Blues have three 1st round picks in the upcoming draft. They’ve done well and have a lot of options.

Wow that's incredible. This is one of the deepest draft pool in a long time. They can rebuild and draft good players, or flip a couple of those picks for actual solid assets over the summer for a quick retool.

Blockbuster. O'Reilly to Toronto. Great return for STL

I mentioned on another thread but with the cap being tight this year for playoff bound teams, Ducks should take advantage and be a 3rd participant on cap retention type deals if it relates to trades for expiring rental players. Minnesota basically got a 4th rd pick for helping blues and leafs by retaining a portion of o'riellys cap hit.

  3. Very interesting trade with O'Rielly to the Leafs. Minnesota stepped in to retain a portion of his cap hit to make it work for Blues and Leafs, for a 4th rd pick. With cap space being tight this trade deadline I think Verbeek should look at being a 3rd participant in these types of cap retention deals (for rental deals only) and accumulate a good number of draft picks.

So yeah, they tied it up 2-2, went ahead 3-2...and then LOST MISERABLY 3-7 and it's not even Boston.

EXCUSE ME? 141 is conveniently divisible by 3 and equals 47 per game. I understand 30, understand allowing 35 per game. But 47 three games in a row and letting in 6, then 7 and another 7 goals in a row is ludicrous!

Dallas Eakins has to be removed from behind the bench this instant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Promote one of the assistants, hire someone from the street, let PV coach this burning trashcan himself, jut change something!!! Anything? Pretty please?

I've made the realization at the 10 game mark that I'll watch the dumpster fire ensue, and just pray for the draft lottery to go our way. If we stay the course and end up with Bedard or Fantili, I will just erase the 2022-2023 season from the history books and move forward. My hope through this dumpster fire was for Z and McTavish to get points for statistics, which at least is happening. I am actually very surprised there are 2 teams worse than us at this point of the season....well at least surprised by the Jackets with the Laine-Gaudreau hype during the offseason.

I can't believe a career minor-leaguer Phoenix Copley has a better save% and GAA then all our goaltenders.

for a goalie who is 16-3 and in a playoff position, his GAA and save % isn't that impressive. the kings play an incredibly structured game and allow one of the fewest shots per game. his stats tells me the team in front of him probably only allows 25 shots a game and he allows about 2-3 despite the tight defensive structure. I'm going to tell that Gibson would likely be closer to 2.3 GAA and 92% with the kings.

You underestimate the toll it takes on your mental and physical fatigue to be bombarded 40-50 shots a same. Eventually once you allow 40 consistently the precise focus to save the next shot likely diminishes due to fatigue.

  6. I'm surprised we're 50+ games into the season and we've opened up a new thread to discuss how soft we are. They have been soft for years. Just ask Gibson and the pounding he's received for 4 years in his own crease.

I think it's definitely possible, since Bedard is really the only guy the Ducks could draft this year who might impact where Zegras eventually plays in the lineup. Maybe Zegras fancies himself as a center and would be worried about being moved to the wing if we got Bedard? I dunno. I just feel like there are more moving pieces than it appears from the outside. If the situation was as clean and straight forward as it seems on the surface, Zegras would be signed by now. Or at least within the next month or so.

Bedard has been prolific on the right wing though. That's where he played in the world juniors with Shane Wright in center, and he played on the wing with McTavish centering last year. Adam Fantili actually is the true natural center. He played on the wing early in the worlds largely because of the center depth Canada had, but he struggled. He was back in form when they moved him back to center later in the tournament. I can see Zegras being the second line center if we end up with Bedard, with McTavish centering the first line.

I'm starting to worry - just a little, but still - about how good they will be next season.  To me, it looks like they will have a tough time being an 80-point team next season, and that won't even be anywhere near threatening for a playoff spot.

A lot depends upon the new coach - if there is one - and the offseason acquisitions.

This upcoming high draft pick will have the smallest effect - by far - on next season's team, despite what many fans dream about.

Seeing this team makes me think we're now a few years off from being good. I thought during the off-season that maybe one more subpar year, but doesn't seem to be the case anymore. But to be honest, seeing Bedard dominate the WHL as a 17 year old has me salivating though for long term success. If he dominates the junior worlds in a few weeks, we can hopefully get something to be excited about after several awful years--albeit number 1 pick is not guaranteed. Penguins and Hawks have won 3 titles with the core after horrendous consecutive seasons. Wish the turnaround would happen next year with Bedard in the picture, but agree that there's a lot of work to be done to get this team to be an 80-85 point team.

The scary part about being the worst team in the league is no one care in the executive office.

Verbeek has been around the organization since February. With the work transition of needing to analyze and research all aspects of the franchise from a top level to a detailed player by player analysis, I would say he really started this job over the summer. Work transitions take time on a personal level too....this isn't a video game where you come in and make drastic changes right away. Having come from a class organization like the Lightning, I am very confident that we will be in the right place next summer. The execs do care, which is why they took their time hiring the right GM. The financial impact of low attendance and not making the playoffs is pretty significant for a small market team like Anaheim. It is crucial from a business perspective they have a strong team. It doesn't make sense to assume execs don't care.

On a separate note, when I watch my team in the Swiss league season by season , the effect of being in the bottom is constant heartache week to week of praying your team won't get relegated to the 2nd division 😆. We're lucky here in that we only worry about getting Bedard, and turn the page to next season.

I'm watching the Devils - Edmonton game and it's just startling to watch the Devils break out of the zone cleanly every single time.  It's one thing to watch a team do it to the Ducks; the Ducks don't have a system or anyone who can really forecheck well.  Edmonton isn't great, but they're a decent team and seeing the Devils make clean passes to players skating into open space makes me insanely jealous.  I want that so badly.

i enjoy following Devils games. I tend to follow my fellow Swiss players here and there, but especially the Devils having a swiss captain and following their incredible win streak...now at 13. But you're absolutely right in the way they transition. And the speed they attack the zone and cycle in the offensive zone is very entertaining. In due time once we add Bedard, we'll have the tools to mimick a similar type of game.

I think I'll start calling #49 by nickname "Jones the Invisible". 10 games, no goals, 1 assist, no hits, no shots, no offensive threat, no defensive plays, making circles around and hard to notice that he even exists. If within next 5 games he won't score a goal or at least make some meaningful assist, I would have to add him to my "blacklist".

I had so much hope for Jones with his excitement of returning to the lineup. He had a great camp and preseason. The more I watch him, the more I realize I overestimated his hockey IQ. The Ducks are a bit soft so from that perspective we do need the physical attributes, but to your point it doesn't seem like that part of his game has been that noticeable either. I'll give him 5 more games as well and hopefully he can find his place.

I'm just gonna say this, in regards to how the Ducks may have been able to keep Drysdale's injury from being so negatively impactful:

Montour, Theodore, Manson, Lindholm, Pettersson, Mahura, Hakanpaa

Verbeek's biggest mistake was dumping Josh Mahura. I mean look at the Sabres' broadcast....24th in active goal scoring 😂

The 2nd ranked draft prospect just turned 18 2 weeks ago and has 16 points in 7 NCAA games, playing for Michigan. There’s also a hotshot Russian available too. Good year to have a top 3 pick. Embrace the pain.

unfortunately the russian is signed with KHL through 2026. I don't know if the Ducks can wait this long for a prospect given their current state.

This team is playing like an expansion team whose players just met each other.  I know the roster is poor, and the players have underperformed, but this collection of players shouldn't be this bad, right?  I'm more and more convinced every day that the locker room without Getzlaf, Manson, and Deslauriers is devoid of leadership, and they've completely checked out on Eakins without any internal voices to hold them accountable.

I don't think Verbeek can let this go on much longer without long-term damage being done.

Completely agree with your points here.

This is from an interview with Tortorella during camp:

“As far as the room, I have major concerns about the room,” Tortorella said on the show. “I’ve spent the summer going back and forth. I live in New York, and I go back and forth to Philly trying to relocate there. But spent some time in the office talking to players, talking to personnel, talking to Chuck [Fletcher], all the front office. And I have major concerns about what goes on in there.”

The culture, leadership, and direction starts from the coaching staff. Torts knew the crappy team he inherited but he sure as heck knows how to push the buttons. I'm not saying to get a coach like Torts, but they need a coach that understands the importance of a team culture.

I said what I said about Deslauriers above, and I'm not taking it back.  He really could be a difference-maker in the locker room.

However, Philadelphia has been the luckiest team in the NHL thus far.  They've been outshot worse than any team not named the Ducks or Coyotes but have ridden a hot goalie, some luck, and some decent special teams to three wins.  Regression is coming, and that right soon.

The flyers are bad on paper and were expected to be at the bottom of the league. But one thing i notice with them is they play hard on the puck (typical Torts). That hard nose and aggressive play is something that is completely non existent in the Ducks game. You can definitely say Deslauriers is likely a strong locker room influence, but as I mentioned on a separate post, the culture begins with the coach. Eakins just needs to go.

Is he really your brother? I personally don't know him, and I am sure in real life he is a nice gentleman. But we are discussing hockey here, not personalities, and it's open-minded forum.

not sure what you mean. i'm just pointing out that we nicknamed him "cam flower" because he is a soft player. it's an internal joke that i wanted to share with you, because i agree with you that he is soft. i have no relation with Cam whatsoever.

I am advocating for a few years now to move on from some softies who has been in our defensive corps for many years. That guy who was expected to be our new Scott Neidermayer, have been a symbol of mediocracy for more than a decade now. I never forget 2015 Conference finals, game 6 when Anaheim could close the series and move to the finals. Patrick Kane slicing thru him time after time after time and scoring 2 quick goals. Chicago wins the game and then wins decisive game 7 two days later.  Now, having Drysdale and Zellweger coming next season, we'll have 3 (!!!) similar-style, soft skating, smallish non-physical defenseman? Makes no sense to keep them all, regardless who will be the coach next season. Someone has to go.

Now, let's move on to our new GM. While everyone playing drums on this forum about his greatness, I have an approach "show me first what you can do". I look at cross-town rival, a Hollywood team that acquired a young, prolific, proven scorer Kevin Fiala for draft picks; he will be scoring multiple goals against our team for the next 7 years. The same amount of money PV spent on Vatrano (after getting rid of Milano, a redundant move in IMHO, but hopefully I am wrong) + a generous contract for Ryan Strome, who by the age 29 for the first time ever scored a whopping 21 goals last season. And selecting Mintyukov in the first round is a big question mark. I am not saying PV is not a good manager, but so far I see what I see. And extending this minor-league coach adds to the list of his questionable moves. As I mentioned here before, I don't remember any team in ANY professional sports that would extend their head coach after 3 failed seasons.

My brother and I have called him Cam "Flower" for about 7 years as well. I appreciate his offensive game and his puck recovery, but his tenacity and battles in the corners in big time games are pretty subpar.  Murray's mistake was having him be like our franchise #1. Had he been like a 2nd pairing dman I would not be as critical. His cap hit doesn't scream #1 in todays nhl so it's not as impactful on our cap, but I'd be ok moving on from him after 2023-2024 given Mintyukov and Zellweger are knocking at the next couple years.

  18. I never expected them to be a playoff team this year, so I was prepared for losses. I projected 80-82 points, but now believe this may be too optimistic if this defensive structure continues. Under Verbeek I did expect a team with a higher compete level, and a harder team to play against compared to the last couple seasons. I thought to myself that as long as they showed that fight, that the losses would be more acceptable. These first 2 games were disappointing and the complete opposite in terms of an elevated compete level than I expected. Fowler and Henrique are being their usual soft-selves....we keep hearing that leadership will be coming from veterans like them, Shatt, Silf, but none of that has been translated on the ice. I will wait until the end of the road trip  to make a full assessment but this doesn't look good. Eakins doesn't have the pedigree to be an NHL coach. His soft spoken nature and player friendly attitude fits well in the AHL where he can be a motivator for the young players, but he's way above his head here. He seems content to collapse so low and let the opponents skate circles around them, to just stick-check and poke away as if hockey is a non-contact sport, and seems just fine that we play a non-contact mentality protecting the crease. It has been the same old crap since 2018. We can talk about  finding leaders on the ice but the identity should be coming from the coach. Whenever the camera pans to him he looks at the jumbotron.....he's probably looking at the clock and already counting down the season.

OK - Last time I did this I was REALLY wrong - In a bad way 😬.   So, let's try it again!  How do you think the Ducks will finish in the standings this season?

I think they'll finish one spot out of the playoffs with 94-97 points.  Which would be a welcome improvement, I might add!

    What do you all predict?

Ha, good to see a very very optimistic fan here!! 80-82 points is what i'm projecting. My guess is they be within 8 points of playoffs all the way to early March, so at least I'll be watching some meaningful games later into the season than the last few years.

a few comments.....when you say "he just turned 22", keep in mind that Gibson was only 20 when he played against Kings in 2014 playoffs. Vladislav Tretiak was 20 when he held his ground against powerful Canada team in 1972 Summit games. Spencer Knight is now one of the Florida's starting goaltenders and he is only 21. I don't buy the argument that goaltender with the great potential has to be marinated in the minors because he is "young". It may not seat well with neither Dostal nor his agent. My understanding is the best players have to make final roster, regardless of contract situation. AS of now, Lukas Dostal is better than Stolarz, IMHO.

As far as Gibson, I as a dedicated Ducks fan, want him to succeed. But if he has another bad season, nobody will give a second round for him, given his contract situation and years remaining on it,

Yes agreed with your points if Dostal is an elite goalie significantly better than Gibson. With the horrendous defense of last couple years, Dostal would also have been lit up pretty badly and we would be talking about why in the world we're allowing Dostal to be playing in the NHL at 20-22 years old. I know Dostal will be our franchise goalie in a couple years. His mechanics look great, but i dont think he's there yet to be our #1 at this point, and he's stuck in a situation where we have Stolarz still signed (so i do think there's a contractual situation at play preventing Verbeek to risk waivers to drop him to SD). Verbeek oversaw the development of Vasilevski who the Lightning threw in at 21 years old. If there's someone that has handled an elite young goalie in the past, then I trust what Verbeek is doing. Let the season speak for itself. If there's a goalie issue midway then recall Dostal down the line.

  21. 7 hours ago, FanSince1993 said:

Lukas Dostal sent down to the minors, I am very upset about it. I thought in pre-season games he was better than Stolarz and Gibson, but that's how the politics works...Players with big, guaranteed contracts have guaranteed spots on the roster.

He just turned 22. Only the most elite goalies in history play in the NHL at that age. He'll be a great goalie but certainly isn't elite at this point. I'm completely fine having him start in San Diego until Stolarz's contract ends. We can talk about him getting 15-20 games in the nhl next season. We develop him slowly and make him the next franchise goalie.

To appease your position (knowing your dislike of Gibson from your posts), Gibson plays strong but not good enough to keep us competitive by March. We can discuss trading him to a playoff team for a 2nd rounder, and a prospect, we tank hard, and we get Bedard. Happy?

The Zegras interview on Spittin Chiclets is pretty funny. Sounds like he loves living in Newport Beach and might have the most Californian personality of someone not from the state. He mentioned Verbeek changing the culture right when he became GM.

I feel better about him signing a max deal now.

They had McTavish last week on their podcast as well. Doesn't sound like a 19 year old. The opposite of Zegras lol.
