He's playing in a no nothing league though. The best player in the world is only only 6' 1".
You’re not drafting the best player in the world at like 26 my man. Just an insane way to think about a late first rounder. We harped on Verbeek for taking high floor, low ceiling guys. I’m not a “size is everything” type guy, but you see 6’7 with good skills, soft hands and good skating and you should look a little harder. Anyone you’re taking late in the first is a project.
-
This board is infuriating to talk to about hockey sometimes lol. Has to be one of the few places you can point at a 6’7 forward with damn good skills as a prospect and people don’t get even remotely interested
-
I’ve been looking into options with the second first
Dean Letourneau stands out
6’7” 210lbs Center
slick hands, gets to the front of the net, decent skater. He’s ranked generally 20-40 range. Probably a project, but man Tage Thompson 2.0 vibes

Ducks have been extremely good with defensemen, even guys who went on to other teams that we all know too well. They've been phenomenal with goaltending. Our forward picks have been been generally terrible with the exceptions of Rakell, Terry, Karlsson (who became good when he went to Vegas). My issue has been the Tracey's, Perreault's, Gaucher's, Steel's, Jones, Ritchie, Holland, Etem, Comtois, Morand et al. IMO, that's why the Ducks crashed and burned so hard after Getzlaf, Perry, Kesler. They lacked legit forwards and we only started getting better ones because we have been drafting in the top-10 and traded for Gauthier. You're then banking on all your top picks to be studs or impact players because your subsequent picks don't give you much room for error.
Hasn't our biggest problem been that we can not generate puck possession, shots and goals?
I do wonder if we could do hit rates for mid to late first round picks for every team, I do wonder if it’s a Ducks problem

Meh, I'm not really sold on him. He's either going to be good or he's going to be the next Brett Leason. BTW, Leason had 89 points in his draft year but still ended up being picked in the 2nd round. Size isn't the end all to be all and I've seen quite a few videos of Lindstrom lacking in hockey IQ.
That’s why you take a look at how they’re producing. It’s the combination of size and skills and what he does with it. I’m not sold on him over Demidov personally, but the raw tools are super enticing

They do, but it doesn't mean jack s*** if they can't develop guys (especially forwards) which recent history hasn't been kind to them.
You can say that about every prospect ever. Mintyukov and Zellweger have been great. Zegras has been great. McTavish has been solid. Carlsson has been as advertised? Dostal has been coming into his own. I don’t think the Ducks have been that bad at developing players

Not bad. It’s also a move that is much harder to transition to the NHL against NHL defenders. Hes got the raw tools that Verbeek seems to focus on. I still think Verbeek is targeting Leshunov and it gets interesting if he values the next best RHD over a forward like Lindstrom
I think the Ducks in general love their raw, toolsy, physically developing guys. Lindstrom has the Ducks written all over them

It depends on how much of a hometown discount he'll take. He's still very much productive and losing him will make the Lightning worse. Also keep in mind, Tampa always finds a way to skirt the cap.
Maybe in season, but they’ve pretty consistently lost meaningful players to FA since their cups. We’re paying one right now. 2 years 7 million for Stamkos or something like that, wouldn’t be awful. I am wary of continuing to add aging assets, but he scores goals

Nah. I'm pretty sure Stamkos wants to retire a Lightning. I think the only disqualifier with Stamkos is that he's not useless. Verbeek loves useless players.
Kind of feels like he would have resigned already if it were that simple. I’m sure Stamkos wants to return, but it doesn’t sound mutual. So I do really think there’s a decent chance Stamkos is a Duck next year

I’m not really sure what to make of Zetterlund, he has 29 career goals and 29 of them are this year. This being his first full season and he’s kind of the guy on that team right now. Age is decent, and if he settles into a 10-15 goal 30-40 point middle six guy, wouldn’t hate it, I think the proposed trade is rich for my blood, but he’s not a player I would hate adding.

This was his best play of the game. Should be a fun one tomorrow in the finals vs Celebrini and Boston. For those wondering, even if BC loses they’ll still be going to the NCAA tournament.
Any word on Colangelo? I know his team was eliminated but they can still be invited to the tournament

I'm looking at Jiricek and Marchenko. Nothing less than that.
Celebrini (if we picked him it would be the end of Zegras in Anaheim)
Parekh (I don't know why he's playing second fiddle to Levshunov)
Iginla (Also being overlooked but would be a perfect fit for what Verbeek is building)
Who I don't want:
Lindstrom (long term project and Anaheim's development system sucks)
Silayev (I don't think he fits with what Verbeek says he's building)
Yachemchuk (the next Klingberg)
Iginla is good, but I don’t think he’s a top 5 pick. Parekh just has serious question marks if his game is translatable
I don’t think Lindstrom is anymore of a project than any other prospect not named Celebrini
im not that high on Silayev either
im not familiar at all Yachemchuk
If you get #1 you take Celebrini and figure it out. I don’t think it means anything for anyone outright

Celebrini
Demidov
Lindstrom
Levshunov
Are my picks in order

If Verbeek is paying 3rd line players between $5-$6.25M I would hate to see how much he would pay Martinook. He's already paying McGinn $2.75M.
McGinn was a camp dump in a trade. I don’t really think that’s an accurate reflection of his value. If you want to improve your bottom six Martinook does that. Probably wouldn’t pay more than what he’s making now maybe around 2 million.

I’m sure people are going to roll their eyes at this and I don’t know if Carolina lets him go as he wears an A, but Jordan Martinook could be an interesting 4th line option. He’s been very good in Carolina, he plays in a similar system already, veteran, produced well for a depth guy. I think he’s a good target if he ends up being available.

All the more reason Brett Pesce should be Verbeek’s primary target in UFA this summer.
Necas via trade and Martinook in FA are interesting too

To me, it looks like they try to play this way, but they don't do two things they need to, that CAR does in these clips:
1. get to the puck carrier instantly and pressure.
2. read and react instantly to where the play/puck is going
They are slow, more so in their processing and reactions than foot speed. It's something I've noticed on offense and on the PP: they are slow - in their thinking and anticipating. They don't make those rapid plays and passes, hold onto pucks just a tick too long.
I agree and it’s especially an issue with sorting out their assignments. Guys are way too late to make pass offs or when there’s picks set.
i mainly wanted to post it to show that it’s not a system issue in the sense that the goal is untenable, but it’s an execution issue. And as Fisix said, when the team was healthy in the first month or so of the season, they weren’t too far off. To me it’s concerning that they’ve gotten way worse at the system the longer they’ve done it

thought I’d share this, this is an example of how Cronin wants this team to play. Lot of moving parts.

Columbus has no need to trade him. He doesn't hurt them cap wise. They probably want to see him totally healthy playing with Fantili and Guadreau.
Columbus has surprisingly little cap space for a basement dweller. I don’t know what they want to do, nor do I care, I just think that Laine meets the criteria Verbeek wants and I don’t think it’s impossible to make happen

They will want something substantial going back.... like Zegras. It's not going to be a 2nd + random prospect <-----> Laine.
Use then second first we have. I don’t think it’ll take all that much especially given that we don’t have to ask them the retain salary.

we’ve moved past the drama a bit, but I found this interesting. Something most certainly happened behind the scenes.

Trade for Laine
Sign Matt Roy
Draft Ivan Demidov
fix bottom six
profit
Zegras - Carlsson - Laine
Gauthier - McTavish - Terry
Mintyukov - Gudas
Fowler - Roy
Zellweger - (player)
I don’t know if that’s a cup winning team, but a lot of promise there

NHL Entry Draft Targets

I can dig Emil Hemming. I’m not an NhL scout so I don’t know all the factors about about prep school leagues, but I do know the Ducks have picked from those leagues before. I believe Ian Moore, Kyle Kukkonnen were selected from school. Letourneau is a BC commit, BC is a very strong program obviously. That gives me some sign that he he’s turned some heads in places that are worth listening to. He averaged over 2 points per game, he’s 6’7. Worth paying attention to is all I’m saying. I’m not remotely interested in Emery personally
