i agree.  it's clear there are cliques in the GM ranks, and there are tons of informal chats.

now, would a relatively veteran GM cold-call a newish GM and critique that new GM's RFA offers?  hell no.

that said, if a newish GM reached out for advice, then an older GM-confidant would absolutely take the call... if the older GM could within the bounds of his duty of loyalty to his team and league rules.

Beek has left this situation go on for so long, there's quite a few GMs he could reach out to for advice without worrying (too much) about their more selfish motives.

it's times like these when i wish the kess and juice podcast was still a thing.

If PV needs advice from other GM´s in this case he should just quit. Terry is perhaps our best player. He´s been a 60-65 points player the past two seasons on the worst team in the league while being defensively responsible. On a good team he might be a 75-80 points player. Nobody has to tell him that.

We have loads of cap space and not many talented young wingers. A guy like Terry is a godsend for this franchise. If you´re prepared to overpay for aging vets (which PV rightfully has done) he should be willing to overpay (a little) or hand out a longer term for our best young winger. If PV doesn´t realise that he´s a numbnuts.

I really don´t get this unless Terry has let it known to PV that he doesn´t want to sign long term.

What's worse it this also affects our image with UFAs. What high profile players would want to come here seeing things like this? I understand trying to find a middle ground with the arbitrator but this just hurts our organizational image more than helps us get the ruling in our favor. Honestly this looks like Terry isn't going to be a Duck for long. I'm getting worried what Zegras is being offered.

Very much this. We already have problems attracting UFA´s and now this. Not to mention the blatant disrespect towards Terry.

  3. Well I have to take back the nice things I´ve said about PV. This is a disgrace.

Question, are the numbers that are being reported the actual offer the team made him or is it solely for the arbitration hearing?

So now we´re seeing an offer of 4.5 mil but could it be that the team has made him a 5 years at 6 mil AAV offer and that the Terry camp was looking for let´s say 6 x 8 AAV?

And because they couldn´t agree they now have to make an offer for 1- 2 years.

5 x 6 AAV is still not enough for Terry but it´s not such a big disgrace.

Terry elected to go to arbitration so the team gets to decide whether it’ll be a 1- or 2-year deal. Terry does not get to choose. Terry also is two years away from UFA status, so if the team chooses 1 year, he’s not going to be a UFA when the contract ends. He’ll be in the same position next summer that DeBrincat was last summer when he was traded to Ottawa. One year away from UFA, arbitration eligible, and holding ALL of the leverage.

Elliotte Friedman has been reporting the arbitration filings roughly 48 hours prior to the scheduled hearings, so if he does that for Terry too then we should know the numbers that Verbeek and Terry have submitted for arbitration by Monday afternoon (if there’s no settlement before then).

I also think it’s pretty optimistic of you to think that this is all just for show. It’s not. This isn’t the kind of show anybody wants, and it actually makes Verbeek look pretty bad that he can’t re-sign the team’s best player, even with $27M in cap space to play with. I’m still hoping for a deal before Wednesday, but I don’t see any reason to be optimistic at this point that they’ll settle before the hearing.

I'm also becoming antsy. I've been supportive of PV so far but this thing should never go to arbitration. You should re-sign your best player not at all cost but especially in our situation you do go the extra mile. Unless Terry's ask is absurd this makes PV look really bad. That is if Terry wants to stay of course.

I don't think Tarasenko takes that deal, especially from the Ducks. If he has good year in Ottawa then he stands to make more than that next summer. He took a "betting on myself" deal which Ottawa is in much better shape to help him increase his value than we are.

I agree. You´d think with a rising cap and all the space that we have we´d be in a prime position to sign anyone we want but it seems like the rising cap is working against us.

All those guys who want to bet on themselves to make more money next year aren´t gonna come here because they think they can put up better numbers elsewhere.

And maybe the guys we have to sign (Zegras, Terry, Drysdale) also want a chunk of that extra money that comes available. I thought PV was going to have it easy with those contract negotiations but I don´t think that´s the case.

I can totally see Zegras being cocky enough to say give me a bridge and I´m gonna get 2 mil more in 2 years than what you´re offering right now. I can see why PV would be reluctant to do so. Players should earn their contract and not ask more just because the cap rises.

I wouldn´t mind bridging Zegras but I really hope Terry gets locked long term although those chances are fading by the day every day his hearing comes closer. It really shouldn´t come to that. That would be a real knock on PV unless Terry´s ask is so outrageous. Whatever happens I hope it happens quickly so we get an idea where we´re at capwise and that PV can pencil in more moves.

Ducks missed playoffs for 5 years in a row, last season they where dead last. What positive thing do you want me to comment, say that everything is wonderful and terrific? It is what it is, and I am not shy to talk about it, because I care about this team.

By the way, this is the FORTH time you comment my posts with "Rable, Rable, Rable". I know there are different people here with different opinions, I won't be surprised if some of the members may have some autistic disorders of different spectrum, it's life. But, assuming that you are an average person with the average IQ, what you doing is very unusual.

We have been bad the past few years. Everybody on this board will acknowledge that.

But we do have things to be excited about. We don´t know what we have in Cronin but Eakins is finally gone. There´s a few other faces in the staff as well. We´re finally going to see some of the kids play (for a longer period) on the big team: LaCombe, Helleson, Groulx, maybe Zellweger or Mintyukov.

While I - and I guess everybody else - hope(s) we´ll add some more players we´ve signed two welcome additions in Killorn and Gudas. We didn´t get him but we at least know PV was interested in Debrincat. It´s obvious he didn´t want to be here so it wasn´t going to happen but I´m glad to know our GM is trying something.

We still have a long way to go but unless Cronin is Eakins 2.0 we are already a better team than last season. On a personal note - and you won´t like it - I´m glad Gibson is still here and I hope he stays. I´m a fan and we have nobody to step in as far as I know. Give him a chance behind a hopefully better team.

It´s a lot of hoping but I´m more positive about this team than I have been in a while. And I think you can be too if you look past the Gibson issue. I can understand you don´t like the guy for whatever reason but Gibson was never the cause of the abysmal state of our team.

  7. I hate this time of the year. The draft has been  held. Free agency frenzy has passed. There are no arbitration hearings (which isn´t all that exciting unless it´s someone from your own team) and it´s the same rumors every day. This year it´s Karlsson to pittsburgh and where is hellebuyck gonna end up?

Has anybody read or heard anything regarding us? I know PV said there was more to come and the summer is still long but he still has a lot on his plate to complete before october, preferably september because I want a full roster before training camp starts.

Man how did SO many scouts and analysts be SO WRONG about Yakupov??? like....i know Stefan is like the most notorious #1 OA bust...but this ended up being pretty bad

It´s still a lottery. While not drafted 1st overall Griffin Reinhart was a bust. Also an Islander, Michael Dal Colle. Maybe he can still find a spot somewhere but it´s not looking good for Puljujarvi. And how about our own 5th overall pick Stanislav Chistov?

Sometimes for whatever reason it doesn´t work out. I remember back in the day when we drafted Emerson Etem I looked at his numbers in the WHL and I was excited as hell. Also on his team back then were Linden Vey and Hunter Shinkaruk ripping it up. In the NHL not so much.

I disagree with your premise because I think Cody Ceci IS a bad player, but at $3.25 million, he won't kill you.  I would take an asset to get him from the Oilers.  But I don't think they'll do that.  He works for them.

I´m just comparing to what our standard has been over the last several years. While Ceci isn´t the best D man out there he´d be an upgrade over a lot of guys we´ve seen on our blue line lately.

The money isn´t crazy and the term is perfect. In 2 years one of the kids will probably be ready to step in fulltime.

  10. I´m in the sign Dumba camp but it´s pretty lilely he doesn´t end up in Anaheim.

If he doesn´t would Cody Ceci be a welcome addition? He´s had a rough playoffs but he´s not a bad player. He´s big and he´s a righty. The oilers still have to fill out their roster because they only have 20 guys signed. They´re a little under 6 mil below the cap and have Bouchard to re-sign.

Ceci has 2 years remaining at 3.25 mil.

If you get wind that the Rangers are offering him $2.1 mil for 2 years, you 1000% offer sheet him at $4.29 mil for 4 years.

I don´t think there´s another option. They have a little over 2 mil in cap space at the moment. Unless they trade somebody who makes a considerable amount they can´t offer him a lot.

Even moving Goodrow out won´t tip the balance by a lot because they´d have to take some salary back. So that would leave them with say 5 mil and a rosterspot still open.

If any team wants to screw the rangers now is the time.

  12. The rangers can go the Kakko route with Laf. 2 years at 2.1 AAV. That leaves them with about 6 dollars in cap space.

Goodrow is the one they probably want to move. Or Panarin and his 11 mil who was basically a no show in the Playoffs.

Wouldn´t that be something? Then they can sign Tarasenko and Kane. Aren´t we looking for a LW? 😄

I don’t understand all the Drysdale trade talk here. The only RD the Ducks have that has his ceiling is Luneau. The only other RD the Ducks have with any real NHL experience is Gudas. That’s not trading from a position of strength, but ok let’s continue. So the idea is to trade a 21 year old RD with good upside, and then sign a 29 year old RD that hasn’t been all that great in recent seasons playing on a good team as his replacement? I’m sorry, what? I’m not saying we don’t need a good, young scoring winger. However, if you look at our current roster we’ve got Zegras, Terry, McTavish, Killorn, Henrique, Vatrano, and Strome as forwards with the ability to put up some goals/points. That’s not counting Carlsson either. If I’m looking at the two groups - these forwards, and the RD’s the Ducks have - I think it’s pretty obvious the Ducks shouldn’t be subtracting from their RD’s in pursuit of a winger.

I don't think anybody wants to trade Drysdale but in the very unlikely scenario where arizona would trade Keller to a divisional rival we'd have to give up something of value. Unless a package of picks gets it done, Drysdale becomes a very likely candidate.
While not necessarily the same type of D man Helleson, Luneau & Warren are all righties. Unless they are all busts I think we can overcome losing Drysdale. Not to mention, while lefties, we still have Zellweger and Mintyukov.

Having said that, I don't want to trade him right away. I'm very curious to see what he can after last year and playing for a hopefully decent coach. But should the opportunity present itself to use him in a package for a really good winger like Keller or Nylander I think I'd pull the trigger.

  14. Arizona should really have to think hard over a package containing Drysdale. And what´s the condition on the proposed 1st? I´d move our 24 1st without a condition for Keller. Especially if we could add Dumba. This team with Keller and Dumba isn´t going to end in the bottom 5 unless Cronin is the 2nd coming of Dallas Eakins.

But I don´t think arizona bites on pastujov or perreault and I don´t want to give up Gaucher. If Drysdale + 2024 1st (unprotected) + 2024/2025 2nd gets it done I´m all for it.   I´d throw in Lundestrom too if needed but again I don´t know if that would be enticing enough for arizona.

  15. We don´t have to be a contender next season but we have to take steps in becoming better. Adding Gudas was a good move in that regard. I´m not too familiar with Hagg but from reading he seems to be more of a 7th D man. Something we have had plenty of these last few years.

Icing a defense of Fowler, Gudas, Drysdale, Hagg and 2 of the aforementioned kids doesn´t strike me as a good defense. Drysdale is basically still a kid who just missed an entire year.

IMO adding Dumba would be beneficial for several reasons. He´s an experienced D man who can play tough minutes. He´s no pushover. If the goal is to keep Gibson I think he´d welcome that move.

We could pair a kid (counting Drysdale here) with Fowler, Gudas and Dumba. That leaves two spots for Helleson, LaCombe, Zellweger and Mintyukov. And there´s no way all of our D are gonna play 82 games.

If any of the kids kicks down the NHL doors, that´s a good problem to have.

  16. I´m disappointed he didn't end up with us but it was a longshot. It was clear from the beginning that detroit was ahead of the competition. If the player doesn´t want to be here you can hardly call it a missed opportunity.

Possible silver lining: his contract is very reasonable. That might help us in the Terry & Zegras negotiations. Imagine if he had gotten 8.5 mil from someone.

Anyway PV, what´s next? I´m still hoping for Dumba and I´d love to get my hands on Nylander  although I definitely don´t see that one happen.

Nylander will probably command more than AD. Both in a trade and salary. He has 1 year left and there is no guarantee he resigns. He can negotiate a new deal with the leafs and then be traded too. Nylander is one year older, much bigger and has better numbers than AD. His numbers actually get better with time too.
Leafs have cap issues and it would be tough to move correct players around. We have a goalie (if he wants to go to a contenteder in Canada), they need a better one, the conversation should start there.

He should command more. He´s better than Debrincat. As for trade value, the leafs don´t have to be too picky because he walks after this season.
