  1. I didn't realize the cap nightmare Minnesota was in with Parise and Suter making up $14M of the cap the next 3 seasons. With Matt Boldy and Marco Rossi moving up to be franchise players the next couple seasons, there's no way Minnesota can hold onto their current roster . I think Verbeek should take a serious run at trading for Fiala's RFA rights during the draft. Would be great to see a hustling forechecker with scoring skills playing alongside Z.

facepalm trade We get 2 fourth-line guys nobody wants. A 2 goals per season 31 year old.

the fact you call Helleson and Vaakanainen two "4th line players" makes me guess you have not done your research. odd thing to say about two young defensemen, especially one who just completed his college season.

So 4.75 for the last three years?  That seems he'd still be putting out that kind of value at that age.  That's Manson money.

it sure is a good "3 year term" at the end of his contract. verbeek likely focused mainly on his young guys and upcoming picks that he can control. still, even with an 8 year deal it's not like the deal handcuffs boston down the line. it's still a contract that looks enticing for a trade 6 years from now.

    TRUE!

yeah...I don't understand why we couldn't do that....this isn't like Doughty where the Kings are paying him $11mil till he's 38....i dunno...the more I think about it the more it bugs me...

I guess we'll see what happens with the picks. ...and with Gibson.

my guess it's not so much about the 6.5m average cap hit but what would have been offered at 5 years. Hampus will be making $38m the first 5 years in his 8 year deal. This was likely something Verbeek didn't offer even at a 5 year deal. Maybe they offered 5 years 35M max?

Colorado's combo of great development and high drafting allowed us to make that steal. The fact they have Makar, Byram, and Girard made Helleson disposable. On any other team Helleson would be higher in the defensive prospect pool and likely untouchable.

I know, and this is the main reason I hope that he stays.

It's probably pretty much up to him.  Based on what Verbeek said, he doesn't want to lose free agents for nothing at season's end.  So unless he and Getz have a handshake deal for next season, it seems likely the Ducks could get something decent for him in return from a team that could use him in the playoffs, given his experience.

I think if he were to accept a trade, he would want something close to home.  That leaves Vegas & L.A. as likeliest.

I also believe that if Getz gets traded it'll truly be a rental, and that he'll sign with the Ducks over the summer. I'd be for trading him and getting some picks in return if a handshake deal is in place. Would be crazy to see him traded to tampa to create a 4th line of perry-getz-maroon. It'll be unlikely bc of Tampa's cap issues, but i'll be rooting for them if that happens.

This makes sense when the organization is right up against the cap, or close enough to it that they want to create room for a possible addition at the trade deadline.  That's not the case with the Ducks.  They have like $12 million in space.  Instead it just looks cheap, if that really is what they're doing.

That is true from the sports competitive perspective--i do agree with you there. I'm an accountant, so when it comes to managing my cashflow, I am always cheap :). The Samuelis are still running a business with pretty poor attendance this season, so any cash savings makes sense.

Yeah I thought Lettieri and buddy were sent back down after the last game

Ducks are playing the salary cashflow game here. Lettieri gets paid half with SD than he does with Anaheim. Ths is the luxury of having a farm team down the freeway. You'll see this type of roster juggling during off days for the rest of the year.

Oh speaking of bogus, I forgot their stadium is getting a new name too. I get why sponsored names are a thing but crypto dot com arena sounds so soulless and devoid of character (especially for a team in Hollywood) it's making me wish stadiums never sold out to begin with.

hey at least we get to coin the term "we're going to the crypt" whenever we play them.

I wonder if Vatanen wanted to play in Europe this season for some reason (covid?). It’s curious that he chose the Swiss league over The Finnish or Swedish league. It’s hard to imagine an NHL team wouldn’t give a 30 year old Vatanen a 1 year deal. He didn’t score at all last year so maybe no one thinks his offensive game will bounce back and they don’t want a small defenseman that doesn’t put up any points. Still, I’d think at least one team would have taken a chance on him which leads me to believe he’d rather play in Europe this year.

To answer your point about why not Swedish or Finnish league, the Swiss league is generally the highest paid league. They can pay foreign star players 750K-2M contracts, and many former NHLers play there (Winnik has played in Geneva for the last few year where Vatanen is now), and large majority of NHLers played there during the lockout. Plus the Swiss league has more lenient rules in terms of international contracts, and more leniency with NHL players breaking contracts to move to the NHL midseason I believe.

In terms of not taking a PTO contract, Vatanen is too good to even have to go to that route. Right now he is basically just staying in shape until an NHL team has a major injury in defense. He'll be signed by December. At least he's getting paid a decent contract while keeping in shape, whereas PTOs you're busting your butt off without a financial contract. I follow the Swiss league and he has like 2G 2A in his first 2 games. And it's not uncommon to see former older NHL players without contracts start in the Swiss league only to move to the NHL with a contract 4-6 weeks into the season. I've seen this happen every year. This is the reality of the salary cap era where teams prioritize the top players and younger cheaper contracts, and fringe players just have to wait it out. It's even more difficult now for Fringe players with the flat cap over the next couple years due to the pandemic.

Neither sell out as it is, so not sure it would change.  There are more Kings sweaters, sure, but I tend to think we have a more true fans within our clump of sweaters.

I live in Studio City. First I have to say that the San Fernando Valley has tons of knowledgeable Kings fans...I'm generally surprised that i see way more Kings stickers here than anywhere else in SoCal. I also agree it's a numbers games. The ratio of true fans vs casual fans vs bandwagoners are the same for Kings and Ducks i think.

I do love the idea of the Ducks train to SD. It's brilliant. Reminds me of the road games back home in Switzerland. Generally there's a special train(s) usually reserved for the road fans to travel. There would be hundreds in the train already drinking, singing, chanting before we even got to the destination.

Fact remains, at this moment, the Ducks are essentially the exact same team as last year.  Unless one expects guys like Zegras & Drysdale to suddenly become superstars, the results should be more or less the same.  That is why Vegas odds right now are 15,000 to 1 for the Ducks winning the Cup.  So if you're even the slightest bit optimistic, I suggest putting money down on them immediately.  The possibility of winning $15,000 for a $1 bet is pretty unbelievable.

    I believe they're +15000, not 15000:1. In the betting world +15000 means you win $15K with a $100 bet, so it's more like 150:1.

  13. I would assume local channels will be on Bally Sports and KDOC. They usually announce the local tv schedules much closer to the start of the season. The ESPN+ feeds would be blacked-out on our end I believe--let me know if I'm wrong here.

    It’s official

The good thing is that it's only 3x3 inches. At the same time from my perspective when I watch NHL and European hockey (Swiss League), while the Swiss League has overly colorful jerseys with bunch of ads, the NHL has 6 min of commercial breaks per period. We'll get the annoyance of seeing a 3x3 inch patch here, while a Swiss person gets annoyed to have to watch commercials during a hockey game like it's a tv show. Yea I get that we'll be irritated seeing ads when we buy new jerseys, but at same time we've been accustomed to have commercial breaks during hockey for 30+ years. For me (and when I have guests from Switzerland visiting), it was odd that there were that many commercial breaks in hockey when I moved to SoCal 25 years ago.

To be clear, he played in the 2nd division of Swiss hockey. He has size and grit, and captained the U18 Canada team. So at least we have character and leadership. On a personal note, his dad played for Rapperswil in the Swiss league, which is my team back home....so that's a cool connection for me.

we're missing all this extra stuff... all we're seeing so far is guesses at the selections....

Yep. We keep ignoring all of these additional picks and prospects they got from the background deals. Picks and prospect they were able to use to make them a stronger team by flipping them for assets such as Stastny, Pacioretty, Stone, Martinez, etc. They were in position in 2017 to build for the future.

He's happy with the roster and current contracts, cut him some slack.

If he's happy with the status quo, it will be a very tough 2-3 years as Ducks fans. We're not a team on the cusp of being a playoff team....we're far from it, and have been far from it for 2 years.

I didn't expect them to add a big name player or even a roster player by any means today. But I did hope for a couple trades that would give them the best financial situation going into the summer to make important moves.

I'm with you on RNH.  I don't see the appeal.  He's a good two-way center, but he didn't start becoming a point producer until McDavid showed up and started using him as a pinball bumper to score goals.  We'd be looking at paying a guy at least $7 - $8 million to be responsible defensively while putting up 45 - 50 points.  It would be fine if that were at the end of his contract, but that's going to be the beginning.  He'd be a massive disappointment on the Ducks.

I'm with Bombay.  There's no reason to break the bank for mediocre talent next offseason.  Dump salary through the expansion draft, get a new GM and coach in here, convince Getzlaf to stay and mentor the kids, keep Rakell, Fowler, Lindholm, and all the youngsters, dump everyone else, be really bad in 21-22 ahead of a great draft, win the lottery, draft Brad Lambert, sign Barkov, and win Cups for the next 10 years.  Done.

Look, this is stupid, but because I need to hope, here's an idiotic and completely unrealistic roster in 22-23:

    • Zegras - Barkov - Perrault
    • Comtois - Lambert - Rakell
    • Steel - Lundestrom - Silfverberg
    • Jones - Getzlaf - Terry
    • Lindholm - Drysdale
    • Fowler - Hakanpaa
    • Mahura - Thrun
    • Gibson - Dostal

We've had dumb-dumb general managing our team for a decade. nothing looks stupid when compared to his decision making.

Ya I knew but seeing this post again reminded me on how many players Vodka Bob has over paid.  Made me throw up in my mouth.

He was 2 years removed from a 50 goal season and Hart Trophy season. Bob had to pay him a high salary or he would likely would have been looking elsewhere. And Ducks fans would have been angry at the time had that happened. I can guarantee this ducks community would have be irate had Bob let Perry walk at the time. The writing was on the wall when hockey shifted to pure speed game around 2015. Perry never adapted to the modern game. Bob should have predicted what made perry great in the 2007-2013 era of hockey wouldnt work out in the future  (I know I did). Shouldve traded him when he still had value... should've done it after 2016/2017 season.

Wow I must have eliminated that period from my mind. 10 goals in 10 games and shutout 5 times? I guess things can be worse.....that team had a lot more talent though, they were in the Western Conference Final the previous season and back there the following season. The fact that they had just been successful made it more likely they could turn things around. I don't see any reason to believe that this time.

They got eliminated in the first round that year against Nashville, not the conference finals. When they lost in the conf finals it was under Carlyle the year after. The reason Boudreau got the pink slip is because it was the 4th season in a row they got eliminated with 3-2 leads in the series, and game 7 being at home.
