Evan Rodrigues sounds likely to end up in Anaheim.

Is this something you heard (source if you can share)? It would be a good depth signing to round out the bottom 6. High energy forechecker similar to Vatrano/Cogliano type (more Vatrano in that he has a good release). If Silf's injury is keeping him out, I can see:

    Henrique-Zegras-Terry

Vatrano-Strome-Comtois (only if we see the 2021 version)

    McTavish-Lundestrom-Rodrigues

    Jones-Grant-Carrick/Perrault

It's a forward lineup that can hover around .500 even with the defense we have. I dont see playoffs, but certainly something to build on. hoping that games will at least be somewhat meaningful mid-March.

I don’t think “just accept” a substandard coach is acceptable as a fan. That’s going into the endeavor as a lost cause right from the start. Who wants to support that? Not me.

That’s like going to buy a car with substandard brakes and the salesman says “just accept it” - next year you can get a car with really great brakes - you just need to wait. Just go to pick-a-part for now…

Believe me....i was very disappointed and annoyed Eakins was extended that early in the off-season. At that point I already knew what the off-season would look like. Like you, I am getting tired of being out of the race by Christmas. I get it from a fan point of view....i haven't gone to many games last few years bc the money isn't worth it...I hear you. But I still watch like 60+ games on tv because I want to see where the team is headed. I'm just saying accept it from the viewpoint that we have a new regime and that it doesn't take 12 months to turn things around. Give Verbeek two seasons (I think he was hired in Nov 2021?). I trust and am optimistic of the direction of the team. If this was another status quo summer with Bob Murray on charge, I'd display my frustration far more than I do now.

And don’t get me started on the level of utter amazement that the head coach is still the coach.

He will never be a successful head coach.

The fans should break out the Calgary flames chant at every home game that says ”you can’t win here!!!”

The fact Eakins is still the coach tells you that this season is another transition season. Just accept it. A transition to allow Verbeek to re-tool for one more season before Z, Terry, Drysdale await much bigger contracts, before we have a better idea of the potential of McTavish and Perrault, before we can see if Zellweger and Mintyukov are the next major players in the franchise, etc. I strongly believe this will be the last re-tool season though. I admit that the biggest cause for headache will be in the defense. you'll likely see Verbeek fill out the cap floor with a veteran defensive signing. Won't make or break the Ducks, but a veteran nonetheless. Before the season started last year i told my colleagues that the over/under was 75 points...i was spot on. I think they end up around 75-80 points again. Who knows maybe Z and McT will surprise us and make the season competitive and meaningful until late February. I know this may be another painful season, but i do look forward to the growth of Z, McT, Perrault, and Terry....i look forward to a team with more tenacity when you have Vatrano, Jones, McT, Carrick, and Strome who can relentlessly forecheck.

No need to put anyone on LTIR if we’re not near the upper limit. I calculate the Ducks as being currently about $3M-$3.75M below the cap floor without signing or trading for anyone else. That includes Silf and John Moore on IR (or Moore as the 7/8 D-man) and the rest of the roster filled in with Gulls like Benoit, Perreault, etc. Verbeek can get to the floor with just one more average sized contract in the $4M range or two smaller contracts in the $2M range. At this point, maybe they just bring back Milano and then also sign Calvin DeHaan for 1 x $2M or 2 x $2M contracts and call it a day.

Ah ok got it. The decision to place on LTIR is strictly under the discretion of the team. Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. Didn't realize you can put a player under IR "long term" without considering it a LTIR placement.

  5. After signing Lundestrom, Verbeek likely needs $8m to get to the cap floor, potentially $13m if Silf is in LTIR? Verbeek missed out on taking advantage of Columbus shedding salary, was ready to wake up on Thursday to get Niederreiter to Anaheim, and now Tkachuk has been traded with both parties covering their cap. Where is Verbeek going to find 8-13m in salary?

You would think Nyquist is definitely the odd man out with his 1 year remaining on his contract at like 5.5M. My pipedream would be acquiring Oliver Bjorkstrand, but that's probably wishful thinking.

ugh i just saw the news of the trade. the amount the Kraken gave up didn't seem like a pipedream at all now. he was more easily attainable than i thought....really thought columbus would've asked for a bigger package.

No worries! Interesting you mention Nyquist, since Laine just signed and Columbus now needs to move out a contract. I wonder if missing on Niederreiter pushed the Ducks to fall back on an offer from Columbus for Nyquist, which then precipitated the Laine signing.

I'm excited about Strome and Vatrano.  But it seems odd that no one has mentioned the other five signed.  I am puzzled about these signings though:

De Leo - 26 years old - 7 NHL games

    Gawdin - 25 years old - 9 NHL games

    Kirkland - 25 years old - 0 NHL games

    Strand - 25 years old - 21 NHL games

    White - 25 years old - 38 NHL games

Were these players signed to fill out the ranks at San Diego?  Does that mean a few youngsters will make the "big club" this year, creating openings for these new players?  They DO seem to have good minor league stats, but little to no NHL time.  Any thoughts?

AHL guys like Lettieri, Limoges, Larsson weren't re-signed (there are others but can't name them off the top of my head), so verbeek needs to fill out the Gulls roster. Im also thinking Perrault may be given a shot at the beginning of the season .

He’s 31 and he’s played nearly a full season of playoff hockey in the last 3 years. If you were going to sign someone in that range at least go with Burakovsky since he’s only 27 and could still be decent when the Ducks are ready to compete.

    Seattle already signed him.

If it's no more than 4 years and no more than Henrique's salary that's fine.

Palat - 4 yrs 23M (unfortunately 4 yrs bc i dont think Palat signs if it's 3 yrs)

    Ryan Strome - 3 yrs 15M

    Dylan Stome - 4 yrs 15M

I could live with those contracts. gives us 3 players with 15-20 goal potential. we'll have a couple veterans with cup experience and deep playoff runs. Keeps us within a solid budget to look ahead to Zegras and Drysdale's future contract. And likely gets us to the cap floor after signing Lundestrom, Benoit, and Vakkanainen

It's looking more and more like Gibson is staying put.  Who has a starting goalie need at this point?  Maybe Vegas?  Maybe Carolina looks to move on from Freddie Andersen?  But every team at least has a 1G solution.

also to add that Gibson has the 2nd highest cap hit. They're so far off from the cap floor, I can't see them moving him before the season.

Couldn’t they have just traded Dadanov and not brought cap back?.

Probably related to actual salaries and not cap. I'm guessing Weber will still be paid $3m this year despite being in LTIR? Not sure how the insurance works if he's retiring bc of injury. By trading away Weber, Montreal is getting rid of the salary obligation, which a wealthy ownership group like Vegas doesn't care paying as long as they can build their cup winning roster. The city of Las Vegas is all about going big and winning, with no care of spending. Montreal wouldn't just take on Dadonov's salary if the deal didn't include getting rid of Weber's salary. It's win-win...one team gets cap space, the other team gets a pretty good player.

I am surprised though that Vegas didn't ask for a pick to take on the salary dump. That's a miss by Vegas mgmt in my opinion.

Ducks legend Evgenii Dadonov has been traded to Montreal for Weber.

Looking forward to the statue that will be built in front of Honda Center for a great former Duck.

Joking aside....Vegas pretty much cleared $5M of cap space since I'm assuming Weber goes straight to LTIR for the rest of his career?

The way Drysdale played this season, I wouldn't worry about investing too much in him. However, quite a few talented forwards will be available this off season. It's been a while since Ducks fan base was exited about summer UFA acquisition.

I understand he wasn't all-star caliber, but he was only 19. He has incredible mobility and his physicality for someone his size will only get better over time---I prefer his willingness to get dirty over Fowler over the past decade. His hockey sense on the PP as a 19 year old is incredibly important for a team that has struggled for years. His hockey IQ on the rush as a 19 year old is also incredibly impressive.  I'm struggling hard to see why we shouldn't invest in a player like him.

They're going to want the 10th pick and probably Drysdale for Fiala. I've seen rumors that the Devils are willing to give up the #2 pick for Fiala.

The UFA's I'm looking at this offseason are Domi, Trocheck, Vatrano and Nick Paul. Slim Pickens on defense though.

With Silverberg, I'm just waiting for him to go on LTIR again or put him on waivers and pray to the hockey gods that someone takes him.

It'll probably be something like Gibson + 1st rd (10th pick)+3rd rd pick for Fiala+cheap roster player+ Talbot. Minnesota gets a goalie that can get them deep in the playoffs (at cheap 6.4M for starting goalie), and gets to dump salary by moving Talbot and not re-signing Fiala. I dont think they're necessarily looking for prospects or addnl roster player back bc of their cap situation, and the fact they have Rossi and Boldy already.

By no means am I saying we should trade Gibson. Just presenting a realistic scenario to getting Fiala.

Is there anyone here who follows the OHL closely? I've noticed looking at stats (while following McT stats) that Shane Wright pretty much went quiet in the playoffs. Also seeing that he's not that high in OHL stat. What's the reason he's considered the unanimous number 1 pick?

Ignore this question. I see now that in his age group he completely dominated over the rest of the field.

I think the top 5 picks will be Wright, Cooley, Savoie, Nemec and Slafkovsky (not in that order except for Wright being 1st). After that, who knows. The next level of talent IMO is Lambert, Kemell, Jiricek, Howard and Lekkerimaki. Outside the top 10 but not of the board would be Korchinski, Geekie and Gauthier. So a possibility of 8 players for GMPV to be looking at and I really don't think there are any "hidden gems" later in the first round to go off the board for.

    My list:

    1. Lambert

    2. Korchinski

    3. Howard

I think if you look at Fiala as a Rakell replacement, only 3 years younger and more productive over the last three seasons, it makes the focus a lot more clearer.

He would be an upgrade over Rakell from a compete level perspective. I have always felt that Rakells great puck handling focus of his game never really translated well in playoff hockey (evidenced by his poor game 7 performance against the Rangers last week). Fiala hustles hard and is really relentless in his forechecking game. I admit he had a bad series against the Blues as well, but i see more upside with his style if playing with Z or McT .
