behind Bruce who helped implement that defensive system. We don't have someone like that. If anything we need to get rid of the current assistants and find new ones asap. I'm still, and I'll keep repeating this, not sure why we decided to give them a chance when they sucked last year. Whatever.

Second is our player personnel. Who on this team would we actually qualify as true shutdown players? Lundy? Silf? What about the defense? Ok so we're on the right path on D. Goaltending is all over the board and you never know what you're going to get but the players on the ice sure don't help the goalies very much. So we're neither an offensive juggernaut nor a defensive one either. We're still just a Mish mash of players with guys getting unloaded at the deadline. We're still trying to sell off players and get younger moving away from the team veterans of Christmas past.

And lastly, we're just too young and inexperienced. Look at teams like Detroit, the Sens, and Buffalo. Those guys have been rebuilding forever and they're not making too much progress either, except for Detroit who actually has a chance to make the playoffs (finally). It's just really hard to get out of the bottom once you completely gut a team. I don't think we've even dipped as low as Buffalo has and we're struggling to get out let alone them. It takes players time to grow but at some point you can't watch paint dry and you need to speed up the process. We need to get top players but it's not an easy thing to do. I think we need to seriously think about parting ways with some of our draft picks for some much needed help. We can't rely solely on picks to get better because not all of them pan out. We need to start taking major steps forward. Verbeek is starting to look like Bob the dumpster diving master 2.0. What's with the weird bargain bin pickups for the bottom 6 and bottom pair defenseman? Are we ever going to stop doing this as a franchise? It's getting annoying. We have our young core in place now let's work on actually getting good players in the room to move the needle. The young guys need to develop but at this rate we're slowing becoming the oilers and not in a good way. We've almost dumped the last of the bad contacts and vets off this team so hopefully we get new fresh faces in the room who are hungry to win.

I'm still convinced the team should have moved on from Eakins before his last year. That was a huge mistake. I understand we got Leo and that's really awesome but it seems like we can't shake this losing mentality now. Or at least it's very difficult. You can see the players are tired of losing too. But if they want to win so badly why aren't they competing harder? I don't get why guys in our bottom 6 aren't trying to do more to earn contracts. It's like the whole team knows it's a loser. Because that's what we've become, a bunch of losers.
