Then he definitely should be let go before puck drop tonight.  Because he is failing at that.

Zegras' FO % is bad.  He defensive coverage equally lacking.  Comtois and Lundestrom and Jones?  Ugh.

Terry is putting up points.  But even he is tied - with 8 other guys - for 28th overall in scoring.  Zegras? Tied with 7 other guys for 69th. So, even those guys are not lighting it up.  Good seasons so far, but far from great, or "improving".

    Gibson?  Woof.

    Fowler? Yikes.

    Klingberg? Oh, boy.

The team is porous defensively (31st in GAPG) and impotent offensively (29th in GPG).

The team has one plus player on the roster, at +1.  The Shatt. Wow.

Henrique is even, and Carrick, at three games, is even.  The other 21 guys who have skated this season?  All minuses.

The problem is there are no positives this season. Like trade deadline ok. Prospects ok. But what is the team as a whole doing? Nothing really. Guys are frustrated. No offense. No defense. No goaltending. No systems. Nothing.

probably 'cause he set the record straight last off-season that he never requested a trade and his comments about winning weren't meant to imply that.

But honestly I wouldn't blame ANY player for wanting out at this point. And if those talks come up I can't see how Verbeek wouldn't immediately can the coach. I think that's got to be the requirement at this point right? Like if players become disgruntled to the point they want to leave you have no choice but to get rid of Eakins right?

  3. Well can't say that I'm surprised. But idk what are they going to change? I mean they could try harder but to me the weakest link is still the coach. I heard Trotz wants to come back and coach but that top pick is just so tempting!!!

Hughes should be the comparable contract for Zegras. I'm not sure about Terry, I think he would want a max deal. But idk if you would pay him more than Zegras. Sure he's got better numbers now but I think Z should be the highest paid player on the team. He's already essentially the face of the team, if not the league (to a certain point). Maybe Z gets 8x9 and Terry 8x8.5. Although, idk if you could justify Z being paid that much more when I'm not sure he's better than Hughes at this point.

Hah never mind I just looked at current projections and did you know Terry is currently on pace for about 97 points?! If he gets close to 100 no way does he make less than 8x9. Zegras is on pace for about 35 goals and 77 points. In Hughes 3rd year (this is technically Z's 3rd year) he had 56 points in 49 games. Unless Zegras starts to pick it up I'm not sure he's going to make more than Hughes, if at all. He's definitely capable of more production. My guess is around February Verbeek will have a pretty good indication of what both Terry and Zegras will be asking for and possibly contract negotiations might begin to take off.

That McTavish kid is pretty good too. He's on pace for about 40 points! Considering his TOI and how Eakins has been utilizing him I'd say he's done pretty good for himself. Also, as the season rolls along he's probably only going to get more comfortable. Our future payroll is going to be quite expensive. Now if only we could find ourselves a Hedman, Makar or Fox.... come on Zellweger!!!

I think he gets a 3-year bridge somewhere south of the 3 x $4M that Noah Dobson got. Maybe a 3 x $3.5M, but with a progressive salary that guarantees him $5M+ as his QO when he's 24.

    Yeah I'd say that's pretty realistic. 3x4 or 4x4.5.

Just as Devil's advocate, here are the top three picks of the 2012 draft - including a highly-regarded Russian - and what the take on them was immediately following the draft.

We all know what happened on the way to The (Montreal) Forum...

    3. Alex Galchenyuk (MTL)

    8 OF 10

There were only two forwards selected in the first 10 picks of the draft. Alex Galchenyuk was the second as he was selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the third overall pick.

Galchenyuk is a good friend of the top pick in this year's draft, as they were teammates in the Ontario Hockey League, but Galchenyuk didn't have much of a 2012 season.

Alex suffered a knee injury early and was only able to return for the final two games of the regular season and four games in the opening round of the playoffs.

However, in 2011, Galchenyuk had 83 points in 68 games with 52 penalty minutes. The guy is a scrappy player with a great skill set. He may be the superstar the Canadiens have been waiting for.

    2. Ryan Murray (CBJ)

    9 OF 10

Ryan Murray has been compared to Scott Niedermayer. Anyone who has watched hockey in the last 20 years knows what that means. That's a tall order for Murray, but he has the tools to fill that role well.

Murray was selected No. 2 overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Jackets drafted well with this pick. One of the most complete players in the draft, the 6' defenseman has some bulk to his frame (201 lbs.) but also has a dominant skill set and a proven record against some of the top competition in the world.

If Murray can live up to his potential the Jackets may have found their Erik Karlsson, someone they can build their defense around.

Murray had 31 points in an injury-shortened 2012 campaign. The 19-year-old will be a welcomed addition to the Columbus area.

    1. Nail Yakupov (EDM)

    10 OF 10

The Edmonton Oilers didn't want to tip their hand to letting anyone else know about who they would pick with the first selection. While it could be debated who to take No. 1, few were probably surprised when the Oilers selected Russian winger Nail Yakupov to start the 2012 entry draft.

Yakupov, like many of the other top 10 picks, had an injury-shortened 2012 season but still managed to turn heads with his production. The right winger scored 69 points in 42 games, quite the clip.

He helped Russia win the silver medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships. The Russian had nine assists in the tournament, including a four-assist game against Canada in the semifinals.

Scouting report says he's Pavel Bure-like. Pavel Bure, you know, the Russian Rocket?

That's pretty strong company to be compared to. We'll see if he can follow in the footsteps of other recent Oiler draft picks like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Maybe we should be wary of guys who "compare to Scott Neidermayer "... yes that includes Cam. Somehow they just never get to that level lol

Here's my take on this team:

They are awful on the PP and defense.  Do you know what makes a good PP and a good defense?

Hard work.  Effort. Will over skill.  You have to have talent, but good PP's outwork their opponents, and a good defensive team has to WORK hard to be effective.

So that goes to the PK, which also lives by the old adage that your best penalty killer is your goaltender. And they have not got enough from them, either.

As much as we talk about how they need talent, the work effort seems to be lacking.  Effort is a physical battle AND a mental battle.  Connecting on passes, when to make the safe play/when to take a chance, consistently being in the right place in your own end and the attacking zone, attention to detail, knowing your role.

I think it's getting better though. Defense also needs to work with the tenders to be effective. They just need to clear the front of the net more effectively and prevent cross ice passes. Get to rebounds better. We've also had quite a bit of turnover on defense. Lindholm and Manson have been two staples on D for so long that I bet Gibson is missing them. But Kulikov has gotten better and can we also give Beniot some love for the beautiful hip check. We're starting to resemble some kind of systems play. I think the goaltenders average save percentage also goes up. Baring a major injury until the deadline I can see us getting better.

Or like the 5 for fighting rule where you can’t rejoin till after play stops.

I’m actually shocked it’s not the same for a match penalty.

Upon further pondering I think it doesn't make sense to do that because it would mean that a team is short handed for longer which would also be unfair. But having a player leave the box and skate to the bench would be a decent idea but probably complicates the game further. What about a goal scored where the change happened to be that fine line for too many men on the ice? Would teams also be able to challenge that? I mean it's a decent idea but probably complicates the game and we don't want anymore of that!

  10. Did anyone watch that highlight of Milano coming out of the penalty box and scoring that beauty? He definitely still has nice hands. Vasy didn't have a particularly good game but still he did that to one of the best in the world.

I'll tell ya who GMPV should be looking to move - AS LONG AS HE HAS A PLAN FOR A REPLACEMENT STARTING NEXT SEASON.

    Cam Fowler.

It'd be good for Cam to go to a winner, he could add a lot to a team that has it's proverbial Dehydrated Donkey Dung together, and he would probably bring back a good asset or two.  GMPV might have to take on a bad contract in the short term, but Fowler has three more years left, so as long as it was less than $6.5 mil and less than 3 years it would be a "win".

The replacement could be Zellweger, or Drysdale, or Mintyukov, or a UFA or a guy they trade for, doesn't really matter, as long as he has a player to fit in Cam's slot.

I don't think we move Fowler anytime soon. At the 2025 trade deadline would probably be the first real chance to move him as he'd have 1 year remaining on his contract. Fowler is currently the ducks only real D signed past next year. Vakanainen and white are the other two so meh. He probably leads the transition but I also along with Fowler expect the team to be overall better once we get a real coach.

I agree with others that there's no point in picking up guys like Reilly at the moment. We're just too bad for it to make any real difference. If we want to really make a change it would be to get rid of Eakins and we don't seem to want to do that. That alone would probably be a really big boost for this club and way way better than picking up guys off the waiver wire. It's upsetting that we're barely into the season and it's already lost though. Still hoping for Bedard.

By any logic, Cam Fowler sucks this season. On a team that desperately needs his leadership and production, they are getting what from him?  Certainly not what he's paid for.

That's fair. I just think the biggest issue has been coaching more than anything. With better coaches I think we would see much much better results from this group. I don't see much changing performance wise until Eakins leaves unfortunately. So saying all the players suck isn't really saying much.

No reason to argue with someone who is a die heart fan of any given player. Just want to remind you, it's a RESULTS oriented business, and no matter how much affection you have for some player(s), if results are not there, CHANGES are needed.

As far as second part of your statement: Kulikov is our best defenseman as of now, but he'll be traded in February.

I'm not against criticizing players. I've never said Cam was a number 1 defenseman in this league. But here in Anaheim he sure has been played like one. I've mentioned it before, your D partners are important and he hasn't played with very many good ones over the years. He's dragged dead weight around for us and I'd say somewhat successfully.

Has he had his struggles, especially this year? Of course. I mentioned Shatty because although he's probably been the ducks worst defenseman he actually has the best +/- on this team and has some of the best point totals for D. Fowler actually had a pretty good year last year. I'm not sure what you expect of him and I think it's a fair criticism to say that he never became the player we thought he would. I think the team hurt his development and rushed him into the league which I think might be happening with Drysdale as well.

Right now I don't think it's fair to judge players because our coaching is really bad. This whole team should be better but instead every part of this team looks terrible. I wanted to take some time to give props to Terry though. Even though coaching has been really bad he's somehow managed to not get bogged down and having a great season. Imagine what he can do with better coaches.

Whatever you do, don't look at Cam Fowler.

1 A, 0 G in 13 games, -5, only making $500k less than Klingberg this season, and then $19.5 mil more over the next three seasons.  Just as soft as Klingberg, less offense.

Thssss.........Quiet, don't touch FOWLer, he is our legend. Otherwise, you'll be accused of being hockey ignorant Ducks fan.

So by this logic Shattenkirk is the ducks best defenseman.

No way.  When we win the Cup this year he'd probably drop it again.  That's all we need.  Besides, being traded to this team right after winning the Cup last season would probably be judged by the Supreme Court as cruel and unusual punishment, and thus unconstitutional.

Yeah besides he's probably bad luck and never going to be on a winning team because of Karma for dropping the cup. And we don't need anyone jinxing our chances at the cup right now....

  16. Is it also a coincidence that some of the players we have/had, like Fowler or Lindholm had some of their best years during the BB era? Do you guys think Getzy and the leadership regret the removal of BB and begin the decline in coaching? I mean RCs first year was pretty good but after that it goes down hill pretty fast.

  17. 3 hours ago, hoxxey said:

It's what real, good, NHL coaching does for a player.  He never had that in Anaheim. (well maybe BB)

Absolutely. If we had better coaching we wouldn't be at the bottom of the league. If you want to be in the lottery sweepstakes, Eakins is your guy. The other thing that bothers me is that guys who will be shipped out will get a lower return and we get rid of players who might actually be decent with the right coaching but instead we get rid of them because Eakins is a bad coach.

You guys think Lindholm deserves some early talk about a Norris nomination? Yes it's early, but we are 10 games in and he's 3rd among D in points (more than a pt per game) and tied for 2nd OA for +/- and averaging 24 min a night...on the PK, on the PP, even strength...scored a gwg in OT...and all of this to help the Bruins start 9-1-0 and with an injured blue line...

Yes, too early to tell...but it's a great start for him and just great to see him finally flourishing for the league to see

If he keeps this up I think he would get votes. Though that EK65 guy is pretty good to start the season as well.

I understand Lindholm is in a different situation and that he probably wouldn't be playing like that here but I think this just kind of shows our current coaches and systems aren't working. We scratched Mahura but he seems to be doing fine in Florida. 🤷‍♂️
