I must be, yes.  You're right.

Given that I'm "lucking" hockey knowledge, I think I'm just going to take my leave of this place.  I know that I've contributed plenty to negativity here in the past, so perhaps I'm part of the problem.  But in a season where the team is clearly better, where young players are progressing, and where there are new things to be excited about, the pessimism here is a bummer to me.  I'm not really interested in engaging with it any more.

Hopefully I'll catch everyone sooner rather than later.

It amazes me how short people's memories are. Or maybe everybody expects too much after our win streak.

We won't be confused for the best team in the league and obviously there is so much room to grow but we're way better than last year. And just knowing Carlsson will start already makes me excited. I can,'t wait till McT, Zegras & Drysdale return. We also have Zellweger to look forward too. You'd think that makes people happy after the dark years but apparently not.

So if we're going the age route, I'm Selanne's age. I agree, Perry apologized. If he wants to play in the NHL again, that's between him and a new team with him discussing why he was fired with the new GM.

Are his merits and accomplishments good enough to get him the HHOF? I really don't think they are, same with Getzlaf. Incredible careers but maybe not quite enough. Many great players do not make it.

Stanley Cup Champion, World Champion (served as captain), Olympic Gold winner (twice), Memorial Cup champion, World junior Champion & World Cup of Hockey winner. Only the 2nd player in NHL history to win all of that after Scott Niedermayer.

Winner of the Rocket Trophy & Hart Trophy, not to mention multiple All Star game selections. A few games shy of 1300 and a few points shy of 900.

If Corey Perry doesn´t deserve to be in the HHOF you may as well tear the whole thing down.

  3. There were some here who wanted PV to go after Lafreniere, myself included. Based on his stats he´s finally putting some stuff together. I think they´ll keep him around. Kakko on the other hand has a whopping 3 points in 20 games.

I don´t know a lot about him but if there ever was a chance to gamble on him it´s now.

The Rangers and Kings (and teams like Boston) bring a guarantee that they will try to spend their way out of a rebuild quickly in free agency, so there is more incentive for players to go there even when the team is bad because they know the team won't be bad for very long. If you come to Anaheim, you know the team is going to be building more slowly, so there's less incentive.

Also, Bob Murray did give us McTavish, Zegras, Drysdale, and Zellweger. You have to give him credit for at least picking some darn good players for our rebuild, even if he just stumbled into those picks through his own incompetence in building a team.

He did make those picks and for that I´m thankful. But we got to pick so high because we were bad.

And maybe Maggie the Monkey would have made the same picks.

When was the last time anyone took 6 - 10 years to complete a rebuild? Kings and Rangers both did it in 3 years.

It pains me to say this but the rangers and kings are for some reasons a more desirable franchise to play for. Especially the rangers. We don´t have that. Boston has, detroit, Toronto.

So while I agree the playoff drought is too long the rebuild only started when PV took over. BM did nothing. And sadly we don´t have the advantage of being a big name franchise who can lure players in by winking at them. So we have to build through the draft and overpay for free agents. It sucks.

I have no idea what this might be, but if it's drug related, I would expect the player assistance program to be involved.  It could still be drugs and Perry is refusing to go through the program, but that's just one of infinite possibilities.  The way everyone is treating this, I expect it's something worse.

My guess based on the ´credible' reporting is something like a racial or gay slur. Nothing violent because I don´t think the police is/was involved so he must have said something that is bad enough to have his contract terminated. Can´t think of anything other than that.

I don´t think Bedard´s mom or Chelios´ daughter have anything to do with this. That would be beyond ridiculous.

I´m curious though. I hope Perry´s not the victim of chicago trying to make good on their past wrongdoings by making this bigger than it is so they look like the good guys.

On the other hand if he crossed the line he should be punished for sure.

Lindholm is a center though so where are you putting him if McTavish and Carlsson are the long term answer at 1C and 2C? He’s a UFA after this year so the Ducks would be in a bidding war for him also. Team needs a thoroughbred winger much more imo

Talking about wingers, I don´t know how Toronto can afford Nylander if he keeps this up.

Question is: can we? I think yes but don´t know whether we should. He´ll command a lot of money and then some more.

I´m not a fan of big contracts. I am however a fan of the thought of having Zegras, Terry, McT, Carlsson & Nylander in our top 6.

I have to admit, Gibson is playing better the last 3-4 games, let's see how long he'll stay healthy, without injuring his glass organs. A 20+ games streak without getting injured and something above .910% SV would be great for this team. I can't believe I even have to say it, since he's one of the highest paid goaltenders in the league.

There are 11 active goalies who have played more games than Gibson (although Price hardly counts as still active).
Andersen, Jones & Talbot all made their debut in the same year as Gibson, who played 3 games that season.
Though he has been injured quite a few times he hardly misses significant time (knock on wood). Otherwise he wouldn't be so close to them.
BTW Hellebuyck is 30 as is Gibson. Younger than all the others.

    MAF - 993 GP - debut 03-04
    Quick - 759 GP - debut 07-08
    Price - 712 GP - debut 07-08
    Bob - 654 GP - debut 10-11
    Varlamov - 588 GP - debut 08-09
    Freddie - 458 GP - debut 13-14
    Reimer - 481 GP - debut 10-11
    Hellebuyck - 456 GP - debut 15-16
    Markstrom - 446 GP - debut 10-11
    Jones - 444 GP - debut 13-14
    Talbot - 443 GP - debut 13-14
    John Gibson - 439 GP - debut 13-14

  9. They´re not trading him unless he asks for it. The longer this goes on it doesn´t seem that unlikely. However, I wouldn´t do it.

I don´t want to give up McT, Carlsson or Mintyukov and the oilers would be idiots not to ask for 2 out of those 3. If the oilers were indeed idiots and they would bite on Zegras, Zellweger, Dostal and one or two 1sts I´d do it.

4 point night for Bedard in Tampa - 2 ES goals, 1 ES primary assist, and 1 primary assist on the PP. Mintyukov’s Calder lead just took a hit lol.

But how does he do on D? :D

How about those oilers? I´m a Gibson fan so I don´t want to trade him but if there ever was a time... So far skinner has disappointed. So has campbell (understatement). Still early in the season but 2 points now are just as valuable as later on in the season.

Considering the occasional talk on the board about how great/terrible Cam Fowler and his current defense partner is, I pose the following question:

Since 2010-11, who do you think was his best defensive partner?  Or his worst?

I'll start...  I was impressed with the short-lived partnership between Fowler and Gudbranson.

If I recall correctly (it's been a while) although it was for a short while he formed a good pairing with Simon Despres.

  12. After tonight Gibson SV% .921 and GAA 2.41.

He's 13th and 14th (out of 53) in the league among goalies who have played 4 or more games. Better than Shesterkin, Saaros, Sorokin, Kuemper, Markstrom, Andersen,...

I'm not too worried about our goalie situation. Meanwhile in edmonton ...

They got fined $2 million dollars and didn't lose any draft picks, which was a f*****g embarrassment. The league should have fined them far much more money and stripped them of multiple first round picks. The Sens are getting hit harder over their screw up in botched Dadanov trade to us. The Coyotes lost a first round pick over scouting combine violations. Instead, Chicago gets a generational player and one of the brightest futures in the NHL.

So much this. The way the league 'punished' them is a damn joke.

That's the problem.  $6.4 mil per season doesn't fit backup role. He'll have to start, it's politics. My biggest fears are:

    1) Ducks will lose Dostal after next season when his contract will expire.

    2) Assuming Ducks will make playoffs next season, the starting goaltender will be Gibson.

PV has done a great job over the summer. Especially the Dostal contract which is a steal. I don´t see why he wouldn´t be able to re-sign Dostal when the time comes.

If the team keeps up this level of play Gibson´s numbers will improve compared to the past seasons. Should a trade be on the table and we retain I´m sure we can find a suitor. Question is will we be in a Playoffs race or not. If we´re in it no way we trade him. If we´re out of it, are the oilers for example in it? Or the devils? They score a lot but they also concede a lot of goals. Those might be teams who could use Gibson.

Well, Dostal is rookie of the month. He’s won every game but 1 that he has played in, including tonight’s now. He made several grade A clutch saves and he hasn’t let adversity get into his head at all. Gibson has never played this well, with this consistency in his Ducks career. Believe me, I wanted to be his #1 fan, but that has to be earned. I won’t just award him loyalty just because our announcers are paid to sing his praises. Other teams announcers don’t speak so glowingly about him. Dostal is only human also, but he’s a better goalie. His technique is solid. Square to the puck, moves great side to side, keeps his 5 hole covered and elbows in tight. Admittedly, it helps that his team is playing very well in front of him but as I’ve said, they trust him. I’ve been unhappy with Gibson for at least the last 5 seasons. At the very least they should keep whichever goalie is winning in net until he loses (back-to-backs excepted).

It´s been a while I´ll give you that but Gibson has shown on multiple occasions that he´s a damn fine goalie. And then came the Eakins years. Maybe Eakins broke Gibson. Time will tell. Somebody once posted the numbers of how many shots Gibson faced last season. It was a hell of a lot more than the 2nd guy on the list. And if you know how we played under Eakins it weren´t perimeter shots.

    https://pucksofafeather.com/2021/01/29/anaheim-ducks-john-gibson-deserves-better/

This is actually from when Eakins was already our coach.

Look you don´t have to like the guy. Dostal has been playing well and better. But you can´t look past Gibsons past achievements and say he has never played as well as Dostal. That´s a load of crap and you know it.

And maybe the team plays a tighter D game when Dostal is in net because he´s still a rookie and they feel they should help out more.

Not at all Ducks 08 - I started out thinking Gibson would be great. He disabused me of my belief in him by quickly proving he’s just not an NHL #1 caliber goalie. I’ve no delusions about my game play. He’s better than me in any position on the ice. But I’m not trying to be on the ice. I pay to watch hockey and I have no expectation that anyone would want to watch me play, even for free. Gibson started out spending so much time swimming in goal that I used to think he was playing water polo. Eakins (or someone) finally got him to change that for the most part, but he just doesn’t have what is needed to play a solid 60 min. in goal. He is out of position often, slow to get back, slow side-to-side and while he makes spectacular saves in almost every game, including one in last night’s game, he lets far too many simple shots through. He doesn’t get square to the puck, doesn’t get his paddle down to protect the 5 hole and often cannot get his elbows in tight. He also leaves gaps at both posts. I hope but don’t expect a goalie to stop all of the great shots, but I do expect him to stop the ones that shouldn’t have a chance. And once Gibson let’s in one goal it is rare that at least 2 more don’t get by him in short order. As for Eakins, his only fault where Gibson was concerned was a reluctance to pull him before the game was out of reach. I stopped buying tickets to Ducks games and stopped spending money in their store 3 years ago and will not resume until they get rid of him or he starts playing much better.

While I don´t fully agree this is a well thought out post. Thanks for that. I do agree that Gibson needs to be better. While it´s still early in the season it looks like we finally have a defense with capable NHL D men. Overall the team is also playing better.

We can´t judge Gibson on his play during the Eakins years. He may have given up at times but he´s only human and we was easily the biggest victim of Eakins´ incompetence. Now he no longer has the excuse that he doesn´t have a team in front of him. At least for now. Here´s to hoping it doesn´t fall apart.

Dostal so far has looked good but I think it´s too early to give him the starting job. We don´t know how he´ll handle a bigger work load. Time will tell. For now I´m glad we have two capable NHL goalies.

Dostal proves my point again tonight I Pittsburg. As did Gibson, actually. And you clowns can call this nonsense but all but one of our losses belong to Gibson and all but one of our wins belongs to Dostal. Gibson actually sucks. And as someone who has played goaltender I know from experience that when your team trusts you they play noticeably better.

We are all a product of our environment. While Gibson could have been better any goalie would have struggled in Anaheim the past few years.

Again tonight proved nothing and you´re still posting nonsense. I can only assume Gibson beat you out in some hockey camp 25 years ago or he once took a piddle in your cornflakes and you´re still salty over it.

Anyway, there are enough Gibson haters on this board so you´ll get along just great.

When I posted this the game was still 30 min. away and I didn’t know who would be in goal, but based on history believed it would be Gibson. Even so, today’s game proved my point. Dostal did get scored on but the team played with a ton of confidence. 4 goals against Gibson is almost always a loss. The key is having a goal tender the team believes in. When they believe they defend well and they score well because they can take chances.

I expect to read nonsense on a message board from time to time but this is a whole new level of it.

So you say that if Gibson gets scored on 4 times we lose and if it happens with Dostal we win. And you´re point was proven yesterday.

Season opener last season. Point disproven.

So why aren't we doing this with the other rookies? Why didn't Verbeek do it with McT? Because he's his #2 OA? McT played a ton before, was 3rd OA and didn't get this "hit the wall" treatment. Seems to me Verbeek is just being extra cautious with Carlsson. That's fine whatever. There's nothing wrong with being cautious. But it seems rather weird to do this with one rookie when others aren't if the main reason is they get burned out.

Not everyone is built the same way. Some guys can take a beating night in night out, others get injured just looking at them. Not saying Carlsson is either one of them but he has played a lot and was dealing with some sort of injury.

And maybe last year PV would't have had a problem with McT being burned because we were in the Bedard/Carlsson/Fantilli/Michkov sweepstakes.

Carlsson wont be anywhere near Calder consideration this year if he sits out this much. And by January he will become a work hirse for the Gulls.

Honetly the way it is going, Mintyukov will be the Ducks player with Calder consideration.

Stop beating the dead (work) horse in San Diego thing. It's unhealthy. Maybe you should see somebody about that.

PV didn't wake up one day thinking: how can I screw over our loyal fans? Oh that's right, I'm gonna scratch Carlsson every other game. I'm sure a lot of thought went into that decision that was probably taken in consultation with the staff that works day in day out with Carlsson. It's not fun for the fans but then again a lot of us thought he was going to play in San Diego or even Sweden anyway.

And what's wrong with Mintyukov being considered for the Calder? You almost make it look like a bad thing. BTW the Calder isn't the Masterton. While unlikely, we can have 2 nominees.
