Oh, boy.  This kid is giving off great vibes.

Cutter and Z future goat line, calling it now before everyone gets on the bandwagon. Might as well dust off the wagon cause it's coming and it ain't stopping for nobody!!

And just as a refresher, here is the Ducks' history in the last five drafts/lotteries:

2019 - finished 8th OA; dropped one in the lottery and picked 9th (Zegras, Broberg went 8th)

2020 - finished 5th OA; dropped one in the lottery and picked 6th (Drysdale, Sanderson went 5th)

2021 - finished 2nd OA; dropped one and picked 3rd (McTavish, Beniers went 2nd)

    2022- finished 10th OA; picked 10th (Mintyukov)

2023 - finished 1st OA; dropped one in the lottery and picked 2nd (Carlsson, Bedard went 1st)

Be nice if they moved up for the first time in 6 drafts.

Idk I think the sharks get the number 1 OA. Just a gut feeling. The hawks pick 2nd and we get 3rd. I'd be nice to move up but I'm not holding my breath.

Over the glass should be the same as icing.  FO in your own end.  That's it.

The penalty for it is the dumbest penalty in sports.

That actually makes a lot of sense. It's basically a guy icing the puck but over the glass instead of down the ice. That would actually be a decent change. But I think if the change is made we'll see a lot more pucks over the glass delays. And I think that's what the rule is trying to avoid is a ton of delays.

I didn't pay close attention to his teams in Montreal, but in Boston he implemented a zone defense that prioritized net-front defense. By all accounts, his defensive structure allowed his team to play less frenetically, which led to fewer high danger scoring chances against due to fewer blown man-to-man coverages in high danger areas, and fewer penalties because his players weren't always chasing their marks all over the D-zone.

IMO, Cronin's man-to-man is not the right defensive structure for this current group. They don't skate well enough to keep up with the quicker, more skilled teams, and I also think some of the young players like McTavish and JLC just don't have the experience and knowledge base to read and react to plays yet, so they get caught hooking and holding and tripping guys from behind too often because they just can't keep up with the man-to-man system.

I've also been pretty vocal about Cronin's seeming lack of interest in holding guys accountable with ice time. Julien didn't have a problem sending messages. And perhaps most importantly, Julien has the credibility to do it. "Back when I was coaching Chara and Bergeron in the Cup Finals..." just carries a lot more weight than "Back when I was coaching Kiefer Sherwood in the 2nd round of the Calder Cup playoffs..." dontcha think?

Edit: If you're an Athletic subscriber, here's a good article about why a lot of teams are moving to zone defense too: https://theathletic.com/4980491/2023/10/25/nhl-zone-defense-man-coverage/. I'd really like to see these Ducks do the same.

I mean I could counter your issue with skill being that a lot of our skill guys were out for big portions of the season. We miss Zegras, big time. Look at the last game, everyone says Michigan's as easy blah blah, blah... what? Our guys, doesn't matter who it is, don't even consider the move. It's always pass so it becomes easier for the opposing team to figure out what's going to happen next because it's looking for that slot pass 100/100 times. Zegras adds a way different element. With him there's no knowing what he's going to do so it freezes the other team for a second and at that point he's got options (Michigan, wrap around or pass). This team NEEDS Zegras. Trading him would be the dumbest thing to do. Terry doesn't have that "it" factor. McT also no. Leo? Possibly. We need those skill guys to give us that extra advantage. Arguably we have more points this year if our top guys were healthy for the whole season.

Then you also mention it yourself, some of our guys are just too young still. We forget how young our top guys are and it's going to take some time to get used to playing the way we're supposed to. I think part of the reason Cronin is so frustrated and in his interviews says that he "just doesn't know" is because all these guys are still young and trying to figure the league out still. You can implement any system you like but the players need to learn what works and what doesn't work in this league to be successful at it. That takes time. If we've heard that it takes players about half a season to get fully comfortable when traded then it probably takes longer for guys to get settled into the league. Some players figure it out after a few years, like Terry. Others just have that skill to overpower, like Bedard. I don't see yet that McT, Leo, Zegras and to an extent Terry himself breakout into that next level. I think Zegras might be approaching that point because he started to figure out the defensive side of the game before his injury. Now it's a matter of putting it all together and you have a more complete player who scores and also is somewhat defensively responsible. McT is only in his second season as well so he needs to mature in his game and we'll hopefully see less penalties from him because he'll take that next step and become a better player. Cronin I think is frustrated because it's not happening fast enough. He can't teach them that part of the game because the players need to figure that out. And he refers to that when he says that they need to figure it out themselves because the systems are already gone over every single practice. I'm not sure why it's taking the veterans so long to get their stuff together but maybe after so many years of Eakins hockey we might be seeing some of the effects of a losing mentality. But we're only getting younger by letting our veterans go too so idk maybe we do try to bring in a Stamkos because we're going to need guys to sheppard our young guys along. The problem with our current veterans is that none of them were ever the top guys on their teams. I think we either bring in someone like Stamkos who can better relate to guys like Zegras and Terry or bring in a guy the likes of a Saku Koivu. I think Getzy became disinterested with the team and that leadership was gone from the locker room. After he left the void became even bigger. Killorn, Strome, Fowler, Rico, Silf etc just aren't cutting it. It's why the captaincy isn't so clear cut right now because the team is a mess. Anyway, I've been refraining from posting too much because like everyone else on this board I'm pretty tired of the losing. The team sucks. But I still see a possible silver lining here and I wanted to give my 2 cents. If you don't agree that's fine. I'm tired of the clown show on the ice and I'm getting tired of the negativity on this board too because it's become all doom and gloom. And just to be clear, people have a right to voice their frustrations with this team. The team deserves the bashing it gets because they're not playing much like one to begin with. PV and Cronin deserve to be called out on certain things too. I'm just hoping we don't have another season like this one because I'm not sure I can take it anymore. Rant over.

    RHD - Montour, Gudas, Luneau

    LHD - Fowler, Mintyukov, Zellweger

    Lacombe

    I could live with that.

Lacombe is the odd man out with Luneau and Zelly over him? I'm not so sure on Luneau. I think we might see him in the lineup occasionally and full time the following season. But just looking at those d pairs one player instantly makes the group much much better. It could work having three veterans and three young guys. I'm just not sure if Montour would come here.

    1) which is most of my problem with 80% of this forum.   It’s just old men or kids yelling at the sky.    GMPV says ummm, his inability to be a professional public speaker makes him bad at his job managing an NHL franchise.   When his track record is the assistant GM to the Tampa Bay now multiple time Stanley cup champions.  Building up that roster.

    2) I forget but we’re there a multitude of high end RW and RHD available last offseason?   Also yes it’s time to make some NHL moves in the off-season to improve the team.   Glad he said he’s willing to do that.

    3) This is such a great point, I desperately want to add a top 4 RHD to this roster.   Does what exactly ?    Give him trade leverage when trying to trade for one ? Or give him leverage when trying to sign a UFA.    Here is the list of right handed defenseman who are free agents.     4 of the top 5 in PPG are RFA’s and two of the top 9 are Klingberg and DeAngelo 😂.     https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2025/points-per-game/all/defense/all/desc/right?stats-season=2024

    4)  I don’t agree fully with the make or break year.   Just because I don’t think we are a playoff team yet, but definitely should be fighting for a WC2 spot for a little bit, unless everything breaks right for us in terms of health and major leaps from Leo / Z / McT / Zelly / Tristian / Pavel ….. with Cutter lighting the world on fire.   That’s asking for a lot in one offseason.    But they should all take steps, how big goes a long way with how we do next year.   And while I agree I think he needs to make a couple moves RW and RHD, it takes two to tango, he needs to find a trade partner or a UFA who is willing to come here.

    Zegras - Leo - ? (Addition)

    Cutter - Mctavish - Terry

    Vats - Strome - Killorn

    Jones - Isaac - Leason

          Fowler - Tristian

          Minty - Gudas

          LaCombe - Zelly

                  Gibson

                  Dostal

That top 9 is basically set, with Cutter maybe starting on a different line.   The 4th line is currently filled with 3 RFA’s so that could look completely different.    That Defense is pretty much set, Fowler is blocking Vaaks / Zelly (from playing his natural side).

Hvidston / Colagenlo / Myatovic / Warren / Tschigerl / Pitre / Sidorov, I think most of those guys are graduating to the AHL, which is when we see what McIlvane really has in terms of developing young talent ?

I for one am excited to see what a full offseason and one more summer of improvement from our young core brings.    And hopefully a lot more Sweetness played.

From that link you posted... are we possibly looking at a Monty reunion? I mean he'd probably be pretty expensive but maybe for a 2-3 year deal I'd be fine with that. He's also only 30 and tops the RD ufa list.

Improving the bottom 6 can mean improving the top 6 and pushing some guys currently in top 6 roles into the bottom six.

Strome, Vatrano, Killorn, Gauthier could all be options for a strong 3rd line.

McTavish or Zegras could be an option for 3C if they put two of Carlsson, McT and Zegras in the 1C/2C. As could Gauthier.

Lundestrom could be a good option for 3C or 4C.

Improving the bottom 6 is not exclusive to just bringing in new guys for the bottom 6. And I don’t think GMPV thinks he currently has all 6/7/8 guys he wants for the top 6. I know many on here think he’s an idiot, but I am not willing to believe he is that big of an idiot.

He said he is done with the “accumulating assets” part of rebuilding and is ready for the “acquiring players” part.

I think he acquires a Top 6 NHL F over the summer. Even if they end up drafting Celebrini.

    Just for fun:

    Zegras/Carlsson/FA or trade guy

    Gauthier/McTavish/Terry

    Vatrano/Celebrini/Killorn

Lundestrom/Strome/new guy they just got from COL

That allows a lot of flexibility with line combos and a lot of flexibility in-game to roll whatever line is cooking that particular game.

Agreed. We're likely picking up a top 6 F either ufa or trade. I'd like to start using our draft picks to trade for players. The likelihood of those picks actually becoming nhl players is fairly low so getting someone you already know would make a lot of sense.

Doubtful we draft celebrini though.... but that lineup looks pretty good to me.

Defensively a small improvement, offensively doing worse, overall result same as last year, just giving up less goals whole scoring less.

I mean considering the amount of man games lost this season it's not really surprising that we've been scoring a little less. We've now turned the page on some guys and probably a few more leave after the season is over. Kind of a bummer that we weren't able to get any prospects from some of the trades and that waiver pickup is weird. Whatever. We move on from some of these guys and I hope we don't bring Rico back. I get that people are saying that they'd resign him but honestly I think we need new blood in the locker room. I want some changes and new guys coming in. Hopefully less injuries as well. I know you're not a fan of Cronin but I think we can both agree the assistants need to go. Hopefully a few good ufa signings or even trades. I'd like to see some changes and I think we'll see a more improved roster next year. But we've been saying that for the past few off seasons so I'm not as enthusiastic about it but I'm excited by the changes coming. I really don't want Zegras to be traded. Hopefully we keep him and he continues to grow both offensively and defensively. Overall I think I'm going to be a bit more reserved about our trajectory. But I think we can at least agree that the injuries have taken a big toll on this group. We'll see. Hopefully be able to get guys back from injury soon here for the final games of the season.

Do you think when people called years ago asking about Getzlaf, the phone wasn't hung up?  What about Bedard in Chicago or McDavid in Edmonton?  Do you think there was listening going on?  When you're high on a player, and intend to keep him in the fold for the long term, you are probably of the understanding that there is no offer out there you're willing to take.  Obviously, for Zegras, there is a price Verbeek would consider, otherwise he'd hang up.

Dude, Gretzky got traded. Everyone has a price, even McDavid. It's going to be a really really high price but it's still there. Doubt anyone hangs up the phone when they're asked about McDavid. You hear what the offer is. Fortunately for Edmonton that price is so high the other team would have to gut their team, aka it ain't happening. But don't tell me no one called about Mathews when his contract was coming up...

Why would hosting an all star game or draft boost the morale of players? 99% of players wont be in ot and the draft has nothing to do with current players. Doesnt really boost a fans morale either. Yay we get an all star game where nobody comes to play. That's a pretty bad statement, but not really surprised.

I don't even live in the area and I'd want us to get the all star and draft! It would boost my morale!!! 💪

  11. I thought Rico was a bad veteran and made so many mistakes the some on here almost have aneurysms... huh I personally liked Rico and really wanted him to succeed. I think it's best to move on for both sides. We need to get younger and bringing him back doesn't help us do that. Let's bring in guys a little younger with more upside.

  12. 34 minutes ago, dtsdlaw said:

Would you re-sign this summer under any circumstances?

Don't think he's going to resign. I think he may be going back to New Jersey or the new York area in free agency. Thanks Rico!

I would like to see a simple rule change that the cap hit of a team’s starting 20-man roster has to be under the cap for every playoff game. Scratches can be over the cap, but it would seem more fair if the 20 guys on the ice weren’t $10M over on their own.

That could work as well but then you'd have the issue of teams lowering the price of rentals because you might not be able to use that player. But that would make the games a lot more fair.

  14. 3 hours ago, Duckboy93 said:

Except this is becoming a common occurrence for Vegas and Stone. He gets “injured” placed on IR only to miraculously become healed for game one of the playoffs after they make a big splash at the trade deadline to bring in another big name

What they need to do is have some kind of cap implications for the following season. Like if the injured player comes back after the regular season ends and during the first three games of the playoffs then they should incur a 50% (or even 100%) cap recapture penalty on the remaining cap hit of the player starting from the day they aquired him (regardless of any retained cap). And if the injured player does come back for the final 5 games of the regular season  (anything less will incur the same cap penalty) then no cap penalty will apply towards next season. I think this may be too complicated in regards to injured players and teams likely wouldn't like it (especially the bigger teams that do this) but it would bring some fairness to this current setup. Obviously teams with truly injured players who would legitimately fall into this penalty would be really upset but I think you gotta do something. It's getting blatantly obvious what teams are doing and it's ridiculous.

Would assume this means Gibby isn't going anywhere before Friday...

It was unlikely to begin with. They could still recall him since it's close by but unlikely Gibson will be traded.

  16. 36 minutes ago, dtsdlaw said:

He's 20. In goalie prospect years, that's basically infancy.

It's actually pretty remarkable what he's done already this season at his age in the AHL. He basically forced the team to send Calle Clang to the ECHL because he was outplaying Clang so badly. I'm also a bit surprised that he wasn't drafted considering the draft profiles seemed to believe that he had a ton of raw talent that could be developed, but once upon a time we had an undrafted guy from Switzerland named Jonas Hiller join the organization at the ripe old age 25, and he turned out pretty well. My worry about Suchanek is that he's likely on a lot of radars thanks to his performance against Canada at the 2022 U20 WJCs. I think that if Beeker doesn't sign him sooner than later, another smart GM is going to swoop in and grab him.

If we're not going to sign him, could we trade him? Oh probably not through since we're not officially contracted with him right?

  17. 2 hours ago, dtsdlaw said:

Suchanek is 20 and would be signing an ELC so I would assume he’d be waivers exempt.

Ok that makes sense, then I'm wondering why he hasn't been signed yet. If he'd be signing an elc wouldn't his play this season burn a year off? I believe he's currently on an ahl only deal would he still be able to sign an elc? Maybe they're just waiting until the end of the season to make that decision to keep him or not but I think it's pretty obvious at this point. So not sure what they're waiting on.

    10 hours ago, Aksun said:

I'm sorry I can't answer that I've never read the rulebook, but that is a good question. Perhaps, with just 20-ish games left on the season, the plan for either MC or Suchanek is to be started next season the earliest and forego this season altogether.

Max signed through the end of this season so I'm assuming they want him to play fairly soon here.

THIS 💯 Then Gibby is expendable and we run Dostal - Suchanek as the young core and never have the horrible long discussions again...

Wouldn't Max still need to pass through waivers first to play in the NHL this season? Doubt anyone would pick him up but wouldn't Suchanek possibly get picked up?

  19. 23 minutes ago, saskduckfan said:

Too much money and no longer produces. Do we really want an $8mil player who may score 1 goal. I'll pass. It would just be wasted money on washed up talent.

End up with another Klingberg situation. Overpaid and the return might be little. I'd rather spend that money in ufa. Pass.

  20. 15 minutes ago, perry_mvp said:

It should start with the HC. That's why I bring up Lindy Ruff putting the blame for the Devils season on himself.

But you're comparing an established coach with a first year one. It's not quite the same circumstances. Cronin gets more leeway here. At least for me he does.
