  1. IIRC, the McDonald trade was a cap causality due to Niedermayer and Selanne deciding to come back mid season. It’s been too long so I don’t remember what other potential options Burke might have had. Either way, both Burke and Selanne/Niedermayer screwed the Ducks there. I never really blamed those two players too much for it. It is what is. Burke…eh. I get that with losing Selanne/Niedermayer potentially forever he felt the need to go out and sign Bertuzzi and Schneider to replace them, but damn did that ever screw things up. Burke’s honestly pretty overrated. He got lucky that Pronger mostly fell into his lap because at the time the Ducks were one of the few contending teams that could afford his cap hit. Niedermayer came here to play for his brother, he caught lightning in a bottle with Selanne (and bringing the franchise’s most beloved player back on a year tryout isn’t some great strategy move), and everything else was mostly in place. Burke’s best move was trading for Beauchemin and Marchant, and he gave all the credit to McNabb for that one saying it was McNabb that scouted Beauchemin and told Burke to acquire him if he could.
  2. I’d rather have Pastrnak at that money anyway. He’s 3 years younger than Huberdeau and has a great playoff track record. I don’t know the Bruins cap situation, but it’s hard to see them not finding a way to keep him. Also hard to imagine him choosing the Ducks over the Bruins if the money is the same. I mean, I don’t see good things on the horizon for them because their prospect system isn’t good and their team is full of aging players. The Ducks are currently the better bet to be the better team in the coming years. I just imagine it would be hard for him to leave Boston for us.
  3. This could be a great move if his defense is still trash. Maybe we’ll lose a bunch of entertaining 4-3, 5-4 type games, but he’ll put up points and be traded at some point in the season for a 1st rounder. That’s my ideal anyway. I look at this as buying assets so it’s a good move. Hopefully if him, Vatrano, and Strome are too good and help bring the Ducks to mediocrity, then some of the young guys will really take the next step (especially McTavish).
  4. I’d argue he would hurt the team long term just from hurting our draft position next year. Even if we’re talking 3 spots (say 7 instead of 10), not only is that hurting lottery odds, but even if you traded him the following season and got a late 1st rounder (who knows if he would even be playing well enough for that return) that might not be equal value when you factor in the cost to move up from 10 to 7 in the draft.
  5. Exactly, so it’s best to wait and see how the young players develop this coming season before potentially throwing away draft capital and prospects at players. I was fine with Bjorkstrand because he basically cost nothing, but Fiala cost a decent 1st round pick and a decent prospect. Debricant cost a good 1st round pick, and he’s not even signed long term.
  6. It’s a significant part of the core that will determine whether or not the Ducks are contenders in the future. You can add in Mintyukov and Zellweger to that, but they are further away and thus have more questions. The fact is, Anaheim is probably completely screwed if those 4 players aren’t the real deal. They could probably afford for Terry to regress a little as long as the other 3 pick up the slack, or if someone else in the system surprises a bit. The Ducks could have gotten Fiala or Debrincat, and it wouldn’t make a difference if those 4 players and some of the other prospects don’t end up meeting/exceeding their projections.
  7. I can’t agree on Niederreiter because he’s not a guy who will help the team win when their ready to win, and he likely wouldn’t have been traded at the deadline for assets because he would have been signed for 2 years. All I see him doing is adding a couple wins to the team, and for what? All that does is make us slide down the lottery odds for 2023. I get that we can’t completely suck next year, and we needed to make signings for the cap floor. Strome and Vatrano accomplish that. Adding any more just brings us to mediocrity, which is a horrible spot to be in when in a rebuild. So I would hope we acquire good young players for cheap (Bjorkstrand) or take on bad contracts for assets. Both of those help the Ducks in the future, which is the most important thing. Niederreiter does not.
  8. Hopefully all the young players. This team will likely live or die by how good Zegras, McTavish, Drysdale, and Terry will be. The other players in our highly valued system are young and inexperienced. We’ll find out next year whether the Ducks more realistically need another development year before it makes sense to go out and acquire guys who we hope will still be good for a few years. Imagine if McTavish struggles, Drysdale doesn’t show much improvement, Terry only pots 20 goals, and maybe Zegras gets to that 70-80 point mark. If it turns out they need more time then you won’t want to have acquired a bunch of guys in their 30s this offseason. That’s 1 less year of value you get out of them when your team is good.
  9. I only have one big fault for Verbeek so far this summer, and that is him nearly signing a 30 year old Niederreiter for 4 million a year on a 2 year contract. Then the very next day, a better player who is 27 and signed for 4 years at 5 per (Bjorkstrand) was had for a 3rd and 4th round pick. We have 3 2nd round picks next year, so we could have easily parted with one of them to beat that offer. I’m more miffed that Verbeek wanted Niederreiter on a 2 year deal since that makes no sense at all for this team, but the Bjorkstrand deal happening so close to the Niederreiter deal falling apart (thankfully) was a 1-2 punch. Bleh.
  10. My first thought is Florida got absolutely fleeced…however… Both Huberdeau and MacKenzie are UFA next year, and I have to believe Florida felt they weren’t going to be able to sign them. So turning two expiring contracts, a C+/B- prospect (Schwindt), and a 1st into Tkachuk isn’t completely horrible. It’s a lot though. Huberdeau gets you a 1st at the deadline and probably a B to B+ prospect, or possibly a 1st and 2 second rounders. MacKenzie gets you another 1st and some add on’s if he’s playing the way he did last year. So technically Florida gave up three 1st rounders (2 of which are guaranteed to be late round as TDL teams would be playoff teams), add on’s (likely a mix of a B grade prospect and 2nd round picks), and a slightly lesser prospect. Yeah, that’s a lot. But if your Florida at least you got an elite young player signed for 8 years. Where Florida is at with their roster that will help them stay competitive. I can’t say I absolutely hate it from their perspective because it’s doubtful Calgary will find another Tkachuk with the 1st/prospect they got back. Same if they were to trade both MacKenzie and Huberdeau for picks/prospects. From Calgary’s perspective, the only negative is - assuming they sign both to extensions - they’ll be paying for Huberdeau’s 30s, and MacKenzie is only a year younger. It’s still a tough loss to lose Tkachuk, but they did well for being held over a barrel. This keeps them competitive. If Florida wasn’t in the position they seemed to be in, Calgary likely would have just had to accept a couple 1st’s and a decent prospect anyway. Or a decent roster player and a 1st. Some combination of that. In some ways they both were fortunate to take advantage of each other’s situations. I do like it more for Calgary, but the more I think about it from Florida’s perspective, the more I’m distanced from my first reaction which was, “Wow that’s a robbery!”
  11. Well with spending time pursuing an age 30 Niederreiter for a 2 year contract Verbeek’s strategy was neither improving the team for the future, or taking advantage of cap space for assets. That’s concerning if that’s where his headspace is. I didn’t like it yesterday, and it looks significantly worse today with the Bjorkstrand deal being available.
  12. The Bjorkstrand deal for the Kraken is exactly the kind of move Verbeek should have been all over. Not Niederreiter. Bjorkstrand is going into his age 27 season, signed for 4 more years at a decent number, and he’s a legit top 6 winger. And it only cost a 3rd and 4th rounder. That’s a fantastic move.
  13. The worst thing you can be as a rebuilding team is mediocre, so signing guys that bring you up to that point doesn’t make any sense. Those same guys will be around when your team is ready to contend. Ideally Verbeek would take on a bad contract for assets to fill a spot, but that avenue might not be as open anymore. Maybe a contender hoping for Kadri could fill that roll.
  14. It would have been strange for Niederreiter to choose the Ducks over Nashville. They made the playoffs last year, and picked up McDonagh so they should have a good chance to make it again. A lot better chances than the Ducks anyway. It’s not like he was taking a 1 year contract to hopefully play with Zegras/Strome and get #1 PP minutes to inflate his value for free agency again. Or maybe he was until Nashville came in. For the Ducks, I’m glad we missed out on him. If it was a 1 year deal I could stomach that because maybe you sell him off at the deadline for a 1st rounder if Zegras/Strome inflate his point totals. More likely it would be a 2nd. But a 2 year deal means he probably wouldn’t have been dealt at the deadline, and it also means he’s not part of the future. So what’s the point? All he would do is make the Ducks slightly better this year, and still not a playoff team. All that does is give us a worse 1st rounder in next years draft, and even if you do trade him at the deadline you’re probably not getting the value back that he took from your 1st rounder becoming worse. He’d have to a really solid season for that to work out, and that seems like an unnecessary risk.
  15. Verbeek should have been blasted into the sun if he did that. Can step back from the ledge.
  16. It’s not something to be taken too seriously.
  17. Lmao, this isn’t good. A montage of Strome missing wide open nets. Now I can see why so many people are saying this on Twitter. The last one is amazing; a picture of Strome with a wide open net captioned, “Ryan Strome passed this puck.”
  18. That would be nice. I just saw that Ryan Strome is brutal on faceoffs, and some advanced stats charts floating around don’t love his defense either. That’s not great.
  19. I could see Dylan not wanting to come since he probably wants to play C in the top 6 to keep building his value like he did this season.
  20. This is acceptable. If possible, get his brother and stay far away from Palat.
  21. It’s a pointless signing. The best argument is, “we have the money” and “he’s good for the culture.” That’s a waste IMO. At least acquire players still in their 20s who could still be good in a few years, or take on bad contracts for assets so at least we get another top 10 or better pick plus more assets to help with the rebuild. Palat doesn’t help with any of that, and those two things are more important than “winning culture.”
  22. I wonder what Kadri is going to get per year if we think Ryan Strome is over 5 million and Dylan is over 4? He’s 32 in October so he can’t get a long deal unless some team is absolutely stupid. 5 years 7-8m per? Obviously I don’t want the Ducks to do that, but just thinking. If I was a contending team I’d much rather have Kadri for a few million more than either Strome brother, but term would be an issue.
  23. I understand this. I’m saying if Verbeek is willing to sign Palat for what we think it might take, he should have chosen Burakovsky instead (assuming he wanted to play here but he chose Seattle so not out of the realm of possibility.
  24. He’s 31 and he’s played nearly a full season of playoff hockey in the last 3 years. If you were going to sign someone in that range at least go with Burakovsky since he’s only 27 and could still be decent when the Ducks are ready to compete.
