I think it's 99.9% likely that Warren doesn't see NHL ice before Gudas' contract expires, so even if Warren and Luneau both end up being decent NHL-caliber defensemen down the road, we'll still need to add another guy on the right side for the short and long term.

I think Pesce on a 6-year deal would be just ideal. He can play four seasons (until age 33) as a top-4 guy and then the final two seasons he can just be a 4/5 Gudas-type until age 35. He's a good skater, good puck mover, has size and snarl, and comes from a winning culture. He thrives as more of a SAH guy too, so he's the guy I like the most. Minty-Pesce for the next 3-4 seasons would be outstanding.

From a cap perspective, the Ducks are also in a great position to add a big-time free agent this summer. They're only paying $16.9M for their current 7 D-men, which is pittance compared to most NHL teams. Even if they swapped Vaks for an $8M guy (not that they would), they'd still be paying less than most NHL teams do. And Mityukov and Zellweger's ELCs expire at the same time as the contracts for Fowler and Gudas, so the timing is perfect for when they're due raises. Luneau's and Warren's contracts will both slide this season so they'll be due for an extension a year later, and the cap should be in the mid-$90Ms by then. And its also very conceivable that Verbeek would bridge Minty and OZ too.

4 years 7 million a year for Stamkos is an inevitability I’m afraid

FWIW, Seravalli predicted Henrique <--> Kakko + 2nd on his TDL match-making show today.

I know Seravalli is not popular with Ducks fans for a variety of reasons, and he's been proven to have access to very little inside info from the Ducks front office (which makes his comment about what Verbeek is looking for pretty dubious), but he's been pretty good in the past on Rangers news (I believe he was the first to break the news that Tarasenko was waiving his NTC to go to the Rangers last season). This may just be purely his speculation, but I tend to think that he may have some inside info from the Rangers that they are interested in Rico and that Kakko is available.

Here also is a link to the accompanying article: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/playing-hockeys-doctor-love-2024-trade-deadline-matchmaker

I’ll gladly take that. I was thinking

Kakko and a 1st for Rico and Vatrano, so if that’s the deal I’m very happy.

The problem with Seravalli is he’s treated as an insider when he’s not and he’s a speculator with a platform.

I don't know. Kinda seems almost every Ducks broadcast Hazy or Ahlers are mentioning Cronin wanting more scoring from the backend. Fowler has half his point total from last season. Gudas isn't the guy you would expect to be leading the D in goals. I guess I had higher expectations for Minty being a points producer this season. This team needs scoring from everywhere though. With Gauthier, we're just hoping he produces at the NHL level. Mr Hobey Baker winner (Fantilli) had 65 points in his freshman year and is at 27 points this season with Columbus. Gauthier is a 20yo and has 38 points at BC. Still fewer points than Will Smith and Gabe Perreault.

This isn’t really the final version of the blue line, which is what the deal was considering imo.
    Luneau

    Zellweger

    Minttukov

    Lacombe

    Warren

    Hinds

    Moore

    Helleson

and then there’s some others. While all won’t pan out, you look at the forward group

    Sidorov

    Gaucher

    Colangelo

    Perrault

    Tracey

    Myatovic

I think you look at the upside of the two groups, the ducks needed a Gauthier and have enough chips to make a bet on trading Drysdale. Whether it works out I don’t know, but I feel confident in the bet

It’s also not ironic that the Zegras speculation started after drysdale got traded. “If they trade Zegras’ buddy, then he could get traded also!” seems to be the initial basis. Now it’s the contract issue from four months ago.

of all these reasons we’ve discussed for why Zegras could get traded in the future, these are the weakest.

They also ignore why Verbeek traded for Gauthier to begin with. Ducks need guys who can score. They traded a position of strength for a position of weakness. It doesn’t make sense to trade Zegras unless you’re getting something that’s the same or something you view as better, which I feel in almost every case, makes the team worse at what you’re trying to do

I like Kakko too, but I don't think he gets traded for a rental like Henrique. Maybe it’s possible if it’s for Vatrano since Frankie has another year left after this one.

Maybe, New York needs 2 centers I think. Henrique can play anywhere in their line up. If they trade Kakko for Henrique it lets them use their first for someone like Monohan or another piece. I wouldn’t be opposed to sending Rico and Frankie in the same deal, but o think Frankie should be expensive. Cheap deal with term for that type of player shouldn’t be cheap.

  6. So I dived into and read scouting reports from his draft year and looked at his numbers. Kaapo Kakko is interesting. He’s not very fast, but strong on his skates and with the puck. He’s gotten looks with the top line in New York, but I wonder if someone like McTavish could be a good center for him. I’m interested. I think he’s still a functional NHL player too, so you’re betting on if you can unlock that upside.

If his peers dislike him so much (other than Ducks players) then why would they want him on their teams?

Ah, true enough. I don’t know I just feel weird. Zegras was never overrated by anyone. He’s just marketable so people get bad about it. Which is stupid

I guess he's a Duck for life then. Why on Earth would these "journalists" speculate on him being traded? If potential future teammates view him as this bad, a cancer and a talentless oaf, then nobody would want to play with him. No GM would want to trade for him.

    What?

Corey Pronman's draft prospect midseason ranking out today at the Athletic.

    1. Celebrini

    2. Silayev

    3. Yakemchuk

    4. Lindstrom

    5. Levshunov

I'm not as prospect savvy as a lot of you here, but is it safe to say the guy he has at #3 is a bit of a surprise?

I listened to EP’s prospect ranking podcast they put out and they were kind of low on Yakemchuck

  10. “Much was made last year about Carlsson's skating as a shortfall in his game. Some of that dialogue was warranted, though perhaps a bit overblown. In the Elite Prospects 2023 NHL Draft Guide, we ended up projecting Carlsson's skating as NHL average, the lowest of all his physical tools.

If the first half of the season is any indication, that won't be a problem for Carlsson. In fact, the opposite may be true. The Swedish forward already looks capable of playing at an NHL pace. He's gotten quicker, generating more power through his crossovers, and it's given him the edge in many loose puck races. It also helps that he's a master of building speed below the puck, often giving him an advantage ahead of each touch in transition”

“The intelligence has stood out most of all though. Carlsson is already adept at getting open in transition, always making himself available as a passing option down the middle to his wingers on breakouts. He builds speed below the puck, then gets to attack with an advantage once he's secured possession in space. He's already got a good delay game off the rush but also thrives at driving the net as F2, often winning the body positioning against seasoned NHL defencemen.”

“Carlsson's projection has always been that of a well-rounded forward who does most of his work in the offensive end but also contributes defensively, which he has done to a sufficient extend in his rookie season. Carlsson's defensive underlying metrics are more than passable given his age and situation.

In the neutral zone, Carlsson is already one of the Ducks' better defensive forwards. He's created multiple high-value counter-attacks by pick-pocketing the puck-carrier or reading his passing intentions. He recognizes his assignments quickly and sticks to them, showing strong awareness and scanning habits in the process. “

    Ugh. Paywall.

    Is EP Rinkside worth it?

Depends. I spend a lot of time around draft time reading their articles/reports and they put out a massive draft guide every year that I reference a lot. So I find it worth it, if you’re not really about that, then probably not, but the Ducks are in a spot where they do get some decent coverage because of their highly touted prospect pool.

  12. Ross Johnston anyone? lol

I don’t know how I feel about Kaliyev. I feel like he might into a similar issue he did in LA, where he’s kind of stuck in the middle to bottom six.

    Gauthier - Carlsson - Terry

    Zegras - McTavish - Killorn

    Lundestrom - Strome - Kaliyev?

He’s never quite produced, but he’d certainly be an upgrade on what we have. I’m definitely interested

The one thing people keep saying on here that I dont agree with is how the Ducks got screwed on the Dadonov trade. To me that trade showed more of Verbeek's stupidity for not doi g his due diligence to find out that the Ducks were on Dadonov's no trade list. I dont know how the Ducks were screwed out of a guy that had them on his no trade and if he did come here he was never going to stay after the season. To me that was a break that the league stepped in to void a trade for a guy that didnt want to play with the Ducks. Not like Verbeek went out to get him when it was a Vegas cap dump.

It’s because 1. We would have received a 2nd round pick (?) with Dadanov. 2. He would have been moved at the next deadline and gathered even more assets for the ducks. the Senator’s incompetence cost teams several millions on dollars and cost Anaheim valuable assets to aid their rebuild. Verbeek acquire a guy thinking he could and was doing what every rebuilding gm should do. I don’t know how we pin this on Pat
