Dude....why did Quick get a skate with it BEFORE Hill?! that's insane.....also Quick's name isn't going to get on the cup, right??? he did like...nothing lol

I'm betting he'll be retiring and the team knows it. Quick's skate was more out of respect of an amazing hockey career. There was a difference the way his teammates applauded him raising the cup versus the jubilant screams, as if it was a curtain call standing ovation. He didn't touch the ice in the playoffs but having a 2x cup champion in the locker room is massive to have behind Brossoit and Hill, two highly inexperienced goalies.

well, it’s reported that Gibson has requested a trade.

Dubas has been after him for a while in the last couple offseasons. I believe a rumor came out that Gibson and his agent emphatically said no to playing on a Canadian team when it was leaked the Leafs had a trade set with the Ducks last summer. Now Dubas runs the show in GIbson's hometown Pittsburgh. With Gibson wanting out of a rebuild and Jarry being a UFA this summer, I wont be surprised if Dubas is knocking at the doors again.

Yeah absolutely no one has talked about Fowler as some Wunderkind since maybe his rookie year. A 40+ point defenseman who gives you a quality 25 minutes a night is a top pairing defensemen, I said he’s not a #1 defenseman and commented that there’s really a handful of those guys even in the league. No one not even me thinks he’s a top 10 defensemen in the league and I don’t recall anyone ever saying that. I can praise Fowler, think he’s been our best defensemen for going on 5 years and acknowledge he isn’t a superstar, but most teams would kill to have a Fowler on their team. The original discussion was that scouts were right to let him slide to 12, when that’s just fundamentally wrong.

Fair point, and i realized you never mentioned hes not a #1 so there was no need for me to continue to defend my position with you. Again, basing my commentary around people in the pregame bars or restaurants when i have hockey conversations with Ducks fans. And the struggle i have with how a lot have viewed him even during the last 5 years.

Now you’re just talking about salary semantics, his AAV is 6.5. 6.5 now gets you a middle pairing defenseman and a top pairing defenseman is like 7-9 million at least. He had 22 points in 36 games those three years in the playoffs. He also had a goal and assist that made the comeback on Karelia even possible. This is just revisionist history

Yes salary semantics is important here because it impacts how a GM needs to create cap flexibility (being it internally or having to meet the capfloor), and how it impacts moving other pieces or attaining players we need. For example not re-signing Perron back in the day. I agree He is a good defender. I dont disagree. My struggle is mainly how ducks fans have talked about him as if he's this wunderkind. The way Hazy overly praises him or the way i see Ducks fan see him as this top core dman is someting i dont agree. I dont need to have a back and forth match with you bc you clearly agree that he's not a top line defenseman either. So you're not the person i have a gripe against. It's based on other discussion when he's seen as this great top 10 NHL defensemen. And to be fair, a lot of ducks fans at the Honda Center are not knowledgeable about hockey to begin with.

I just think you’re fundamentally wrong and show a severe lack of understanding of hockey. The team sucks so blaming him is weird. He’s been our best defensemen for a long time. Before the trade he was better for several years than Lindholm. He’s not a #1 defensemen he’s a very good #2. To use the term “serviceable” is laughable. I also implore you to go look around and ask how many true number one defensemen are even in the league?

I've watched hockey for a very long time. i have a strong understanding of hockey --you can talk to my peers about this....a lot my predictions and notions of the game actually ends up reality...im just adding this point bc of your assumption of my severe lack of understanding and not about me trying to brag or anything. I didnt imply that the team sucks and therfore im blaming him. just saying that proving he's a really good defensemen based on the last 3 years is moot. im basing it off of the performance i saw in 2015-2018 specifically where he essentially is a non factor in big moments in the playoffs. thats a reality.

Cam Fowler is not a 1D, nor is he paid like one.  He's a #2 d-man, a guy who can play on a first pairing and be good, and he's paid as such.  1Ds are paid more than $7 million.

As a 2D, Fowler has been good for the Ducks his entire career.  His only problem is other people's expectations of him have been unreasonable.  He's not Scott Niedermayer, nor should he have been.

when he was signed in 2018, $7-8M was a high salary for defensemen though. he got paid $7.5M with a couple years having lower salary hit to reduce the cap. But he was still paid $7.5M which was 3rd highest salary i think on the roster at the time. After seeing his performances in the playoffs 2015-2018 i was shocked Murray signed him to that contract, given i thought we should have been all in on Lindholm at the time.

Cam Fowler is a very good defensemen. I have bad news for you if you think #1 defensemen only make 6.5 million. And when people say that hockey sense is a meaningless term, because what do you even mean here? He’s always been responsible in his own end, most games the last few seasons he’s the only reason the ducks can even get out of their own end. Let’s be real here

At the same time we're the worst outscored team in the last 3 years too. Relatively speaking, yes he is our best at this point. But that doesn't really say much about him because more likely than not most 2nd pairing veteran on other teams could do the same for us. I agree that he is a good defenseman but i struggle like DT2008 why we see him as this top rated defenseman. He is serviceable at best and a really good "regular season" type defenseman. But his soft approach in the corners and in front of the net is something i never liked about his game.

I struggle with how much people defend Fowler.   The issue is that he is very much a serviceable, above average defenseman who is paid as a 1D.  The fact that his draft year produced only a handful of memorable players and even fewer defensemen is neither to Cam’s credit or detriment.   He is what he is, a well paid second paring guy whose hockey sense is not great.  I will give him credit for longevity.

I agree with you. I have never been a fan of considering Fowler a number 1 or 2. I've felt that way ever single year since 2015 during those deep playoff runs we had. He doesnt attack the dirty areas as needed; I have rarely seen him go on full beastmode in the playoffs; he gets pushed around too easily in front our net; I dont see "leadership" when i watch him on the ice whatsoever. If he was in the second unit and we had a strong top line, i'd be totally fine with him on the team. He is an important asset on any team with his skating ability and high IQ when he has the puck.  But I do find it troubling that Murray has placed him as this number 1 type player over the last 7-8 years, haveing moved pieces around but keeping him intact over those years.

I know you mentioned something in the other thread, Tommer, but just to address it here.  This is from Scott Wheeler's piece this morning:

It's not a certainty, but there are some (including those at Michigan) who don't think he'll stay in school.

Good to know that he made the world championship roster. Not many watch it, but it's usually a tournament I do follow here and there since it's a bigger deal for European countries. I will def have my eyes on the Canada games then.

If the Michigan staff expects him to leave, I would hope we should see him in the NHL next season. Is it common for Canadians to stay at a US college for 2 years?

don't count your centers before they're baked.  Z has (potentially) world-class center-vision on NHL ice, and he's proving it more and more every game.  McT seems to get a lot of milage being able to roam... more freely than typical centers, i think.

what position does Ovechkin play?  oh yeah, LW.

thats a good point as well. Zegras has incredible vision. I just think it benefits us more in the long run to have bigger size down the middle. If Gaucher can translate his "Selke" abilities to the NHL level, I'm very excited of seeing Fantili-McT-Gaucher develop as our core center group.

I wonder if this lottery result makes a bridge deal more likely for Zegras. His role is suddenly a bit more uncertain (wing/center and which line) and I could see a Timo Meier style bridge making sense for both sides.

If Fantili does in fact become our pick, the next 10 yrs can be set up as Fantili 1C and McTavish 2C, while Zegras becomes a bonafide top line winger with more freedom to use his offensive flair. With that in mind he would become our main franchise winger, and maybe that guarantees him an 8 yr deal with us. We dont have a legit franchise winger in our prospect pool.

When the positioning is being announced, shouldn't we be hoping that one of the 12-16 teams moves up 10 spots in their position, since that would be an indication that they possibly drew the #1 pick, but couldn't move up that high, and the Ducks would end up getting their #1 spot?

I realize it's no guarantee, since #16 could draw #4, and only move up to #6, which would be of no benefit to the Ducks, but it's certainly hopeful, since 8% of the Ducks' chances are tied into those 5 teams.

I think the draw is only done for the number 1 and number 2 pick. Correct if I'm wrong. #16 can only draw #1 and #2 pick and that's it. Meaning they wouldnt get those picks since they can only move up 10 spots.

  13. From the internal issues I've heard from Kings and Flames players despite the successes he's had, absolutely NO. He's already lost the Flames locker room after a year and based on stories from former Kings players I've heard on podcasts, a lot of players despised him. He is the opposite of what the Ducks need at this point, and he is the opposite of what the "modern" hockey players needs. I would be slightly more inclined if we were talking 5-7 years ago when we had Getz, Perry, Kesler, and handful of old school and veteran players, but we're in a transition in which we are adding bunch of 19-24 year olds into the roster. Sutter is not the guy at this point.

When I look at how the Oilers' cap is structured, I think it is definitely possible to sign Terry to a longer contract (6 years?) somewhere in the $6Ms. McDavid is at $12.5M and Draisaitl is at $8.5M (Zegras will be less than this) and then they have Hyman, Nuge, and Kane all in the mid-$5Ms. Ekholm at $6M (comparable to Fowler) and Nurse at $9.5M eat up a good chunk of their cap on defense. The Oilers are tight to the cap right now, but by 2026 (when Bedard would be due his big contract and also when Fowler's expires) everybody is saying that the cap will be close to $90M. So if you want to draw a comparison to a current team that has that $100M player, the Ducks could have something like this going into the 2026-27 season:

Bedard ($12.5M), Zegras ($7.5M), Terry ($6.5M), McTavish ($7.25M), Drysdale ($5.5M), and that still leaves plenty of room for another big money contract on the back end (Minyukov?). and the cap should be $8M more than it is today. So I think it's doable.

Whether it fits Verbeek's image of how this team should play.... that remains to be seen.

Yea very good point about the cap expected to go up over the next 3-4 years. If the Samuelis are willing to spend max cap then yea it's possible.

I don't think they are anywhere near deep enough to trade Terry unless they are getting a goal-scorer back.  If they want to get better.

If they want to pick Top 5 again next season, then I could see it.  I seriously doubt their plan is to pick Top 5 next season.

I totally understand the perspective, but logistically something needs to give if we end up with the number 1 pick. I just can't see Terry on anything longer than a 3 year deal. I guess my gut hope instinct with Crosby's and McDavid's immediate impact is that Bedard would be that goal scorer you get back this summer. With Fowler, Henrique, Strome (maybe?) totaling $17M off the books by 2026 maybe it is possible to give him a 5 year extension.

  16. If we do end up winning the lottery on May 8th, how do you think this will impact Verbeek's decision to re-sign Terry and Zegras? If Bedard ends up being as succesful the first 3 years during his ELC as we all hope, you as a franchise have to prepare to sign a potential 8 yr $100M in 2026. You have to make a decision of the 5 or so players you want to build around. Bedard, Zegras, and McTavish up front, and deciding who of Drysdale/Minyukov/Luneau/Zellweger (pure projection here) are your core longterm Defensemen? I can't see Verbeek signing Terry to a longterm deal (maybe 3 years max when you then have to deal with Bedard's big contract). If Terry prefers a longer contract I can actually see Terry traded this summer for Verbeek to incorporate Bedard into his longterm plans. I am fine with that decision if we get a decent return (maybe like a 2nd rd pick this summer). With the playoffs starting next week, and having watched a lot of games during the course of the playoff push the last couple months, it's hard to see a line with Zegras AND Terry find success in a long playoff grind. The top 8 in the West can easily contain the two of them together.

Who did he develop for us in San Diego? He was HC there for four years from 2015-2019.

I'm looking at his success with both Toronto and San Diego. I wasn't trying to isolate players he developed, moreso that he's a contributing factor to success when he coaches in the minor league and his relationship with young players. The fact he finds success when a young pro is in his "developmental stages" tells me that his mentorship skills and relationship does hold weight (albeit useless in the NHL since he is a horrible bench coach). I was speaking more to the mental development of getting a young player ready to be a pro.

Time to bump this thread! [Finally!!!]

So who's on the list now?

I'm seeing that Laviolette's contract is expiring and he and Washington have not yet negotiated an extension. Lavs would be an amazing hire IMO. Rod Brind'Amour was on the 32 Thoughts podcast the other day and he said Laviolette was the best coach he ever had. High praise from a guy who has his own Jack Adams award.

Brunette? Dineen? Travis Green? Rikard Gronborg? Who else are we looking at?

Didnt realize Laviolette's contract was expiring. He would be an excellent hire.

Eakins is a good minor-league coach. He'll find a new job in AHL quickly.

Nice guy, but it's a tough business, bro.

Could be beneficial to fix the Gulls and have him coach there again. He's great with young guys and the developmental aspect of the game.

Yes a good start, but as others have said, PV also owns this debacle in many ways, and I agree.  Wonder if the Samuelis have been meeting with other potential GMs?   I know I would if in their shoes.   Not that I would pull the trigger too fast, but if PV knew this was happening, he’d be more inclined to seek a winning situation with players and staffing over the possibility of cronyism in any future decisions.

Why would they be in meetings with other GMs? Verbeek literally started the job in the second half of last season. And understanding the time it takes to come into a whole new organization, getting to know the corporate and management staff, getting to know the people in your new environment, and then analyzing the roster/prospects/depth, he likely got into a rythm less than 12 months ago. I don't understand this concept that managing an actual sports team is like playing a video game (which I feel like many here make it out to be) -- it takes time to put together a plan that works in the longterm. My opinion of Verbeek starts this summer and not the last 15 months whatsoever.
