I agree totally with what you’re saying except one little thing.   Obviously we are stocking the barren cupboard of prospects with draft picks.   And trading away all UFA’s with value for picks and almost NHL ready players, who more readily match our “Stanley Cup” window timeline.

but the next step, is to kings or devils it and trade assets for Fiala or debrincat.   Now I don’t know if this is the off-season GMPV does that or 2025, but soon he will make a trade for someone.   At least in theory.   His mentor did it and in Tampa started trading for positions of needs after acquiring draft picks.

https://thehockeywriters.com/steve-yzerman-best-trades-lightning/#:~:text=Yzerman sent Namestnikov%2C prospects Libor, and McDonagh fit that bill.

I hope we're able to get someone this off season. I think Verbeek is going to try to get one more legit top 6 forward and that's going to happen either through ufa or trade. And if it is through trade then we should have enough draft picks to do so.

The assumptions you make are hilarious, cause you assume GMPV settled for a 3rd when a 2nd was available.   Like hey we will give you a 3rd for 50% retained…. Deal !   Like it was their first phone call on the situation.  You also assume the third rounder will be used on a draft pick, instead of packaged with another trade or something.  A 2025 3rd round draft pick is more important than someone playing another 25 games with us before leaving.  (Even though his mentoring was great for Pavel) Not because it’s an NHL player, but because it’s another trade asset.  Whether it’s for a player or to move up in the draft.  You also assume moving one RHD wasn’t addition by subtraction, to give Zelly another cup of coffee or Lindstrom with a 25 game tryout.    That is why it was hilarious to me.

Well, given how we've managed those draft picks there's a good probability that we do pick someone rather than trade. But regardless, a draft pick is a draft pick and sometimes you hit a home run. Otherwise, what's the point of teams selecting beyond the first and second rounds since those are the two rounds where most of the players in the NHL come from. I'm fine with the pick and it gives us more options if we do decide to trade it. Gives us more flexibility down the line. It's kind of funny though that the reaction to this trade has some opposition. Like Verbeek traded a player that he didn't want to resign, retained money in order to get a better return and got a decent pick out of the deal (not to mention getting most of a year out of the player) and some people are upset. I understand maybe the return is slightly below expectations but given how many teams are up against the cap who's to say that other teams weren't offering similar deals and Toronto jumps on those? Then Verbeek gets pummeled in the comments section about how he could have traded with Toronto and someone else jumped at the opportunity and how Verbeek is an idiot. Just seems like people are laying on Verbeek at this point. We got a decent pick for a bottom pair defenseman who some on here wanted to practically give away for free because of his terrible play in many games, that's a win in my book.

Your buddy FOWLer would be 6/7th defenseman on any good team. As of TODAY, Lyubushkin is 11th in the entire NHL in blocks shots/hits per game. Yes, I know he's not a superstar and 3rd round pick is about right. But 50% salary retained? I don't get it.

I know Toronto has salary cup issues, so if I am Verbeek, I would say: "ok, I will retain 50%, but add some additional young NHL-ready player to this deal, or some prospect that we have on our list . Oh, you don't want to do it? Ok, think about it again, you still have a full week. Sorry, I have go, I have multiple calls from other GMs". Very high chance Toronto manager would call back again.

Maybe we could have gotten some prospect back that everyone would again immediately complain about. Whatever. Toronto could also just say we're going to pick up someone else too. Besides, their offer may have been lower until the injury to gio and they said fine, instead of a 4th we'll give you a third. How much are you willing to push? So we pulled the trigger. I'm not unhappy about the return, I think it's a good deal for us.

  4. Based on sports net:

Projected Total Cap Hit is a projection of the cap hit amounts for a team at the end of a season. It is calculated using pro-rated cap hits of all players and adjustments (buyouts, buried cap hits, etc) based on the number of days they impacted the team’s cap over the course of a season. Players and adjustments impacting the active roster currently are projected to impact the roster for the remainder of the season.

    and

player’s cap hit is determined as the average annual value of their current contract. Cap hit is calculated by dividing the total salary plus signing bonuses of a contract by the contract’s length. Performance bonuses are not included in a player’s cap hit, but will affect a team’s cap and a player’s cap hit if the performance bonuses are achieved.

So it is based on a daily basis.

your explanation is much better - the 142 day vs 50 day makes more sense, so we're about 3/4 of the contract done?

i still don't get all the cap hit stuff, both as you describe and as shown on capfriendly.  capfriendly shows his daily cap hit as $3581, but multiply that by 4 to get what his daily was for us before the trade.

it would be pretty cool to see that on capfriendly (the accumulated and daily per player).

How is the cap hit applied? I always thought it was based on number of games played and not days. Does anyone know how the cap hit works?

Even a faded, wrinkled $1 bill is still worth $1 dollar. Doesn't matter which pairing he is, they still wanted him and felt like they needed him and we retained 50%.

Don't understand this. We got to trade a guy for a third who's a bottom pairing d man on any playoff team and you're upset we had to retain? Carolina retained 25% and gave up some kind of prospect for a 6th round pick. That's worse. Besides, they wanted him only at a low cap hit. Let's say we retain 25% and end up with a 4th round pick. You'd be complaining why we didn't retain more for a better pick....

I was hoping for some young player or promising prospect. Trading a good defensive minded defenseman for late 3rd rounder is pretty much trading him for nothing. Plus 50% of salary retained. No wonder GM's around the league like to call Verbeek for discount sales.

I think your first error is calling him a good defensive minded defenseman. Lol he's not bad be I'm not sure I'd call him that good either. He's a bottom pair defenseman. Tanev was traded for a second and a defenseman prospect who currently has a goal and 4 assists in 44 games. Stats aren't everything and I'm not sure how good of a prospect he is but tanev was essentially the top d man this deadline. There's also a conditional 3rd but that not guaranteed right now. I think getting a third was a good move for Lyubushkin.

I think EP is likely to stay in Vancouver. He said that contract talks won’t happen until the offseason. Assuming he pulls a Tkachuk and he’d want to play here, I think the bolded is an overpayment that the Ducks won’t do. I think you’re looking at vatrano + Zegras/mcT + a top-10 protected pick. I don’t think there’s a chance the Ducks are in on him though.

I don't think that would be enough. You're over valuing what Zegras and McT are currently worth. Pettersson is an elite player over a ppg and only 25. Our guys just aren't there yet and might never reach that level of play. Besides, you'd have to overpay to get them to move him within the division. But it's likely not happening. Just because he hasn't signed doesn't mean he won't. He's currently their version of our Zegras speculation.

  9. 1 hour ago, Aksun said:

DTS mentioned it in a different thread (the Zegras one?) that we have all the pieces in the world to get a lot of people and cap space to boot. Z? Tradeable. McT? Yes sir. Bunch of picks? Absolutely.

Problem is, Verbeek wouldn't trade his picks if his life depended on it. Also, would EP fit the so-called 'team blueprint'? Age-wise etc etc.

Oh he would for sure fit our timeline. He's only 25. If anything he's the kind of player that would be perfect for us to target. He's not old but not young either so he would be more of that elite established vet that would instantly boost our top 6. According to capfriendly he plays C and LW so a top line of Pettersson- Leo- Terry/ Cutter has some real potential to turn into one of the best in the NHL (a guy can dream can't he!)

Oh but the report is the Canucks offered him 8x12 and he hasn't signed it....

  10. 18 minutes ago, Aksun said:

Trying to win is the right term to describe Vancouver, and they'd want Petterson for their run this spring. If the talks are rocky as reported then he wants to cash out of town after a playoff appearance. But that means he will pick his team in the offseason. If he's traded now at the TDL, Vancouver would need healthy veterans and not a couple of rookies.

Sooo....Henrique + Vatrano + some picks? What can we offer to EP to entice him to sign and trade? Playing with Leo and Lundy in SWEDEheim 2.0?

No, he's still an RFA at the end of the season so it's not like he'll be able to walk for nothing. No way Vancouver even listens to Rico and Vatrano as the main pieces and doesn't laugh. It would probably take McT + Rico or Vatrano (for their cup run) + 1st in 2025+ Zellweger and probably add additional picks for them to even consider moving him. And I don't see them moving him within the division unless we completely blow them away with an offer.

Why do you guys want Kakko? He is simply not good + he has some health problems not related to his injuries history.

Same here, I'm not in favor of getting kakko. But I wouldn't totally be upset with it either.

His “not good” is a solid two way 30-40 pt player. I’ll take that floor and bet on the ceiling. Hes far more of a sure thing than whatever late 1st round pick we get.

I agree that it's a better bet than a late 1st round pick, especially considering our track record with those. But we could also end up with a gem like perry was. Kakko just doesn't seem that great. But whatever I guess, Rico goes to ufa and we potentially get a 3rd/4th line player at worst and a potential second line player if he actually progresses. I just don't see why the Rangers haven't supposedly given him a chance either, and why they would give up on him not giving him the chance. He seems like our version of steel and Jones more than anything. Or Lundestrom. Players other teams may think haven't been given the chance but could break out on another team given the change in scenery. I just don't buy it. Maybe he hasn't been given the chance because he hasn't shown/ proven he deserves it. Isn't that why everyone says the Gulls shouldn't be up with the team? They haven't proven anything. But give them a chance, they might potentially play top 6 minutes. Same argument. Give Regenda a chance. Give Nestorenko a chance. No? Why? Cause they haven't proven themselves? Why does kakko deserve that chance? The Rangers are a really good team and he hasn't done much of anything over there. Maybe we should give yakupov a chance too.

Theodore, but also Montour, then Palmieri, better handling of Bobby Ryan, keeping Cogliano instead of throwing him out to the filthy dog that is George Parros. Of course, it is all "coulda, woulda, shoulda" talk, but we had the chances to salvage the ship, instead Bob reluctantly went down with it.

The Ryan trade wasn't that bad for us since we got Silf and he was pretty clutch for us in the playoffs those early years. We should have kept Cogs, that was a dumb trade.

All that I hear is excuse after excuse.  "They are young."  "Don't know how to play in the NHL." "First year head coach - he's going through his training."  " He's a good communicator."

This is pro sports which, unless I am mistaken is totally driven by success and results.  Scoreboard is king.  Anything short of that is unacceptable - unless you are on the ducks.

This losing thing is not new.  It is ingrained in the culture here.  I for one and tired of it.  Watching that game is the clincher for me.  That is 3 hours I will never get back...

It's what happens when a team does a rebuild especially a deep rebuild. Look at Buffalo, how many coaches have they gone through? Even Stanley Cup winning coaches. Winning coaches aren't a guarantee that you're going to turn things around. Bylsma struggled with the sabers and they fired him. Plenty of veteran coaches aren't able to turn teams around so it's really not a guarantee of anything.

When the Samueli family bought the team they stated that the goal was to be "Perennial playoff contenders, some years top 5, some more 10-15, but each year in the playoffs, and once you're in, anything can happen" - I liked that plan.

When people were calling for the hard reset to happen at around 17-19 seasons, citing the lack of high picks and lack of quality talent, Getz and Perry visibly regressing - I didn't like that plan.

Because I thought that roster could still be salvaged, kind of what the Kings are trying to do with 30+ Doughty and Kopitar - we could've shot for the same. Sure enough, I came to hate the full rebuild vehemently. The last 6 years have been easily the worst of my hockey fan experience. And still it looks like no end is in sight.

On to the next season, I guess. I still think the full teardown was a mistake. Wrong way. We could have transitioned smoother.

I was also opposed to the tanking until it seemed inevitable that it's what the team ultimately needed. I don't like the idea of losing but I came to accept it. As far as the full teardown, what could we have done differently? Resigned Lindholm? I think he was ultimately the guy who catapulted our demise to the bottom. One of the biggest mistakes was the expansion draft though. If we had kept Theodore maybe we could have salvaged that era but idk.

Are the “happy/rose glasses” available on Amazon? Maybe the team can create a “rose colored glasses promotion” night.

     I need a pair.

    Next year?

    Starting his HC career?

    I feel sick…

What are you talking about? What rose colored glasses? The season hasn't gone the way we wanted it to due to injuries (we've had quite a few to some of our key players), a young team still learning and a head coach in his first year. You're grabbing at that last point it seems so ok, let's say we picked up a "real head coach" (who was available? Laviolete? Idk let's just say we got him) and the team still struggled. What do we do, fire the head coach? We're we supposed to be a playoff team this season? I get that the season hasn't been very good but idk if you have a real solution here if we struggled. Are we then going to blame injuries? So are we going to give a "real coach" a pass if that happened and Cronin just gets the "you suck" tag? I understand I'm playing the 'what if' card here but so are you in thinking someone else would have been far better. Could BB have gotten more  wins? Sure. Playoffs? Maybe. But maybe he doesn't get more wins and we end up having to terminate his contract and end up with a whole debacle like Vancouver. All I'm saying is that I'm giving Cronin the benefit of the doubt in another season. If we go off the rails sometime by Thanksgiving next season I think Verbeek will change him out.

Eh, maybe im biased, but I think GMBM was a bit more successful at all this than Blake.

While we didn't make it back to the finals, 2008 - 2018 (11 seasons) we saw 9 playoff appearances, 6 playoff series wins, 5 division titles all while Getz and Perry were ages 22 --> 32.

In Blakes first 6 years as GM (not including this year), they have 3 playoff appearances, 0 playoff series wins, 0 division titles all while Kopi was 30-35 and Doughty was 28 - 33.

it's not an easy 1 to 1 comparison, but I still enjoyed the Ducks during those super successful years. Winning the cup is the goal, but having great seasons is also fun and worth something!

I wont defend the goaltending handling lol that was bad. and we all knew it as it happened.

There's only one winner per year, participation trophies aren't given out. But it's undeniable that when a team is at the top they have that chance to win. I think for a while we were right in the mix for the Cup. Those were disappointing seasons but so were 30 other franchises, but only disappointing because we didn't win it all. But really fun seasons, I'm hoping we can get back to that.

I can see the reason for Brown being let go but ultimately, the assistants are there to help implement Cronin's plan. I guess we'll see how this years roster and coaching staff does statistically after the end of the season compared to last years team under Eakins.

Sure, but I saw an interview not too long ago where Cronin mentioned something about him having a discussion about the way the pp was to be managed. Brown made a call to go one way and Cronin let him decide and he said it ultimately was the right decision. Something to that effect. I don't remember the details but it seems the assistants have some about of leeway on the decisions they make. Sure brown has a few that were good calls but he also has his share of many bad ones too.

Ultimately, the team is still young and learning and Cronin is very early in his career as HC in the NHL too. Hopefully both take big steps forward next year.

The other side of that was the Ducks were at least good enough last year to get games to overtime to get a point. This year they just lose in regulation and usually late in gsmes and they cant hold on. The other side as well is to say they have more wins then last year and less overtime losses. They also have more regulation losses this year then they did last year. So are we saying they are better because they have 2 more wins then last year or worse as they have 2 more losses.

They'll have more wins than last year that's for sure. I think this is also partly the reason why many argue the loser point needs to go away. Either way though this season hasn't gone the way we would have hoped. Injuries also haven't helped this season. Let's get some trades going and look to the future. I think if our play doesn't improve next season Cronin is probably going to be gone. I'm still hoping the assistants get changed out, or at the very least brown needs to go.

He’s giving off strong Bob Murray vibes:

wasting two franchise studs after Cup(s) - Getz and Perry

Bad goalie handling - Hiller and Gibson and Freddie

trading away studly kid Dman - Theodore

whiffing on a high first round pick - Ritchie

I mean to be fair when the Kings were winning none of this stuff really mattered but now that they're swirling the toilet.... eh it's the Kings so par for the course. Lol

His track record is abysmal. Coming up on his 7th year as GM.  He's in deep $h!t.  I think he gets bounced if they miss the playoffs or have another first round exit, especially if that process is ugly.

But wasn't he the gm that we are supposed to be envious of? The Kings could still turn it around this year I guess and win the cup and all will be forgotten, though it's not looking good for Blake.
