Oof, I’ve I was an NHL player and Stamkos took $4 mil Per year instead of $10 mil.   I’d complain to the the players union to get that contract voided.   (Don’t know if that’s even possible).  I understand taking $6 mil instead of $8 mil for a hometown discount, which is 25% less than market value.   But to take 60% less than market value is insane and the players union should fight against that.

Why would they fight against that? A player can sign for whatever they want. Paul Kariya went from a $10mil per year contract with the Ducks and refused to take a pay cut to $8mil so they could sign Selanne and then signed with Colorado for $1mil. The union didn't fight that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with signing for less and I'm sorry, if you were a superstar at 26 years old, signed an 8 year contract worth $8mil a year and had to renew at 35 years old, I would not be expecting to make more money as you are now at the end of your career. Usually by that time a player is getting slower and the stats are starting to fall off. In this case it hasn't happened yet, but a player can sign for whatever they want. If Stamkos loves it in Tampa and decides he will sign for league minimum he can. Mark Giordano went from making $6.75 mil per season to resigning in Toronto for $800,000 so the team could have money to spend elsewhere. Union didn't fight that and that was an 88% decrease.

    Cutter / Leo / Top 6 RHW

    Killorm / Zegras / Terry

    Vats / McT / Strome

    ? / ? / Colangelo

Ross Johnston is hopefully playing 4th line minutes protecting Sidorov in the AHL.

I’d argue add Marsh to that top line and we’d have 3 LEGIT NHL scoring lines.

Edit : plus by adding Marsh we hurt Vegas.  Remember to make the playoffs we only have to be better than 4 teams out of 7.

Edmonton  (much better than us)/ Vegas (cap hell amazing team) / Vancouver (can you say NJ Devils ?) / Kings (window closing, that drew  Doughty is as old as Stamkos !) / Calgary (incoming roster tear down) / Seattle (not as good as they think they are) / SJ (do you know the way to TANK)

I see one scoring line, a couple incomplete lines, and one with a center who is not going to be happy with third line minutes. That's a long ways from 3 scoring lines and a 4th that can score. ? must be a really good player if they can play 2 spots on one line and can score. Marsh is not coming here either. Somebody will easily outbid the Ducks on him and he is also looking to win now. Johnston will not be in the AHL. He is Cronin's best friend and will be giving 82 games in the NHL. He may even be that top 6 winger. There is no guarantee at all that Verbeek will be successful in bringing in a top 6 winger, none. And the only way I see it getting done is in the trade route with Zegras or McTavish going the other way. This team has too many top centers and one of them is not going to be happy playing the third line. If they add Celebrini then that's another one. That is where I've been saying all along that the Ducks have the strength of centers and top 2 centers that they can make a trade using one for that top 6 RW. They could even use one to make a trade for a top 6 winger and top 4 rhd in the same deal. Strome could easily slide over to that 3rd line center or even Nathan Gaucher, and say Sidorov has a good camp and gets that 3rd line left or right wing. Or better yet, get Celebrini, move McTavish up and drop Killorn to that 3rd line on the wing.

    Celebrini/Carlsson/Cutter

    Zegras/McTavish/Terry

    Killorn/Strome/Vatrano

    ? / Lundestrom/Colangelo

That's a better looking forward group (if the Ducks win the lottery) then hoping one of the top UFA's pick the Ducks over any other competitive team. I think what the Ducks do in FA and trades will depend alot on what happens with the lottery.

    Yeah, 100%.

I don't think right now they would have any problems in deciding who to keep between Hedman and Stamkos, if that was a decision they had to make.

But I can easily see Stamkos taking a significant pay cut to remain in Tampa as that is where his family has set up their roots. If they don't want to leave, they won't. The guy has made over 100mil in career earnings, makes additional money on endorsements every year, etc. He doesnt need to go sign somewhere else for $10mil per season if he is happy with his life where it is now. And if his intentions are to win with Tampa, taking that $4mil per season so the team has money to spend elsewhere would be a smart decision.

Hedman is a machine, but I don't think a guy who will be 34 in December and in his 16th season can be considered in his "prime".

Fair. Prime these days is 23 years old anyways. However, Hedman is still the cornerstone of the Lightning defense. Kucherov is the cornerstone of the offense now. Stamkos back in the day but it's Kucherov now. And again, the Lightning might be going the wait and see approach has bit them with Stamkos so lets get Hedman done now before he puts up a Norris trophy next year.

Yes all in moves are grabbing Hertl and the trade deadline and keeping Stone on LTIR until playoffs and being WAY over the cap, and selling 4 out of 5 of your first round picks for TDL moves.    We are currently at the have 3 NHL caliber scoring lines, and a 4th line that can score when needed and play a little middle 6 minutes injuries come through the season.   Looking at like Colangelo for that.

Who are these 3 scoring lines and a 4th that can score? Ross Johnston can score? Could have fooled me. He is the worst regular player in the entire NHL. Lundestrome-Strome-Jones as a third line that can score. Highly doubt it. We have a top 6 and the bottom 6 is awful, as Verbeek says. He says he wants a top 6 rw, top 4 rhd and to fix the bottom 6. He wont get the first two and he will tinker with the last option, that's my guess for the off season.

Ike I appreciate the info!   Full disclosure, I was aware of this and i posted what I said because I was feeling cheeky and wanted to poke the bear of my buddy sask!

See he kept mentioning Stamkos wasn’t frustrated with the GM or the Organization as a whole, but the “process”.   And now Hedman is getting the exact opposite treatment than what Stamkos got.
Whether that’s a good captain fighting for his good buddy by being so vocal the year prior ?   Whether there was some actual animosity between the 2 sides that has now subsided, or whether the organization was like wait we can’t not get these two back for another run for 3-4 years our fan base will kill us !    I don’t know truly know.

Or maybe, the organization was playing the wait and see approach with Stamkos. Wait until the end of the year in case he completely dries up (as this is what happens with some 34 year old players) and not bring him back, see if he produces somewhat and we can get him at a cheaper option, or see if he still has it and then hope he takes a discount and stays. Where as Hedman is still in his prime and a corner stone of their defense and they want to get him done ASAP. Maybe because they wait and see approach bit them with Stamkos so they aren't playing that game anymore. Only they know.

  7. Honestly out of that top 5, those are all aging veterans aside from Reinhart who we have very little chance of getting. The other 4 I don't want to see here. We are enough aging veterans who don't pull their weight. We don't need more. And if we go after any of them will all depend on what happens with the draft. If somehow the Ducks get 1st overall, then signing another top 6 for over 6.5 mil to play in the bottom 6 isn't required.

  8. 45 minutes ago, PlzInsertLiquor said:

At this point we are arguing semantics ….. Zegras was frustrated never said so outright, but yes you can read between the lines to know he was frustrated.   The GM of Tampa is the mouthpiece for the organization, so he chose not to give Stamkos a contract before the season started, and may have priced himself out if Stamkos doesn’t take a big pay cut (which would be a negative thing from the Players Union perspective because it lowers the value of every 40 goal scorer from here on it, although I completely understand it from Stamkos’ POV).

It’s more of a you ripped Verbeek on every contract Terry, Zegras, Drysdale - and yet something very similar happens with Stamkos and you are like no way he would leave.   Also I agree Stamkos most likely stays, but he’s a captain, no way he wouldn’t say all the right things even if he wanted out.

Here is Stamkos' full "I'm frustrated" comment:

"To be honest, I've been disappointed in the lack of talk in that regard. It was something that I expressed at the end of last year -- that I wanted to get something done before training camp started. There haven't been any conversations," Stamkos said Wednesday. "I'm ready whenever. I guess that was something that I didn't see coming. But it is what it is."

Notice the last sentence, "it is what it is". Doesnt sound overly frustrated. Disappointed he didnt get a new contract before camp, but basically saying, whatever I'll get one after the season.

Okay, “sounded” A bit frustrated (being said by the dude writing the article)

    vs

    “It’s frustrating” said Stamkos

    are 2 vastly different things.

I won't return to Anaheim until I get a new contract though is a pretty harsh thing to see when you are frustrated.

And you are saying Stamkos was frustrated with Tampa. So you're taking his quote out of context. He was saying it is frustrating that they couldn't start talking contract. Doesn't mean he is frustrated at the organization or their process. He found it frustrating that he had to wait, then put up the numbers he did. At the end of the day that favors him and now he is saying all the right things for someone that wants to stay where he is. Who cares what he said 7 months ago. If he said that he is frustrated with the organization tomorrow fine. But he is saying he is happy where he is, with who he plays for, the city he lives in, etc, etc, etc. He does not sound today like someone who wants to pack up and leave.

  10. 3 minutes ago, PlzInsertLiquor said:

Please show me where he said that.   My quote was legit articles that mentioned Stamkos said and Killorn said.   You offer zero proof that Zegras said anything, and if you find something it will Be some “inside information says Zegras says”.  Which is the opposite of truth.

As of the middle of August, Zegras sounded a bit frustrated"I feel like it's all kind of up in the air. Obviously, I'd love to get back to play as my teammates get back but that's kind of out of my control at the moment."

He even said he "won't return to Anaheim until he has a new contract," according to NHL.com reporter Dan Rosen.

  11. As stated in the other thread, this is basically the whole Ryan Getzlaf situation again when his 8 year contract expired. Getzlaf became a UFA, turned down significantly more money and the opportunity to win another cup because his family was rooted in Anaheim and he had no intentions to move them at that time. Family comes first before the money, especially for these big name players that already have made tons of money.

  12. 7 minutes ago, PlzInsertLiquor said:

I think we all agree he’d most likely go back to Tampa.   but that being said, Stamkos came out and said he was frustrated with the way his contract has been handled.   Killorn mentioned sometimes not feeling wanted makes you not want to be somewhere, and said he’d recruit Stamkos if he didn’t go back to Tampa.   GMPV’s son posted three ducks emojis on twitter under an article contemplating where Stamkos may go.

He just makes too much sense for our team and if available we should make a run at him.
Top 6 RHW, PP monster, Captain of multiple Stanley cup winning teams, cap hit won’t negatively effect our future core’s cap needs, doesn’t play a style of hockey that screams he will wear down with age.    Honestly it makes too much sense from our standpoint.

Trevor Zegras said in the summer he was getting frustrated with how contract negotiations went, but yet he is still a Duck and never requested a trade to leave.

Beeker did mention he wanted the Ducks to get Top 6 RW and T 4 RHD....So I expect and have feeling he may be active on trade and signing front.

He said he wanted those and he wanted to improve his bottom 6, but just because he said that doesn't mean he is going to get it. I can see him "improving" the bottom 6, but to get a top 6 RW or RHD in FA, the player needs to decide they want to come here. I don't see many that will, as mentioned, our owners are being cheap right now so I see the Ducks being outbid on every top FA. And then the trade front, well you have to give up top assets in order to bring in top players. I cant see Verbeek willing to part with what others want. If he succeeds in bringing in a top 6 rw and top 4 rhd, great, but I feel it is all smoke when he talks and it won't happen.

Signing Reinhard wouldn’t be just an extra 2 million. You would be signing Reinhard for like 4 more years and 2-4 more million dollars per year. Reinharr worries me, this production came out of nowhere, conveniently in a contract year.

Reinhart isnt worth $10-12mil per season though and if some team was dumb enough to give him that long term after one year thrn he becomes an early buy out candidate in a year or two. I'm just sayin if Reinhart takes 8-9 mil, I'd rather have the Ducks sign him then Stamkos. And you have to believe with McTavish, Carlsson, and Zegras they will all not be centers. They will all want high minutes. If somehow the Ducks win the lottery and add another center then all those guys wont be here long term.

  15. 1 hour ago, perry_mvp said:

You think Florida would sign Stamkos over Reinhart who is 6 years younger? That would be crazy. If Stamkos wants to stay in Tampa, he's taking a cheap contract.

Which is why when everyone is saying the Ducks should sign Stamkos for 8mil per, I'm saying the Ducks should take that and the extra two mil and sign Reinhart instead. Age fits our rebuild. Florida can sign Stamkos as their backup when they lose Reinhart.

  16. You know where I could see Stamkos signing if he doesn't go back to Tampa. Florida. Contending team, still in Florida, doesn't have to uproot the family, etc. And just over $20mil in cap space going into next season. Even needing to resign players the Panthers have the room to get this done and if staying in Florida and winning championships is a top priority, this would be his best option. The Panthers could easily offer him $9mil per season and still be fine.

  17. https://www.tampabay.com/sports/lightning/2024/04/30/money-legacy-stanley-cup-what-is-it-that-steven-stamkos-wants-most/?utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_content=%40TBTimes_Sports&utm_medium=social

This article sums up the Stamkos situation. Saying that a team like Chicago or Anaheim will offer him the big pay day, but he isn't the type of player that will take it without there being any hope of playoff success. There is a very small chance he signs here, but if it is a 3 year contract as we are all talking as we need money for the young guys in 3 years, the Ducks won't be making the playoffs at all during that time, so that drops the odds for Stamkos even lower.
