I just wonder how different the team would look now if instead of picking Drysdale, Murray would have picked Holtz and instead of picking McTavish, Murray would have picked Luke Hughes.

Assuming everything else was the same, then my guess is that Connor Geekie is the Ducks at pick #10 in 2022 rather than Mintyukov. Sliding doors, though. Who knows.

    This also.

Since the solution is external, I can understand being quiet about them and naming any players. That is common GM operating procedure. If he rolls with those three on the right side next season then he’s setting himself up to be out of a job sooner than he ever thought

perry_mvp's fear is also my fear... Luneau, Gudas, Lindstrom, and a LHD (Zelly, JLC, or Lagesson) as this team's depth on the right side next season. I don't think it's an unwarranted fear either. It could totally happen.

That's why I call him Grumpy.

And his game isn't worth $6.25M and I didn't think it would be.

He IS the veteran on the team. He's 34, won two cups and has the experience and should be the voice in the locker room.

Cronin, Killorn, Verbeek. This is their first time in the spotlight. Cronin was an assistant coach in the NHL, Grumpy (I guess) was an assistant C in Tampa and Verbeek was an assistant in Tampa and Detroit. They didn't have to bare the brunt when things weren't going well before.

8 goals in his last 13 games and he's the TOI/game leader among forwards. Maybe he's not a leader in the way we'd hoped he'd be, but he's not rolling over and playing dead like some of our other overpaid vets are.

it doesn't seem like the referees want to call penalties on our opponents.  i don't know if it's a natural reaction to us committing more callable penalties, or if it's how we interact with the referees.

i'm suspicious about the referees because they often call more penalties on our opponents when the opponent's record is poor.  i know that's a chicken and egg thing, but it often looks like the referees are more willing to ignore penalties when the player committing them is a big league deal, and they're more willing to call penalties when the player getting fouled is a big deal... on a big deal team.  we aren't a big deal team, and we have very few big deal players.

i'm sure referee eyes tend to linger on the higher performing players more often, and that the puck is with those players more often... but taking it all into account, i see a lot of subjectivity in NHL referees.

    how to combat the disparity:

    1) commit less - what i see is a lot of failures in mental discipline, coupled with hockey naiveté (letting the other team draw penalties using fairly common tricks of the trade).

    2) train up on drawing penalties.  we are absolutely horrible at it.  it's a skill, just like faceoffs.  i'd rather have a reputation as a diving team than a -60 penalty differential.  all the other teams do it, so it's a competitive disadvantage NOT to practice it.

    3) talk with the referees much much more.  figure out how to have a relationship with them game after game.  go eavesdrop when the other teams talk to the referee (which they do way, WAY more often than we do - something like 2-10x more in any one game).

    4) talk with each other before sending someone to go talk to the referee.  get the story straight.  be a benefit to the refs, not a constant complainer.

    5) Possess the puck more. Penalties are more often called against the team without the puck when defending in their own zone against the team with the puck. The Ducks turned into a terrible possession team under Carlyle 2.0 and never looked back, so I'm not surprised there's a big disparity in penalties too. Possession doesn't account for all of the disparity, but it definitely contributes to it.

Given what verbeek has said about young players coming into the league, I doubt that he’s going to think luneau is going to be the answer, especially after not playing in a game for 10 months. My concern is if the infection did any damage to the bone, joint or caused any structural damage. It sounds as though the Ducks aren’t worried about that. Fingers crossed

Even if luneau was ready to go and be an NHLer to start next year, he still needs a RHD to help with that transition and to be there for when Gudas is gone in two years.

Or as insurance if Gudas' game falls off a cliff. Gudas has been awesome this season for us, but he turns 34 in June and he plays a very physical style that isn't usually conducive to playing defense at a high level through your mid-30s.

Hvidston / Colagenlo / Myatovic / Warren / Tschigerl / Pitre / Sidorov, I think most of those guys are graduating to the AHL, which is when we see what McIlvane really has in terms of developing young talent ?

Tschigerl is long gone. Verbeek didn't qualify him last summer so the Ducks lost his rights. I believe he went to training camp with the Kings but didn't get a contract.

My main gripe with Verbeek is that he sounds like Luneau is going to be the only thing he needs to do on defense. The other gripe is accountability. I don't know which season he's been watching but the veterans he has brought in sans Gudas don't look like they very much care. There seems to be a disconnect between them and Cronin which a blind man could have seen a mile away.

I agree for the most part except for this bolded part when it comes to Killorn. Granted I have not been watching all the games lately (because most have been unwatchable), but although Killer has taken a lot of bad/unnecessary penalties and I don't think he's been as productive as we'd hoped for, I don't really see him playing at 80% effort like some of the other vets appear to be doing on the regular. Is his game worth $6.25M? Heck, no. But IMO he does look and play like he cares (at least in the games I've watched). In fact, he looks pretty pi$$ed off at the way the season has gone, in contrast to some other veterans who look like they're just cashing game checks.

Here's my $.02 - which has an actual value of much less:

    3.  I don't expect any GM to be 100% honest and truthful with the media/public/fans at an event like this, an event that is easily viewable by anyone with an internet connection.  Why would you show all your cards to your competitors?  I'm gonna give him a pass on not laying out his complete plan with all his moves and details at this event.  That would be odd.

I understand the sentiment here, but does anyone really believe that the 31 other NHL GMs look at our organizational depth and think to themselves "oh yeah, the Ducks are set at top-4 RHD. I'm sure they won't be looking to sign or trade for one". C'mon, if Verbeek told the SSHs that his team's #1 need was a RHD for next season, literally every other GM would respond with "oh good, water is still wet."

NHL GMs are paid big bucks to know everything about every team and every player in the league, and they have well paid employees who scours the reserve lists of every team in the league to make sure they know everything about everyone that they could possibly trade for or sign to make their team better. Don't assume for one moment that Verbeek scouting Nesterenko as a college junior last season (despite him being on the Wild's reserve list) was some unique thing that only Verbeek does. I'd bet large sums of money that every team in the league knows the ins and outs of our organizational depth better than every poster on this board combined. They actually pay people to know these things. So outside of specifically naming a UFA and a sum of money that he wanted to offer to that particular player, I don't think there's anything that Verbeek could have said to the crowd that all 31 other teams wouldn't already know about the Ducks' needs for next season.

I am not wishing, those plus helleson are our only prospects.   Unless Rodwin can play the right side.

I do think Tristian is a legit top 4 defenseman.   He did make the club as a 19 year, and looked good.   Hopefully he can get and stay healthy.

Zellweger, Luneau, Warren, and Moore. That's three guys we drafted in the 2nd round and one in the 3rd. If we get two top-4 D-men to play the right side out of those four guys, Martin Madden should get a statue in front of Honda Center.

Zelly / Tristian / Warren / Moore / …… but honestly …… unless Tristian is HIM, we need help there.   It would be nice if a Vaaks / LaCombe / Hinds could play their off side, or we have to trade some of them.

It seems Zelly has been playing RD on the Gulls for a reason, and it was to prepare him to maybe play their long term at the NHL level.

Lots of wishing and hoping going on there.

Luneau not playing actual games for 10 months really hurts and I’m more concerned about him being 100% with no lingering issues from the infection.

If he’s serious about this team taking a step next year then he needs to address both positions. The draft will be a fascinating because it’s really one where it’s so hard to predict what he’ll do. My take is that he will take a RHD with the first pick unless they win the Celibrini sweepstakes. I don’t think he looks at luneau and warren and thinks it’s enough going forward.
They’ll also just need a RHD to take on that mentor/transition role once Gudas’ contract is up in 2026

I think you're probably right, but what does that do for us next season? Or the season after that? I can't help but look at the development curves of Nemec and Jiricek and think that even if we get the very best RHD in this draft, Verbeek is going to be on his second and maybe even third head coach by the time that player is a legit top-4 RHD for us.

we’ve moved past the drama a bit, but I found this interesting. Something most certainly happened behind the scenes.

I believe Kurt Overhardt is the agent. Same agent as TT and Gibby. Overhardt has two Philly players at the moment - Johansen and a 21-year-old 6'3", 205lb RHD named Helge Grans that was drafted by the Kings at # 35 overall (2020) and was sent to Philly in the Provorov trade that got Cal Petersen off of Rob Blake's conscience payroll.

Hmmm... I wonder if Verbeek could be calling about Grans too as a favor to Overhardt?

I’m not giving up those picks either and using the gaucher pick to add a defenseman makes sense. If he doesn’t add a RHD this summer then I think it’s going to be a big problem. He only talked about the RH winger which he also definitely needs. He’ll have the flexibility to get both

I am actually pretty shocked that he didn't specifically identify top-4 RHD as his #1 goal this summer. I don't even really care about adding another right-shot winger. I think he could simply add a 3C this summer and have a pretty solid top-9 heading into next season, with the expectation that Carlsson and McTavish take another step and Zegras returns to full-time status (which will be almost like adding another high end free agent).

But RHD... holy crap is that a glaring need. Even more so since Luneau is going to end up missing almost an entire season of development due to his staph infection. I seriously wonder what is going through Verbeek's mind when he looks at the current organizational depth at RHD heading into next season...

    Gudas (34)

    Lindstrom (25)

    Helleson (23)

    Luneau (20)

    Warren (20)

    Ian Moore (22) (unsigned)

    William Francis (23) (unsigned)

    Vojtech Port (19) (unsigned)

... and says that a right-shot top-6 forward and better bottom-6 forwards are the organization's biggest targets this summer so that this team can return to the playoffs next season.

I get what you’re saying, but Fox chose to go the rangers….. would love it if we got someone to do that for the ducks.    Also, I think we are building the defense, they just take longer than forwards to make an impact at the NHL level.    We were so bare of talent anywhere, we really had to do BPA for the last 5 years.

and I truly believe we rostered an AHL defense last year on purpose to try and give us the best chance at Bedard.   And we did just that, and ping pong balls F’ed us.

Curious, who is in your top-4 on the right side for the next five seasons from what Verbeek has already "built"?

Don’t necessarily disagree about bolstering the defense. Kane (2007) and Toews (2006) were drafted 3-4 years before both Keith (2002) and seabrook (2003). Lindholm (2012), Manson (2011) were draft 7-8 years before Zegras in 2019 when the Ducks had their first top-10 pick. So, the timing issue was definitely a factor. We had key defensemen hitting UFA status before the young guys ever got enough time to start playing in the NHL. Chicago had time that we didn’t imo

In the wake of Lindholm and Manson being traded, I guess the debate is whether Verbeek could have feasibly added someone like a Hamilton to make sure that the defense was on much better footing.

No chance that I would have traded the picks that became Carlsson and Mintyukov, but aside from those two guys Verbeek had an extra 1st and five 2nds in the past two drafts, along with a boatload of defensive prospects that there won't be space for long-term anyway. So he's clearly had the assets to find top-4 D-men, but instead he decided to throw $7M at John Klingberg and sign a career 3rd-pair guy in Gudas (who I love, but he doesn't come close to solving the top-4 RHD issue). That's my biggest complaint about Verbeek's rebuild.

Our young 'talent' is Shroedingers Talent: we don't know if it really is. Potential is one thing, delivering on it is another, just ask Maxime Comtois. Or Bobby Ryan.

I would not do anything because I'm not the GM. I am the team's fan on an online forum. Maybe it's for the best that I'm not allowed anywhere near the team's management corps.

I think where Verbeek went wrong is taking the slower approach to an already slow rebuild that Bob hesitantly and clumsily started. He didn't put enough effort into convincing Lindholm to stay, preferring the easy out in trading him - and almost everywhere he preferred to pick up picks instead of going for solid talent and now we are devoid of it. All we've got are hopeful rookies and washed up veterans.

This is part of it. My problem with Verbeek's rebuild is how he has prioritized getting veteran forwards to play with the kids rather than prioritizing putting a strong defense in place. It's the same mistake that Buffalo made when they were drafting Reinhart, Eichel, etc. Buffalo thought they could just have mediocre 3rd pair D-men to plug in with young blue chip draft picks like Ristolainen and that would be enough for the team to grow together. Wrong.

Most successful rebuilds prioritize getting their defense squared away first. Chicago had Keith and Seabrook in place long before Kane and Toews showed up. The Rangers organization sent a letter to SSHs in February 2018 announcing that they are going to do a full tear-down rebuild, and then by June 2019 they had acquired Trouba and Fox via trade. The Devils prioritized the "build" portion of their rebuild by getting Dougie Hamilton in UFA. This is what works or rebuilding teams - get that defense in place and then let the young forwards and D-men work their way into the mix.

Verbeek? He trades away Manson and Lindholm, brings in a $7M John Klingberg and a cart full of scrubs (Beaulieu, Benoit, Harrington, and Kulikov) for one season, and then expects Fowler to play 26 minutes per night on his off-side as the Ducks #1 with a bunch of rookies the following season. I love the potential talent we have percolating in Anaheim, but if you want to look for reasons why the rebuild is slow, start there.

Yes - intent to add more talent, another top 6 winger, this summer. Want more right hand shots.  Want a stronger bottom 6.

says we’re failing in our bottom six relative to the league.

Leo - suffered a concussion, back for Minn.

Z - Leo and McT are our centers, Z is wing.

    Why worse home record?

I don’t know, players try to do too much at home (he guesses).

    Laine is a right-shot.

After the entry draft exactly ZERO people - from insiders to experts to fans - thought that roster wasn't gonna be anything other than not good.  For good reason.  There were no indicators at all that the roster they compiled would become the team they did.

They were able to SOAK opposing GM's for draft picks, and when that super "meh" team got out of the gates and were just boat racing every team in the league - all season long - then they had something.  They knew they would be able to supplement that roster with vets by trading away draftees and prospects.

How many original misfits are on the roster right now?  I think it's 4 - Karlsson, Marchessault, McNab, and Theodore.

    + William Carrier

Looks like the Ducks are done with any trades.  Overall I give Pat a B+ for this trade deadline.  Now I just want a healthy roster, with Cutter in the line up (at some point), so we can see where this team needs help most.

Not so sure. The Lagesson waiver claim is very weird if they don't do something else.
