Ducks have 45 SPCs now so they can still sign Gauthier, colangelo, hvidston, king and Moore if all theoretically want to sign barring they don’t take on another contract.

Which of those guys need a contract that applies to the 2023-24 season? Chances are Gauthier is going to get one so that he can burn a year from his ELC, but everyone else seems likely to get an ATO for this season and an ELC that starts in 2024-25.

Katchouk has surprisingly good underlying numbers for a guy on Chicago.

Meh. Zegras, McTavish and McGinn are all skating and are likely to return soon. Terry's injury doesn't sound serious.  I'd rather just use our fill-ins until all of our guys return. Assuming Vatrano doesn't get moved, when healthy we're looking at something like:

    Vatrano-McTavish-Terry

    Zegras-Carlsson-Killorn

    Lundestrom-Strome-Silfverberg

    Jones-Groulx-Leason

    [McGinn/Johnston]

I don't see much point in adding more 4th liners to that group.

The quality of player that Kakko is so astronomically better than the Ducks have had on their 3rd line of in probably like 5 years since prime Silfverberg

    Killorn-Strome-Kakko

Would be nice to start next season with that as a 3rd line.

Somebody please explain me why some people are so high on Kakko?

I looked at his statistic and seems like he is a bust who was taken as a 2nd overall pick. This season his numbers are slightly better than Max Jones. Besides, he is injury-prone and soft, according to NY Rangers fans. If you go to BlueshirtBrotherhood.com, Rangers fans want to trade him so badly, I wonder why? I know Ducks current and former managers have an affection for failed 1st round picks, but don't we have enough warm bodies on this roster?  Ducks need some REAL, PROVEN scorers, not another player who "needs a fresh start", we had enough of those in the past.

He's had injury problems this season, but he played a full 82 games in 2022-23 and had 18G/22A on the Rangers' 3rd line while getting barely any power play time. He was actually the 5th best forward on the Rangers last season in even strength points. That's why I don't think the Rangers are too keen on trading him, and why a lot of us like him. He could very easily bounce back and be a 20-25 goal guy for the rest of his career in somebody's top-6.

if he does then that is just another failure of this organization to develop forwards.

I blame covid more than the organization. He was forced to be in San Diego too early. He really needed more time in juniors and a slower development path. He didn't belong in the AHL playing against grown men at age 18. It kind of ruined his development.

Watch Perreault pop off now lol. Actually had an element and upside up his game that we lack

    now, I gotta research mysack

He wasn't thriving here though. It was tough to watch him just going through the motions shift after shift in San Diego. His game lacked energy and he was never going to make it to the big show if he stayed. I think it's a good move to send him back home to Montreal. I hope the kid can sort things out and find another gear. Best of luck to him.

They can always trade frank for kakko essentially it’s the same deal. They do need someone on the third line.

There are too many wingers still available that the Rangers could plug in on their 3rd line for a much cheaper price. Eberle, Toffoli, Zucker, Duclair, etc. They don’t need to give up a young player who scored 18 goals last season to fill that spot. Besides, Vatrano has been largely invisible at 5-on-5 when he’s away from McTavish. He needs linemates who excel at creating space for him and can make clean small area passes that he can one-time, or else he’s just another guy. Like last night - 0 shots for him despite 22:30 of TOI. Vatrano doesn’t create his own offense very often.

    I would resign, lower AAV.

I would too. Two years at most though. I wonder if a 2 x $4M would get it done. That would take him off the books when Leo, Minty, Zelly, and Cutter are due for new contracts.

rumored contract extension also. Vegas went to the Tampa bay school of cap circumvention

Huh. Can't wait to see which current roster player they cut the heart out of to make this trade happen. Maybe McNabb? He's an original misfit, so he's probably overdue for a knife in the back, eh?

Hmm.  I think we still have Silf (need a cap partner for that), Vaaks, Lundestrom, Votrano (might need a cap partner) in the mix, and maybe Stalock.  Silf is too expensive probably to trade at this point, even with a 3 way.  there's still time to work on a complex deal though!

We also didn't take back any contracts in either trade so far, and the Ducks have plenty of cap space, so you have to wonder if Verbeek is in the mix to take on a cap dump or two. We only have 44 contracts on the books (soon to be 45 when Cutter signs), and with all of the injuries we've had it might make some sense to take on a contract or two in exchange for more assets. Vegas is currently sitting on 49 contracts and Boston and Toronto both have 48 on the books, and none of those teams have made their moves yet.

Maybe they leave it at that and won´t go after Vatrano. I hope we stays. We need goals.

Although I still wouldn´t rule out the canes who so far have done nothing.

They’re probably still working on that sign-and-trade Guentzal for Necas deal.

You might be able to move him for a first next year. You definitely could love him for more now, which is my argument. Feels like not maximizing your assets, but it’s not a massive failure I guess

Verbeek may not have gotten the green light from ownership to retain on Vatrano's contract next season. I can't think of an instance where the Ducks have done that in the past, and I get the feeling that the Samuelis are against paying a player to play for someone else for a whole season.

That said, NYR might still be able to squeeze his cap hit in. Capfriendly says they still have the space, and I wouldn't be shocked to see someone like Adam Edstrom come back to Anaheim in the trade. A 1st (2025) + Edstrom is probably Vatrano's true value to the Rangers.
