Wait...are you saying that if Gibson gives up 4 goals and loses, and Dostal gives up 4 goals and wins, there's something about Gibson that made the team play worse offense?

4 goals scored on ANY goalie is almost always a loss.  Dostal was fortunate that the team played some offense in front of him (or that the other goalie was far, far worse).

eventually we'll see a post where we blame gibson for an empty net goal.

  2. With Carlsson in tomorrow, plus Zegras benching in Columbus, I can see a strong bounce back game for the top line. I know it's Boston, but I'm predicting a goal or 2 by the first line. Z with 1g 1a with the goal on the PP. His celebration will be a long angry stare into Cronin's soul.

Two thirds of the team would be sitting on the pine because of "boneheaded stuff".

Take a stupid penalty, you keep on playing. Keep on taking stupid penalties, you keep on playing. Make a bad decision with the puck then hey, Zegras gets benched even if Zegras wasn't the culprit. In this case he was but I saw plenty of players turning the puck over continuously without the same treatment.

I didnt see it that way. Even if the other players were turning pucks over, they played hard on the pucks and were aggressive on 50/50 and board battles. Zegras was just soft the first 40 min. It was very noticeable how non-committed he was to the game compared to the rest. I understand your point about dumb penalties and turnovers here and there, but if you're not committed to the same team culture instilled by the headcoach then you're going to get punished. In terms of commitment to defense, winning board battles, making the smart decisions with the puck Zegras was miles from where the overall team was. I was very frsutrated with his play even after the first 20.

Forums are places where we, the fans can have our opinions.  I don't think being told to "shut up" is appropriate.  Even for you - you got to have your opinion.  I have mine.  It's not the end of the world.

that's the world we live in now. No decorum. I dont agree with all of you but will never tell you to shut up for sharing your opinion. I enjoy reading the different views and evolving my thoughts through these differing opinions.

  5. This is the 2nd long interview I've listened to with Cronin. He's a person with many profound lessons that will help a very young team. They way he talks about his life (ups and downs)  and translates it into the hockey rink in terms of direction, responsibility, cultural work ethic, accountability is something this young team and locker room needed desperately. He may not have experience being a head coach in the NHL, but I do appreciate his experiences in teaching young hockey players about accountability as an athlete and a person.

Ross Johnston >>> Max Comtois??? i guess it's a height thing??

I'm not a fan of the pickup, but from what i've read from various NHL sources, Johnston is the quintessential locker room character. Players speak highly of him as a teammate and person. I'm sorry but I've given up on Comtois early last season. If you bring half-assed efforts in a bottom 6 role, then I don't see much worth. He brought zero energy. The big downside of Johnston is 1.1m for 3 more years, but in terms of bringing in a strong team-first personality and being the prototypical role player , maybe it'll improve  the dull locker room atmosphere of last season. Just to reiterate, not a fan of the money being spent on him.

So Zegras & Drysdale both have contracts that expire in 3 years, and we get to go through this all over again, perhaps with arbitration involved the next time.

In 3 years they will have a better sense of where they belong in the nhl. They'll be more proven and will have a better position in determining their true value. 5.75m and 2.3m AAV for Zegras and Drysdale sounds right. Again we're only hearing this from one side. We have no idea if Zegras agent asked for 8m and Drysdales agent asked for $4m. those demands would be as ludicrous as Verbeek's lowball offer but we only hear that side of the story.

  8. worst...GM...ever ...!!!

joking aside, the fact verbeek got Jamie to sign 2.3m AAV for 3 years is impressive. That's a deal i expected a player would accept for 2 years.

Could there be a possibility that Zegras and Drysdale don't WANT to play for the Ducks, and are hoping a different team steps up and signs them?

I think we're just seeing the ugly side of business in sports. Both parties want the best. Again we don't know if the $3-4m is a counter offer and not the starting offer from Verbeek. We're not hearing the whole story. Zegras's agent coudlve said we want $8m+ and Verbeek knowing how outrageous that is countered with $4m so they can meet in the middle somewhere. Like I said this is the ugly side of sports. I want to remind you that Rakell and Lindholm didn't sign their first RFA contracts 3 weeks into the regular season. If i recall they practiced in Sweden with an SHL club during the entire training camp and first weeks of regular season.

  10. Obviously any player will be frustrated with this kind of situation. I don't need to be an expert hokcey insider to tell you that. But the anger and frustration you're sharing on the link stems from Elliott Freidman's speculation. Not a first hand account that he was told they're bitter and angry at management. The second link literally piggy backed off Friedman's speculation and ran with it.

Someone else in the front office needs to be fired for this. Jarmo, Davidson, I don’t know who, but someone. Bad enough that Babcock was hired with such a sketchy past, but the way CBJ org went about jumping to defend him before any external investigation was done has made a lot of people look very, very bad IMO.

I'm wondering how the younger guys on the team feel that their captain Jenner and franchise star Gaudreau publicly stated that there was nothing strange about the situation. And how they felt going through their phones was a good ice breaker getting to know eachother. This was notably stated earlier in the week before the investigation, so not sure if they felt pressure to protect themselves and management first. But even so, as a young player hearing the statements, I would feel a lack of unity from up top.

I dont believe so. However, he is only 18 and cant go to the AHL.

I believe this only applies to players under 20 who were drafted out of the CHL, and their rights still belong to the CHL team. Carlsson would be eligible to play in the AHL.

woah...i never even paid attention to that for ELCs....

is this...common? have we done this before? Did Fantilli do this? Will Bedard? Did McDavid?? Do we get to know WHAT the bonuses are he has to meet? wow.... $3.25mil in bonuses....

Looked at the last 4 major top 10 draft picks:

    McTavish $2.5m annual performance bonus

Drysdale, Zegras, and Lindholm $850K annual performance bonus each

For the hell of it looked at Ritchie too since he was a #10 pick and we gave him $500K the first year and $850K next two in performance bonus.

Carlsson's incentives are significantly higher. I'm not sure if that entices him to want to start in Anaheim instead of the SHL.

I just got back from camping for a few days and I wanted to chime in with my two cents on our FA pickups.

Killorn feels like a bad contract waiting to happen. Why not just keep Henrique? Aren't they about the same age yet it seems like Henrique is said as being too old yet we pick up Killorn?

I agree that Killorn's contract is too high, but in order to bring someone to a crap team with no prospect of being competitive in 2 years, you have to unfortunately overpay.

When it comes to Henrique vs Killorn, I don't look at the comparable age here. Henrique's compete level is nowhere near Killorn's, nor is his history. With the constant losing atmosphere in the locker, the winning mentality Killorn brings with his extensive experience of battling deep in the trenches is invaluable (4 stanley cup runs). He brings a lot more to the locker room. Henrique has only made the playoffs twice, the second being a sweep. Again, I'd rather have someone who understands what it takes.

I hope Klingberg lost his agents number. I believe he had an 8 yr $56+ million offer on the table by dallas 2 years ago. He'll never see that type of money ever again .

Good signings. Not sure why the negativity. We were the last team in the league. Of course we have incentivize some good players to come.

Because it's always doom and gloom with many on this platform. Getting tired of the impatient negativity. Many think being a GM is playing a video game and that you can convince and sign anyone on your team. Adding Killorn and Gudas is a great start in this off-season given the lack of locker room leadership and grit on this team. We'll see what Verbeek has up his sleeves with "more things to come".

Is WJ’s and WC North American ice?

It depends who hosts the tournament. For WJ that's usually the case since Canada and the US hosts most of these events. For WC it'll be on the larger ice surface. I believe Finland plays on a hybrid ice size somewhere in between NHL and IIHF size.

No.  Getzlaf, Perry, Kesler, and Bieksa were the only guys that draft who contractually HAD to be protected.  Vermette could have been made available.

    https://www.nhl.com/ducks/news/ducks-to-protect-11-players-in-2017-nhl-expansion-draft/c-289978788

Here is a snippet of the rule:

"Teams were required to protect any contracted players with no move clauses (NMCs) with one of the team's slots for protected players, unless the contract expired on July 1, 2017, in which case the NMC was considered void for the draft.[9][10] Players whose NMCs had limited no trade clauses had to still be protected".

I assumed his 8 team NTC covered it, but i may be misinterpreting the rules.

    Why did we protect Vermette?

he had a no movement clause and was required to be protected...yes i know, believe it or not, murray gave him a 2 year contract with a no movement clause.

Quick was actually on the bench for the entire SCF series as Hill’s primary backup. Brossoit and Thompson were scratches.

Yea what I meant by my comment is that he was behind Brossoit and Hill in terms of support. Keep in mind also that they started the playoffs with Brossoit and Hill, and Brossoit got hurt.
