  1. I agree. It would have to be a very cheap contract from a contending team. Most of those teams are going to be close to the cap ceiling along with having their rosters mostly set. If he’d been bought out before July 1st, then I think that he’d have a much bigger market. In theory, that should actually help the Ducks chances at signing him. Anaheim can offer him more $ and a greater role but I don’t think he’s going to come to a rebuilding team that’s on the opposite side of the country from his home.
  2. Yeah, I guess it depends on what he wants. Most contending teams don't have the cap space to give him $3-4 mil, so he'd have to take a very cheap contract to go on a team like that. If he wants to go that route then I think that Nashville makes the most sense (adding another RHD after losing Subban). The Ducks are in a position to offer him more money but I don't get the sense that he'd even want to come to Anaheim. My guess is that he'd want stay closer to home on the east coast, especially since he and his wife just had their first kid.
  3. Assuming he’d be willing to sign on the west coast, I think that Murray should kick the tires on him if he’s not going to trade for a RHD. The Ducks need to improve that position so badly and Shattenkirk would be an upgrade at a huge discount to what he was getting paid by New York.
  4. Shattenkirk could be on the verge of being bought out. This could end up right in Murray’s free agent wheelhouse lol
  5. It's not a bad idea at all, but I agree that Murray probably doesn't even have this on his radar. First thing would be to find out if the Ducks are on his no-trade list. I'd feel much better about moving draft picks in a deal if the Ducks had extra picks to move or if the player was better. I guess you could move Ritchie/Sprong at some point to help recoup lost picks though. Shattenkirk certainly has the ability to QB the power play which is something that Murray has said that he wants. His underlying stats aren't awful but definitely not worth his cap hit, so getting him with salary retained by the Rangers could provide value. I'd see him has being paired with Fowler since I don't think he's a top pairing guy but having two defensemen who are offense-first (Shattenkirk being more so) concerns me a little bit. I just don't know if that pairing could actually defend together and Shattenkirk last thrived when he was playing with a very good unit of Pietrangelo, Parayko and Boumeester in St. Louis. I think that all three of those guys are better defensively than the Ducks top-4. With the Rangers having Trouba, DeAngelo, and now Fox on the right side, it seems that they would want to move Shattenkirk out regardless of their cap situation. Their rebuild timeline really sped up this offseason by adding Panarin, Trouba and Kakko. They have a legit chance of competing for a wild card spot next season.
  6. My biggest grip with this trade is giving up a draft pick for someone that you shouldn't give up a draft pick for, let alone a 4th rounder. Deslauriers isn't going to take a top-9 spot (if he does then this season will be ugly). To me, Perry's buyout is for Troy Terry more than anyone else, then possibly Sprong, assuming that he isn't traded. Terry is going to need those Perry minutes, especially on the PP. As dtsdlaw said, he might force Rowney over to RW and freeze out Sherwood, who I think deserves every opportunity to secure that spot. Murray talked about sheltering and protecting the kids and I guess this is part of objective. As of now, he doesn't appear to be concerned with addressing things like goal scoring or defense lol
  7. That's a really good deal for Dallas. They see their window and are swinging for the fences. Good to know that while Dallas is going all-in Murray is choosing to just needlessly throw away draft picks and create an unnecessary logjam on the wing in the process
  8. I agree that you can’t compare Teemu and Perry given the styles they played and that their bodies aren’t the same. Not to mention that Selanne was one of the best skaters of his era. Teemu also benefitted from the lockout so he was able to fully recover before playing again. As far as Perry not scoring 30 again, I can actually see him doing it. He’s still got enough talent, will to go along with yhe chip on his shoulder now. If the young guys coming up can put up 40 points (around Nick Ritchie level production) then I’ll be satisfied, even if that’s where they top out at.
  9. I think that there are better odds of the Ducks moving his contract to Seattle if they can’t buy him out. Is Jovanovski the only hockey player that’s done this procedure and come back? Yeah. When Perry comes off the books the Ducks will just under $40 mil in cap space and could get over $45 mil if Kesler’s contract is moved. Manson, Lindholm, Rakell would need new contracts at that time if they are going to remain in Anaheim, Getzlaf can be extended next summer so there will be ample money. It’s not ideal but it’s not like Kesler’s contract is going to prevent the Ducks from contending during that time. The Ducks are handcuffed by lack talent/ going through a youth transition. The next couple of seasons are about seeing how that youth pans out. IMO.
  10. I’d just feel more optimistic if there was a bigger sample size of hockey players than just Jovanovski to go off of. Plus, Kesler also has a greater history of hip issues between the two. Assuming he is even able to play again, it’s not like we are going to get 2011-2016 Kesler back. I agree that he’s going to give it a go because that’s the type of guy he is but I don’t think that the Ducks are factoring him in to their plans after next season. It’s not necessarily a bad thing as the Ducks start transitioning towards their young players. I just hope that he’s able to live a pain-free life going forward.
  11. I’m just counting out Kesler’s hip, not his desire to play. He’s an absolute gamer and if he wasn’t already coming off major hip surgery less than 2 years ago, I’d be more optimistic about him pulling a Jovanovski style comeback. We saw and heard the about the struggle he’s been through with this. I think it’s more about the quality of life for him now, which should be his primary concern. He’s got nothing left to prove. If he somehow came back and was a serviceable player, that would be incredible but I don’t see it happening or being worth the risk. Especially, with the Ducks transitioning towards youth and not likely to be contending until after his contract would be up. It just doesn’t seem probable or worth it all things considered.
  12. https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2019/05/ryan-kesler-undergoes-hip-surgery.html?fv-home=true&post-id=105429 Not surprised. Looks like the end of Kesler.
  13. Yeah. Bottom line is that he’s movable unlike Kesler or Perry. 51 points in 72 games isn’t bad for under $6mil per. LA can free up cap room rather easily if they want.
  14. I’m sure that the league will frown upon that as obvious cap circumvention and wouldn’t allow it to happen.
  15. Yeah, but as stated above there is no way he's retiring and giving up almost $20 mil. LTIR or a buyout would be more likely. LTIR doesn't provide the Ducks with a whole ton of cap relief or flexibility though. The Ducks can potentially LTIR him in the offseason while teams are allow to exceed the salary cap a 10% but need to be cap compliant by start the season from my understanding. Also, if he's on LTIR and the Ducks are operating above the salary cap, then the Ducks can not accrue any future cap savings. No doubt that Kesler has the drive and determination to try and get back, but after reading that SI article, I don't know how much longer his body will allow him to do that while also allowing him to have a good quality of life after hockey. It's just bonkers what he's gone through and is still seeming to go through.
  16. How Carlyle and the organization didn’t force him to sit is borderline criminal let alone give him that workload. I don’t see him finishing his contract at all after reading that. Seems like the 1,000 game mark was a huge motivation and that he was going to get it or die trying. I don’t know how continuing to play can be good for his hip and quality of life after hockey. Hope he isn’t doing irreparable and debilitating damaging to his health.
  17. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.si.com/nhl/2019/03/05/ryan-kesler-journey-1000-games This article about Kesler’s injury, recovery process etc is absolutely insane. How is still playing is a testament to modern medicine and his sheer will. How long can he continue given all of this? We all knew his hip was really bad but my worst case scenario didn’t go this far.
  18. I can't stand Murray but don't mind him doing this. He did ask him if he wished to be moved and have one last chance at a Cup like the Kings did with Kovalchuck. The difference is that Kovalchuck would accept a trade to a contender, but that's not what Miller wants which is his right. I don't mind it because Ryan Miller deserves that kind of respect. Plus, he has a 6-team trade list which he can basically make work like an NMC by submitting a list of teams that do no need goaltending if he wanted to. My issue is that Murray is willing to move someone like Miller and not Silfverberg who has more value in trade and the financial/roster flexibility that would come from moving him.
  19. He’s also 34 and at a point of natural decline. Adding a major hip surgery definitely stacks the odds against him being anything close to to what he was. I’m not optimistic given what we’ve seen so far. I think that his offensive production needs to be focused on simply because how much he gets paid and the Ducks need for scoring. I don’t think he’s been very effective defensively either this season. Other players aren’t putting up up great numbers but their contracts still aren’t nearly as bad a value as Kesler’s.
