Correct, but I highly doubt 4 teams lower then them right now are your final 4.

You're right, it's not likely. But currently behind them are Carolina, Toronto, Vegas, LA, Tampa, Detroit, and Nashville. And anything is possible in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

If the Oilers make the conference finals the pick is no higher then 29. The 2 conference final losers get 29 and 30 and Stanley Cup finalists 31 and 32.

Correct, thanks. And if four teams currently lower than Edmonton in the standings make the conference finals, then the pick is #21, right? (assuming no change to the standings)

Another moving part is that both Carrick and Henrique were retained, Ducks have 1 more retention slot

Did they retain on Carrick too? I thought they only retained on Rico. If they retained on Carrick, they're out of retention spots.

    Edit.... Damn. :(

It's not good for LaCombe since he's being scratched all the time now.

And they have Hagg and Colton White available for a call up if needed. I think Vakkanainen has played his way into having some decent value to a contender too. Especially at $850K.

I strongly believe the lure for Gauthier was burning off a year and starting the big payday sooner. If BU tanks we see him in April for some games 💯%

I know, between Vegas and Colorado they literally have NO CHANCE in the West, I keep saying the same. But since it is technically a pretty shallow draft, outside of the top-5 of the 1st round the difference between picking 25th and 35 is miniscule. What matters is we got the darts for the dart board that Verbeek coveted so much, how he uses them is a different thing altogether. Just pointing out to Sask that 25th or 35th doesn't really matter if you pick guys like Myatovic (sorry Bombay).

I've heard that there's a significant drop off after around 20 or 21. But what if two lower seeds make the Cup finals? That pick is now #23 overall. And then you have to wonder if the #23 + #35 gets Verbeek back into the top-20, right?

I see now what you're saying and the point you were trying to make to the other poster, but I just don't think we should minimize this return. Edmonton's 1st rounder is a good thing.

Has gaucher been good enough to warrant consideration for a spot next year? I really don’t know how he’s looking in San Diego.

gauthier is almost certain to primarily be a winger when gets here.

    Not yet. He's still cooking.

So essentially the boys were traded for an early-ish 2nd rounder just like you foretold. The pick can then be packaged for some young stud in the summer and whatnot. Both Rico and Carrick are expiring and had 20 games left. I think it's pretty decent value for nothing AND we get 2 spots for rookies like Gauthier to try out at the end of the season.

Why would you say this? Edmonton is currently 5th in the West and 8th in the NHL. If the standings don't change and they don't make the Cup final, that pick is #25 overall.

I disagrees you can get a 3rd for a Carrick. Beek backaches them to get the first in my opinion.

Think carrick might’ve pushed it to a first, supposedly there’s a third team involved. Most likely getting carrick for a pick and salary Retention and sending a breathing player back.

I dunno, Derek Grant got a 4th in 2020 when he had 14G and had been playing up and down the lineup. I don't think Carrick gets you more than or even equal to that. Slightly better players went for 4th rounders last year too, such as Namestnikov and Sundqvist, As much as I like Carrick (and I hope he boomerangs in the summer) I don't think his value on the open market is anywhere near as high as it is to Ducks fans.

I don’t get this. Verbeek got more for Henrique than you thought he would so now it’s not that Verbeek did something good but the draft class sucks and holland does also?

Also, he got more than I predicted. I thought he’d get a Manson return

It's called sour grapes. No sense in trying to rationalize it.

Why?  If you have money, you can spend it.  If you want to overpay, you can.  If you want to sit a very valuable and expensive player who is "hurt" to then add another valuable and expensive player, you can do it.

The cap is the same for every team.  The cap circumvention is the same for every team.

Every single GM signed off on it.

Because the MLB and NBA suck. I don't want an NHL that has the haves and the have nots, and that's exactly what cap circumvention is - a way to get AROUND the cap. It's not good for our game.

btw, I'm not going to argue anymore about it in this thread. This is for the TDL.

Seems like they sold low on Carrick to get that first rounder. Good work. Now flip it for an established young player

I don't think Carrick was worth anything more than a 5th on his own, and Rico for a 1st always felt right. Sending them together is probably what got the condition attached to the 5th. This whole trade feels spot on to me.

Props to the Beeker for getting this one right!

But any team can do it.  So, no one team has that particular advantage over another.

The rules say that anyone can do it, but can they really do it in practicality? The league has already admitted there is a significant imbalance in revenue and the ability to spend money on players by instituting the revenue sharing model. Saying that "any team can do it" is like saying why don't the Oakland As just spend $200 million on their payroll like the Yankees and Dodgers since the rules allow for it?

Crack open another monster and do something, Beeker!

    Return is only a 3rd and a 4th rounder.

Keep in mind that Tarasenko has a full no trade clause, so Ottawa's hands were probably tied. Tarasenko basically got to tell them where he wanted to go and they had to figure out how to get him there. I don't think this says anything about the market value for Henrique.
